Sunday Show Off - Because it's perfectly fine to admit you're also doing bodyweight fitness to do cool tricks in front of people!

Maintaining fitness while aging
Maintaining fitness while aging

I'm 71. Despite consistent bodyweight training, I can't approach the level of fitness I had just a few years ago.

When I was 64, I could do three sets of 10 chin-ups. Then, a bike accident. Broke three ribs, collarbone, punctured lung. For a few years afterwards I couldn't do a single chin-up.

Now I do 3-4 even though I 'm 15 lb lighter. Despite consistent training, I'm not making much progress. None, if I'm honest. Perhaps even regressing.

My question is this: is this a natural result of aging? Is it a fool's errand to try to get back to the strength level of 6-7 years ago? Should I try a different training regimen? Just accept that I'm old and weak?

In some areas I've actually improved. I can do a plank for 5 minutes, not possible when I was younger. I am much more flexible - closing in on splits.

But I didn't used to train in those areas and now I do. In the areas I care more about, upper body stuff, I do seem to be moving backwards despite constant work.

Any advice is appreciated.
