He's hacking the viscosity, idiot

[–]Russian_repost_bot 340 points341 points  (0 children)

Nah, it's just his character ability.

Runs fast in water

Considering some "abilities" are "randomly dies", it's possible.

    Black Flag: reasonable logic

Watch Dogs:"IM RUNNING AT SPEED OF LIIIGGHHT!!"

    [–]PancakeParty98 155 points156 points  (3 children)

It’s more than that though. They’re not just reducing speed they’re giving specialized gaits depending on the depth of water. Never seen that high footed run for shin high water in a game before. It’s pretty cool.

    [–]thatboiwithmeme 26 points27 points  (2 children)

    Its in gta 5 kinda

    [–]blacksteve929 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Yeah gta5 has different water gaits as well. Notice it when doing triathlons especially

This isn’t a fair comparison because one game takes place on the water and the other is pile of shit

      [–]blamb211 206 points207 points  (28 children)

I was gonna say, when 50%+ of a game is on/in water, makes sense they focus on those physics quite a bit.

      [–]BrundyJones 168 points169 points  (24 children)

Those wading animations are actually from 3 though. You weren't a pirate in 3 and the game barely took place on water as you were usually either in a city or in a forest. Nobody played the naval missions either. Please don't yell at me.

      [–]blamb211 84 points85 points  (6 children)

I did not know that. Got like two hours into 3, and just didn't give a shit after that. 100%d Black Flag, though, because it was fantastic, other than those stupid "hacking" puzzle spheres.

      [–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (5 children)

Nobody played the naval missions either.

Then they wouldn't have made a pirate game utilising all of the mechanics from the naval missions.

      [–]Lemon_slices 18 points19 points  (4 children)

Around the time of Black Flag release Ubisoft said Black Flag was being made for awhile and the naval missions in 3 were a testing ground of sorts for a lot of the mechanics they were using in 4. Also considering they released only a year apart, 4 would have been very far into it's development by time there was any critical reception of the naval missions.

      [–]Shajirr 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Does Black Flag connect with a previous game in terms of story, or its standalone?

      [–]Azrael11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you actually play as the grandfather of the protagonist from 3. It also has connections to Rogue, which came later.

      [–]ericd7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're all loosely connected. The main character for Black Flag is Edward Kenway, his son is Haytham Kenway who was the templar that you play as in the beginning of AC3 and father of the main character.

      [–]Azazel_brah 8 points9 points  (5 children)

3 was the best assassins creed. Cause it was the forerunner for the current system and was ironically the "founding father" of the way the following AC games were run

I will die on this hill

      [–]Lemon_slices 19 points20 points  (1 child)

If it's your personal favorite, there's nothing wrong with that, but just because the game set up systems that ended up being better in the future doesn't mean it's the best. Strange argument imo.

      [–]Azazel_brah -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Im one of those annoying fans who think that the series lost its charm after 3. I saw a sharp decline to the point where I won't buy an AC game again, after fanboying for years.

Also, the original creator of AC intended the series to be a trilogy, but Ubisoft fired him and milked his ideas for money - so I try not to support them after 3.

Black Flag is a cool pirates of the Caribbean game, i 100% the game, but its a bad assassins creed game (once again, annoying opinion i know). And the rest of the games after that I would compare to cod yearly releases, except every year is an off year.

I remember playing Assassins Creed Unity and thinking that this series is 100% aesthetic now, with a dead overarching story and stale gameplay. At least on release. It was a sad realization that my favorite series ever is a cash grab now.

AC: Origins, I relapsed and bought it cause I loved Egypt - but its the same feel as black flag imo. Its a fun hack n slash 3rd person game, but I didn't feel stealthly like the early AC games. They have a very different feel to them, I only like the combat better. Not to mention the loot boxes/microtransactions...

Thank you for reading my sad gamer rant on my ex-favorite series of all time lol.

      [–]mike_jones2813308004 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Idk, having a game centered around climbing stuff and then 90% is in a forest, field, or a village full of 2 story houses fell a bit flat for me. The story was top notch though.

      [–]DyslexicBrad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Black flag was the best AC game because it was sid meier's pirates remastered.

      [–]TacoTuesday555 0 points1 point  (1 child)

But 3 also had snow. Lots and lots of snow.

      [–]BrundyJones 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It wasn't the same animation set.

      [–]Lilcrash 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Nobody played the naval missions either.

Uhmmm. Isn't the popularity of naval missions in 3 the reason Black Flag exists?

      [–]BrundyJones -1 points0 points  (1 child)

how? it came out a year later lol. sure buddy.

      [–]CapitanM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree, but that's the difference between a good game and a great game: the details

      [–]soer774c 99 points100 points  (1 child)

But it's a fun pile of shit

      [–]moonra_zk 7 points8 points  (1 child)

You don't need the special animations, though, just slow down the normal ones and reduce the characters speed.

      [–]TheeFlyGuy8000 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Someone has some beef I see

      [–]Chazalishesness 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Love the waddle run when he gets close to the shoreline in AC black flag, most realistic game animation I’ve ever seen

I put this in the r/gaming post as well, but the original creator of this clip is called Rabbit's Respawn. He's an excellent creator, and I highly recommend checking him out.

P.S. Please remember to credit the original creators when making posts of another work in general

      [–]unicornGeralt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel so bad when so many posts don't credit the source. Like the post on r/gaming had the top comment highlighting that OP didn't credit the source, OP here could've at least seen that before cross posting.

      [–]MassiveGG 28 points29 points  (1 child)

only played the first AC and blackflag and i felt Blackflag is overall just a well made game even when AC has been a series that rapidly shits out a new one every few years.

      [–]rScoobySkreep 5 points6 points  (0 children)

      Black flag is incredible

      [–]zachriel1919 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's always these little details that pull the room together for me. Walking up stairs correctly is a big one for me too.

ironically enough i enjoyed legion alot

      [–]KaiBluePill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, i played the first Watch dogs and the game wasn't great either. I mean... It was cool... but not top tier cool.

I think we should lower expectations a little.

      [–]1enopot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ubisoft: good ideas almost always executed poorly ™

      [–]FatherPucci617 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean in blackflags you spend most of the time at sea so its gonna look good while at watchdogs how many time will you go to water

      [–]jewboyfresh 10 points11 points  (4 children)

      It makes sense

Blackflag was a game built entirely around water and being a pirate. It makes sense they would put a lot of resources into water physics

On the other hand games like WatchDogs and GTA are primarily land games so they put a lot of resources into car and collision physics. Why would watchdogs spend a fuck ton of time, money, and resources so that OP can accurately run across a pond

      [–]Razgriz01 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Honestly, put aside all the animations and polish and what not. They could have done something as simple as implementing a movement speed debuff (maybe walk mode only) when in water under a certain depth, but they didn't even bother with that.

      [–]Skyeblade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't even care about the running speed, that splash animation though is straight-up worse than a ps2 game

      [–]imaethan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly that just sounds annoying and doesn't improve gameplay at all.

      [–][deleted] 71 points72 points  (75 children)

ah yes let me compare animations of running in water from a game based around water to a game that barely has any sort of water at all.

don't know why people treat this as some sort of GOTCHA UBISOFT, its fucking stupid lol

      [–]YoloSwaggins77 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I didn't even know there was any water other than the Thames lol

      [–]batatassad4 164 points165 points  (51 children)

It's still an incredible lack of attention to detail and polishing

      [–][deleted] 93 points94 points  (37 children)

Yeah a game hasn't got to be water based to put in the added polish and attention to detail.

      [–]jlaweez 43 points44 points  (11 children)

Especially when those physics were already on AC3.

      [–]Constant_Tea 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Except that they don't use the same engine so it would have been an unnecessarily pain in the ass to add it to the game again ? I'd prefer if they fixed the really problematic bugs first instead of doing this

      [–]kxania 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'd prefer if they fixed the really problematic bugs

So you admit the game is broken and unfinished lmao that's what this video is saying

      [–]Constant_Tea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The video only shows different water physics, which is definitely not an issue or something that was supposed to be improved.

      [–]UltimateMelonMan 6 points7 points  (6 children)

I like how someone downvoted you as if what you said was not true.

      [–]jlaweez 17 points18 points  (5 children)

They did? Welp. Gotta take some hits sometimes.

Anyways. AC used to be one of my fave franchises on PS3 gen. There was nice writing, amazing settings and an awesome premise. I still remember when they didn't implement swimming and Altair would simply die if fell on water. When AC3 introduced Naval Battles and Black Flag improved them I was actually amazed by that. I loved to set sail and just sink some foes.

I didn't play Legion, but even MMOs from godforsaken eras had some water physics to them... This looks lazy.

      [–]RagingAlien 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I still remember when they didn't implement swimming and Altair would simply die if fell on water.

Which I always thought was funny, but also made some amount of sense. Not everyone at the time would necessarily learn how to swim, and even if know how to, doing so with clothes on can be incredibly difficult - and that's without the whole cloak thing going on.

      [–]jlaweez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And in-game it made even more sense, they simply didn't have water physics on Animus, which they patched on a later version.

      [–]UltimateMelonMan 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Yeah, many people in this thread are like « how can you be so entitled as to expect water physics » and I’m like, with the amount of time devs spend on the game, they should take a little bit of time to have the animation be slightly different, or at least slowed down.

      [–]Skyeblade 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Not to mention that watchdogs is a troubled franchise and you would have thought that they would be making maximum effort

      [–]UltimateMelonMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! It just seems a bit lazy that they wouldn’t give that a bit lore details...

      [–][deleted]  (6 children)

        [–]besthelloworld 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, in a general sense, sort of. Most technological boundaries that become surpassed commonly are usually riding the backs of the giants before then who have already solved the problem. However, in a more specific sense, definitely not. All games are designed in different engines utilizing different systematic frameworks. And even two applications written in similar technologies often have some framing for the specific thing they're trying to do which might make sharing logic between them nearly impossible and/or just not worth it. So even though they're both Ubisoft, sharing this kind of feature might be way to expensive.

However, what we're viewing for ACBF is definitely motion capture, which, if you had the motion capture still in it's raw format you might be able to convert it between engines and frameworks fairly reasonably without much trouble. So there's a chance that you're right?

So let's say that the raw motion capture was preserved. Let's use it! Slow down buckaroo. How often are you in water in WDL? Not often. Okay so let's build the game out before adding edge-case fancy pants shit like this. Okay the game is done? Do we want to throw it into a day-one patch? As I remember it, WD1 forgot to provide any animation for when bullets hit water. We'll just fix it post release. Okay I patched in your fancy pants animation and now the game gets 15 frames per second on the current consoles when you do that. Why? Well WDL is an aggressively complex problem to solve. Because there are vehicles (up to dozens rendered at a time) and they're moving fast and they have complex state that we can't anticipate because they have to react and course correct in real time if the player fucks with them. Not to mention every rendered NPC and enemy is actually a randomly generated playable characters with abilities and state. All coming into existence as the player moves throughout the world. Not to mention all the hackable items and the fact that on a dime the user may need to hack into a drone flying 200ft away so we need to keep higher distances rendered at higher quality.

tl;dr WDL has much more going on in a faster paced world so even if you could just copy and paste the code over, making it run on current hardware might be a nearly impossible task

        [–]tpbana -3 points-2 points  (4 children)

Would think so too. Copy and paste some code; at the very least use of it as a template.

Edit: I’d assume the hard work has already been done on physics and animation. Its not like they have zero knowledge about how to go about it. Copy paste was not meant to be taken literally...

        [–]Thebubumc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

        copy and paste some code

Absolute reddit moment right there. Go in any thread about a game and some arm chair developers will tell you how easy it is to fix bugs in games that hundreds of people worked on.

"Haha just paste the code from this 6 year old game on a completely different engine with completely different code, it's easy"

        [–]besthelloworld 11 points12 points  (2 children)

That's quite a wild oversimplification you've got there.

        [–]Jutzking 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Lol I love how people that have no idea what they're talking about have such confidence in their opinions

        [–]besthelloworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

        I mean, I'm a software engineer, so I think that's actually what you're doing.

EDIT: Downvote me for being a tired dick, you were on my side of this discussion weren't you?

        [–]Gonzako 14 points15 points  (15 children)

It's still manpower that could be used doing something more useful. As most ppl say, focus the polish on the center mechanic. Everything's allowed to be rough around the edge s

        [–]Abedbob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This might be an unpopular opinion, but Legion has the most alive feeling open world map I’ve ever seen in any Ubisoft game. A ton of people and traffic with pretty good interaction between NPCs make it feel really interesting to explore. The game/story itself has pretty major flaws but I’d say the map got the polish and attention to detail treatment it deserved.

        [–]nematoad22 10 points11 points  (1 child)

That's the ubisoft formula. Also when you shoot people it just looks like there going to sleep. No bullet damage whatsoever.

        [–]iThinkergoiMac 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But Assassin’s Creed is also Ubisoft, so your statement doesn’t make any sense.

        [–][deleted]  (1 child)

          20 mph is 32.19 km/h

          [–]lowertechnology -4 points-3 points  (7 children)

Or it’s a choice to prioritize fun over realism. Does it matter that it’s easy to run in water in Watch Dogs? Red Dead 2 leaned more towards realism than Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Did the realism make it better?

          [–]iThinkergoiMac -1 points0 points  (6 children)

          Yes, it does matter.

          [–]lowertechnology 1 point2 points  (5 children)

          Ok. Why?

It makes it more “real”. But does it make it more fun?

          [–]Sonething_Something 12 points13 points  (3 children)

apparently the animations are from ac3 tho

          [–]whatifcatsare 1 point2 points  (2 children)

And WDL is built in an entirely different engine

          [–]TheRageTater 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Right but it's been 7 years (8 if you wanna count that this animation was AC3), surely they could've managed

          [–]whatifcatsare 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been playing the game for nearly 20 hours now, and not once have I found a spot where I can be half in the water like shown in this clip. It is such a rare occurrence I'm not surprised they didn't bother. Almost all other instances of water are sheer dropoffs, like into the Thames. Its really a non-problem.

          [–]GennyGeo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’d like to see them compare car-hacking-physics between both games

          [–]153Skyline 28 points29 points  (6 children)

This is like saying racing games don’t need a skybox because you don’t fly in them.

          [–]JamesThePrince 23 points24 points  (3 children)

That’s... completely different? You still SEE the skybox at all times on a racing game. You’re not running through water at all times in watch dogs. If ever.

Are you seriously surprised a game based around water has more attention to detail for water?

          [–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Kay, but the water is there still and you can interact with it. There’s no excuse they couldn’t have at least changed the spray from running to look more similar to AC4 since it looked better.

          [–]153Skyline 7 points8 points  (1 child)

So you’re saying that only things that are constantly in view in games and important to the core gameplay should have detail? Look at other open world games. Grand Theft Auto and Just Cause often have high attention to detail with things that aren’t essential to the core gameplay. Even indie development studios like SCS Software which develops Euro Truck Simulator puts detail into their open world games and pamper their gameworlds more than Ubisoft does. This is just Ubi being lazy and for a AAA open world game at full price that is the third in a series, there really isn’t an excuse for them to start leaving out things that were present in previous games just because it’s not always on screen.

EDIT: Additionally, I’m not saying that Watch Dogs Legion is automatically a bad game because they left a detail out, but it just makes you wonder is all.

          [–]SausageMcMerkin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would compare it more to water on a track. Why would it affect handling? You're in a car, not a boat.

          [–]seductivestain 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I think you're taking this a bit too seriously

          [–][deleted] -5 points-4 points  (2 children)

tell that to the people pissed over a running in water animation as if it trashes the entire game
they treat it as some sort of gotcha when it's an animation you'll almost never see in the game anyways.

Oh no, what am I gonna do when my swimming animations are half-assed?! THE INDUSTRY IS RUINED!!!
            Whatever you say, lol.

To be fair, it's clearly a mechanic they've mastered before. So it's quite reasonable to expect it in their future games. Water based or not.

            [–]Day_will_Fall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is the same mentality why Ubisoft always makes mediocre games

            [–]xxDoublezeroxx -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

With that logic only core gameplay functions should have detail. NPC cars? Low poly. Falling from a height? T-pose. Killing enemies? Only one scripted death with the Wilhem Scream.

            [–]Soviet-Biscuit 3 points4 points  (3 children)

To be fair, Edward is wearing a heavy ass trench coat with 4 flintlock pistols, a sword, smoke bombs, a blow dart pipe with 2 different types of darts, rope darts, maps, and a hidden blade on both arms

Assassin creed black flag is the only AC game I cared about and even playing it I felt like an idiot trying to collect all those floating diamonds. Whatever company make those games really missed out on just making a gta/RDR2 version of black flags without the stupid diamonds.

            [–]CyberStasis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blackflag was gorgeous, I loved playing that game. I could really use another Pirate game like that in my life again.

            [–]ImpDoomlord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It takes development time to add features like that, for a game that takes place 75% near or in water it makes sense for Black Flag. There are a lot of other systems in Watch Dogs, the devs of every game can’t just make every aspect perfect and still release on time.

            [–]SMACKEY17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Person 1: “We should have a separate anim for running in water so our game doesn’t look silly and end up on Reddit.”

Person 2: “We don’t have time for that!”

1: “Okay but don’t you think there’s a water running anim from one of our 20+ open world games that are all built on the exact same engine that we could just import?”

2: “No and I refuse to check.”

            = Watch Dogs Legion

            Water is just an illusion

            [–]octopus-god 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A game designed to have the player constantly interacting with water

            Vs

A game where you are literally never required to go into the water.

There no need to have it in watch dogs. It would just bulk out the code for no fucking reason.

Wow, an actual GIF! I haven't seen one of those in ages! I forgot how terrible they actually looked for video.

Running in water always frustrated me in Black Flag, but not because it was unrealistic, just that I wanted to go fast.

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And you guys keep buying it up!

            [–]alexcalvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess being in water is an intrinsic part of one and is a tiny part in the other. Developers have limited resources, even massive ones, so it's about where you wanna put your effort I guess.

He hacked the water density and made it similar to air. Even water in Watch dogs can be hacked

            [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No you see water in the Caribbean is different than water in London’s harbor I know the viscosity is god awful it’s why I never swim in the uk the water quality is god awful
