Today the yanks start a 3 game set in Cleveland. To get it going tonight they will face righty Aaron Civale who owns a 7.2 ERA over 40 IP.
some nuggets about Civale:

Civale throws all the pitches. Like really. Most in use is his Cutter, the Curve and the Sinker. But he will also throw a 4sm FB, a Slider, Splitter and a Change. Against righties these pitches are also very evenly devided. Against lefties thats not the case. 50% cutter and 25% Curve. So lefties will probably have a better time guessing whats coming.

Now the Cutter he likes to throw was very good last year. Among the best pitches in baseball. This year it is a different story. Its now ranked below average. Just like all his pitches this year are ranked below average.

Speaking of these other pitches. Its not how they move or how they spin. Because his Fastballs and Curveballs are amongst the top 5% in Spin. The Curveball of his also moves a ton. both ways. So i guess its something to do with the fact that the velocity of his pitches is ranked in the bottom 5% of the league. But we all know that velocity isnt everything (cortes), so i guess these pitches are likely very badly positioned over the plate.

With an above average Walk rate and below average Striekout rate, we are bound for a lot of balls in play again. The last two pitchers who had lots of those had lots of luck behind them. Civale doesnt. His actual ERA of 7.20 compares to an expected ERA of 4.96. That still would be bad, but a lot less bad than 7.20. All in all Civale has combined for negative 1.3 WAR and an allowed OPS of .887. Also, once runners are on: allowed OPS of 1.036.

Civale wasnt always like this however. 2019 and 2020 were acutally really good. 2021 and now this year have been bad again. One thing that stands out to me, is the fact that Civale was a "fast" pitcher in 19/20 and in 21/22 is considered a "slow" pitcher. I dont know why he has slowed down so much, but it didnt help his game.

He has allowed at least 2 Runs in all but one game this year.
If the yanks want to start their hitting again, tonight maybe the night.
