It is becoming more and more popular for teams to add void years onto players contracts in order to limit the cap hit right now and go "All-In".

"Void years are contract years on which the player will never play. They are placeholders for prorated signing bonus money, which can be assigned when the void years are created or created through a later . Since a bonus can be prorated over a maximum of five seasons, the highest number of void years that can be added to a contract is five minus the number of years left on the contract the player is currently on.

Once a player reaches the void years portion of their contract and they are not re-signed to a new contract for that team, all the bonus money prorated onto the void years is accelerated to that year for cap purposes." - Eric Eager

One of the more glaring contracts that is taking advantage of this is Jalen Hurts deal. He is set to have a void year cap hit of 97,000,000 in 2029.

Can someone explain what is going to happen in 2029 with the Eagles and Jalen Hurts? If they extend him and that 97M is added to the new deal we may be looking at a 110-120M cap hit from just him. And if he does not play then that would be the largest dead cap in NFL history by a mile.

Hey there Broncos Country,

Is there anyone else out there who is a frequent ATN listener? I've been on it since nearly the start back in 2013

The only podcast I religiously listen to whenever an episode comes out.

However, for years now I have found Gregg Rosenthals attitude to the Broncos to be frustratingly critical at every possible turn.

The latest relating to Bo Nix that he mentioned on the Pod + his Draft Recap article on is that

"Nix struggled when pressured in college and doesn't have an imposing skill set. He profiles as the type of player who usually gets taken in the third round, which is often where the sixth quarterback selected gets drafted. This year, the sixth quarterback was selected No. 12 overall."

This is bizarre considering Gregg frequently cites PFF who had this to say about Nix.

"While Nix didn’t fare very well in our stable metrics, he thrived in unstable metrics, such as grade under pressure. While it typically fluctuates year over year, Nix earned a career 75.6 grade under pressure in college. That mark ranks 16th out of 106 qualifying quarterbacks since 2019.

Not only does Nix play well under pressure, but he also avoids sacks at an elite level. In his last college season, Nix held a 1.2% sack rate, ranking second among all quarterbacks."

Dislike Nix and Payton (which he openly does) all you want - However, this comment along with many other head scratchers has made him a tough listen for some time. Anyway, keen to hear if I am in the minority.

EDIT: This is more a call out to any Broncos fans who listen to ATN who have noticed Gregg's attitude to them - More so than 'Is this true about Bo Nix', of which we know to be true and will only find out in the coming years :)

Ok I actually really like her. Maybe I’m crazy but I get so sick of the “my husband is in the NFL” stuff. No he isn’t. He had a great career but let’s be real. He is not very good and it’s over.

Going through some of the "expert" draft grades, everyone has something snarky to say about "dRaFtInG a PuNtEr iN tHe 4Th," even people giving Poles high marks. Is it homerism/cope to actually be a fan of this pick? I feel like the meatballs just see it as a reach and don't realize that the Bears had the worst punting in the league in '23, and that Taylor is actually good enough to be an All-Pro as a rookie (re-wrote the NCAA record book at his position, won the Ray Guy award, etc,). Plus what defensive talent was available on day 3 that is a gauranteed starter and difference-maker? Who did we miss out on who could improve the team right now?

Thought the Saints killed the draft this year. Got guys who can provide an immediate impact now, but also possibly with this franchise for years to come.

Thought the Fuaga pick was great and loved getting Kool-Aid in the second round was good. Allows them the opportunity to have a guy who was well regarded out of Alabama the opportunity to play right away and if Adebo or Lattimore leave will have a guy be the successor.

Thought they did well with that DT from UNI as I could see him slide in to a spot in a year or 2. Rattler has good upside and watched his game vs Georgia and was excited to see what he did. Even if he doesn’t become the teams starter, it was well worth it to draft him there than trade up for Haener.
