TIL Alfred Nobel (creator of dynamite) is thought to have created the prize after an unflattering obituary naming him the “Merchant of Death.”

TIL the "Nobel Prize in Economics" isn't a real Nobel Prize. It was established over 70 years after the death of Alfred Nobel, is sponsored by a bank and is officially only "in memory of Alfred Nobel"

TIL that after the death of Ludvig Nobel, brother of Alfred Nobel the inventor of the dynamite, a French newpaper mistook him for his brother and wrote a scathing obituary for Alfred Nobel. This caused Alfred to consider his legacy and caused him to create what today we call the Nobel Prize.

TIL In 1888 Alfred Nobel (of Nobel Prize fame) was astonished to read his own obituary titled "The merchant of death is dead". Actually it was his brother Ludvig who died but the article disconcerted Nobel about how he would be remembered and inspired him to change his will.

TIL that it is unknown why the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded in Norway despite the other Nobel Prizes being awarded in Sweden. Alfred Nobel, who the awards were established in memory of, said that it should be that way in his will and gave no explanation as to why

This sub is meant to be a place to discuss the effect under the presupposition that for whatever reason, *it is really happening,* at the exclusion of the theory of Confabulation. Alfred Nobel’s premature obituary calling him a “merchant of death” never happened

I was researching Mandela Effect’s on celebrity deaths and any connections to premature obituaries, and then found out that Nobel never was called a merchant of death when alive or for decades after, he never created Nobel Prize awards in response to it.

The story was made up by a biographer in the 1950s, or at least he unsourced the claim. Additionally, there are no newspaper articles whatsoever with the premature obituary in record, or any discussing it until the 1950s. It also appears that the Prizes were not created in a reaction to dynamite and its use in warfare, i.e., to rehabilitate his name with the public, as Nobel was proud and believed it would end war.

TIL the Nobel Prize in Economics isn't a "real" Nobel prize and wasn't created by Alfred Nobel. It was created in 1968 by the Sveriges Riksbank and is officially called the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel.
