Aegean Islands

Tomorrow Greece and Turkey will sign a deal about a special tourist visa for Turkish citizens. It will allow them to quickly visit the Eastern Aegean islands for one week, bypassing normal Schengen rules. Thoughts?

Why does it surprise people in 2024 that there is significant Slavic ancestry in mainland Greece and that it is even present on Crete and the Aegean islands? And that Balkan Slavs are often 50%+ Slavic?

I’m not asking to be inflammatory but yet another study which came out in the last few months placed Slavic ancestry in Balkan Slavs as 50%+, mainland Greece as 30-40%, the Aegean islands as 3-20%.

Some people really believe that the light hair and eyes present in some isolated regions of Crete are because of “pure ancient Doric Greek DNA” 🙄 or that Balkan Slavs have minimal Slavic ancestry.

Why is this surprising to anyone? Has no one ever seen even one Greek person who looked shockingly Eastern European in a way you might not have expected? You truly don’t see Eastern European influences in the features of some Bulgarians and Serbs?

Greece Rebuffs Turkish Demands to Demilitarize Aegean Islands
r/geopolitics

Geopolitics is focused on the relationship between politics and territory. Through geopolitics we attempt to analyze and predict the actions and decisions of nations, or other forms of political power, by means of their geographical characteristics and location in the world. In a broader sense, geopolitics studies the general relations between countries on a global scale. Here we analyze local events in terms of the bigger, global picture.
