My first palace game as a recently moved kiwi! The lads tried very hard, Guehi very unlucky, feel bad for him.

[–]Abush9527Crystal Palace USA:Palace_US: 32 points33 points  (0 children)

First 25' I thought we'd be lucky to not lose by 5. After that though, I feel like we deserved a point but lack of finishing (as per usual) cost us dearly

[–]Anthonybyh 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Pretty even game. Both teams had a couple chances. They scored, we didn't.

Ayew was excellent second half. Schlupp and Eze pretty invisible first half. Mateta improvement when came on.

Eze should of scored. One of those games!

Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake.

It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of.

Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything.

Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.

[–]PearWamanLordCabaye 31 points32 points  (4 children)

Jordan Ayew playing 90 minutes is a crime. Ebiowei offered more in 5. Could've been worse, we showed signs of life but not much creativity. Need another signing or two I think

[–]IIHollywoodII 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Def not the biggest ayew guy but he did have some moments.

[–]Anthonybyh 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Ayew was best Palace player second half

[–]HoyasRangers 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I don't see that at all. All kidding aside can you tell me why you think that?

[–]Anthonybyh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good wing play, driving runs, decent cross or two while still defending

[–]DifficultyMore5935 12 points13 points  (3 children)

Chelsea fan here and holy shit Anderson looks like a good player. He was my motm above any Arsenal player.

A better finish from Eze and who knows how that game goes. You’re a very good team.

[–]DreyerMagi -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Saliba was better imo

[–]GreenMachine17 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Saliba looked more dominant defensively but Andersons long passing was world class. Almost every dangerous attack started with him

[–]DreyerMagi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. His passing is cracked

[–]Stonekidd1 14 points15 points  (6 children)

We matched them after the first 25 minutes.

We need a striker this window - those two got bossed around the whole game and may aswell have stayed at home.

Eze was decent, needs to up his tempo a little bit, he showed good passing and made some mazy runs, just needs some more PL matches to up his game IMO. Should have tucked his chance away though.

Schlupp and Ayew were poor on the right for me. Ayew killed off so many attacks by just passing back instead of trying to progress the ball. Worst 90 I've seen from him in a while. Schlupp for me is a super sub, shouldn't be starting, Hughes should be on the team sheet ahead of him tbh.

Saka ran Mitchell ragged tonight. Wouldn't take too much from that - Saka is an elite player, and Mitchell is just a good player. Two footed wingers are really hard to play against.

Doucoure was solid in possession, intercepted passes and tried to play positively. Shame he came off with cramp for Luka - would have preferred Richards on and an attempt at a back 3.

Andersen and Zaha were the best players on the pitch for us by a mile. Swear to god those two are telepathic at times. Joachim's passing is simply beautiful.

Some great defending from Saliba kept us out, and Jesus on the attack made us look vulnerable to a False 9 (which is becoming increasingly more popular).

Once again set pieces our undoing, need a set piece coach in ASAP.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (4 children)

I thought Ayew was excellent. Beat Zinchenko time after time and he ended up getting hooked. Agree with Mitchell assessment though, would not mind Jairo starting at Anfield.

[–]HoyasRangers 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Is this serious? Ayew should never be in the XI in my opinion.

[–]kbvirus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree and I didnt think that's an unpopular opinion.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I’m no lover of JA but can appreciate when he puts in a good shift, and he was a threat for sure. Was at the game and all the people around me were saying the same.

[–]HoyasRangers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me this is mostly spot on. Quibble a bit with Doucoure. Eze has to finish that. And Edouard has to head that ball back to the way it came from right down to the goal line for the power.

[–]etchgtownCrystal Palace USA 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Edouard or Eze has to finish their chance. Get the game to 1:1 and see what happens. Maybe Arsenal take it back over. Who knows. Benteke may be gone, but his spirit lives on.

Mitchell looked uncomfortable against Saka all match, and with help nearby on the cutback side, he can't let in that cross for the second goal.

Eze is often too slow to act. He needs to process faster as he matures. Just too languid a style for most premiership matches.

Conceding from corners is standard it seems.

[–]zahasendsshops 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Andersen with a near-perfect performance. Bloke played like Tom Brady. Olise and competent midfielder coming in for Ayew and Schlupp and we’re flying.

Please never have Ayew play for us again.

[–]kbvirus 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I found schlupp out of shape and I think we need a replacement in the midfield.

[–]zahasendsshops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You find correct!

[–]Anthonybyh -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Ayew our best player second half

[–]Perfectionimproved 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Arsenal fan coming in peace. Andersen was ridiculously good.

[–]captain_beefheart14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ditto, would like to see a comp of his long passes

Edit: found a clip on Twitter, these passes are even scarier than in the game, watching them back. This is what I wanted Ben White to do

[–]AdaSirinMcArthur 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I've been tempted to say it for a while, so at the risk of seeming opportunistic: Andersen > Guehi, and by a significant margin. He's more reliable defensively, imposes himself on the game much more, and is infinitely better going forward. I honestly think Guehi's England caps have caused us to overrate him a bit. He's good and has loads of potential, but there's a lot he really needs to work on. I'd like to see the Guehi hype come back down to earth a little and for us to appreciate what a player Andersen is a bit more.

My MOTM by a mile today.

[–]HoyasRangers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. Constantly closing space which broke up a lot of what Arsenal wanted to do especially after first 15 min or so. And his skip passes are unreal. Feel like we need to try to use the HM a bit more to move forward though.

[–]BionicPopsicleEze 14 points15 points  (3 children)

I don’t care what anyone says if Olise was fit and played, we probably draw at least. An own goal and set piece defense is the difference, and Ayew killed at least 6 attacks.

We also desperately need an actual box to box type of midfielder inbetween Ebs and Doucoure. No shade to Schlupp but he’s not what we need there imo

[–]Abush9527Crystal Palace USA:Palace_US: 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Schlupp is great subbing in at the role for 15-20 minutes but agreed, need someone else from the start

[–]HoyasRangers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes to this. Love Schlupp to come on between 65-70 but he seemed lost at times in 1st half today.

[–]PuzzleheadedBat1541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all fairness Ayew committed like 8 fouls, whatever he does, he seens to have the refs backing. Good game from palace though in the second half.

[–]meulner 15 points16 points  (2 children)

i miss gallagher

[–]therealjudithcollinsMurray 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Some guys at the game were saying Palace should’ve got a replacement called Lingardinho, is he any good? I can’t find information on him, sounds Brazilian.

[–]NewmindsetNew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Way overrated for the wages, not even a joke

[–]Unwanted-Boy69 10 points11 points  (2 children)

as an arsenal fan, you lot played well, anderson’s passes scared me at times, his passing is sensational. you just got unlucky i’m sure you will have a bright season

[–]vevevenus354 9 points10 points  (0 children)

we massively rode our luck first 25 mins of the game, couldve easily been 3 or 4 down, yeah we had a couple of chances we probably should've scored but i think the luck evened out and 2-0 is a fair result

[–]spad807 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I thought it was more like both teams played shit after Arsenal dominated the opening 20. Not exactly a spectacle of football that. Lacked energy, creativity, and finishing.

[–]ddottayCrystal Palace USA:Palace_US: 17 points18 points  (5 children)

Please, no more Ayew. Ever.

Eze and Edouard are going to have nightmares tonight.

[–]X-Mosaic 8 points9 points  (4 children)

Seriously? Ayew was fantastic tonight. Got Zinchenko subbed off cos he was all over him.

[–]EmperorBeakyZaha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

And did absolutely nothing when he got in good positions, as per

[–]zahasendsshops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nonsense. Andersen got him subbed off with inch perfect passes. Ayew was hopeless and at fault for their second.

[–]HoyasRangers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really must be missing something if folks think Ayew contributed positively tonight.

Andersen was by far the best Palace player on the pitch.

[–]memelord_plus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arsenal fan here, zinchenko got subbed off late in the game to allow tierney a few minutes to get his fitness back. Had nothing to do with ayew or his performance

[–]scoopnatRiedewald 8 points9 points  (1 child)

It’s a repeat of so many games last season - a lot of huff and puff and conceding goals from set pieces and there’s no excuses for that second season around. The same subs made when we’ve already lost instead of proactively changing it.

Hard to see any positives from this game.

[–]HoyasRangers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still created several opportunities. If Eze finishes we may have stolen a point w a mediocre effort.

[–]rain_parkourCrystal Palace USA:Palace_US: 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll choose to remain optimistic. Better play occurred after the 25th minute, but it’s such a rough stretch in opponents to start the year

[–]GoofredTheGreat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clyne/ Ayew is a relegation standard right side pairing. Ayew works hard and is good when he's direct, but even when he is 'direct' he still slows play, turns in wide circles and doesn't know when to play a pass. They ushered us to the right all game and we had it in good positions but played 5 one-twos on the right wing and waited for them to get set before floating an aimless ball in. Lucky Andersen was spraying cross field balls to get us forward .

Can't wait for Olise's return. Second half team performance encouraging until the final ball, for a change. Excited for the season but fear we may fall short of the position our performances merit again

Chances of signing another striker now Benteke been shifted?

[–]IIHollywoodII 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thought palace was the better team from the 30th minute on. Missed a few chances but on a different day definitely could've came out with a draw or tie

[–]MangoLordXL 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Gooner here, you lot are seriously good. This project is very much something that will come good in a few seasons, you competed with us well and controlled possession. It really was a game of inches.

[–]Rustic41Ayew 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Liked the look of Doucoure and Andersen was class. I feel like we are short on depth. I know everyone and their mum wants a new striker but I genuinely think we are in serious need of a number 8 as well.

[–]BionicPopsicleEze 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Give me a number 8 all day before a striker. Eddy didn’t look great but him and JPM can do the job for now

[–]creamcornsperm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An 8 and a striker are equally needed. Édouard and JPM don't strike fear in defenders. They don't have that killer instinct, yet. They'll have to challenge themselves this season.

[–]paradigmshift7Guaita 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly not a terrible match, though we were slow out the gate, per usual, and conceding from a corner sucks of course. There were stretches where Eze looked good orchestrating the attack in the middle, the hustle was there and it took a good save from Ramsdale to keep us from equalizing. Looking forward to Villa.

[–]electroplankton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought we were decent, set piece hurt us again for no fucking reason (how have we not worked on this??) but we put some decent attacking play together. I honestly just thought arsenal played an extremely strong first half, and we were okay in the second. Doucoure looked good. Mateta better than Edouard, at least for this game. Zaha excellent. Andersen had a good game. On and up.

[–]Herzogsteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you see how much they watered the pitch at half time? It's almost like they wanted to give Ayew another reason to fall over

[–]Weallluvfutball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overall, I thought the result was a fair reflection of what happened on the pitch. Arsenal were more clinical when it mattered. Couple of opportunities which we should’ve capitalised on but wasn’t our day.

Ayew on the right is painful to watch starting. I think he does a job for us, he’s great defensively and brilliant for keeping possession, drawing fouls and generally frustrating the defence, but he offers little in the way of attacking creativity. He’s a such you bring on in the 70th minute to manage a game to it’s conclusion.

Olise’s injury is a problem but he will be back on the pitch. Ebiowei was great when he came on but I think it was the right call for him not to start and to come on late, it’s his first time playing in the prem and going up against Zivchencko would’ve been a baptism of fire and knocked his confidence.

Otherwise, the lads tried hard and the future is bright, this game doesn’t define our season, Eze is looking brighter and brighter and Zaha is such a threat. Lots of positives

[–]DragonfruitLeading44Crystal Palace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

vieira needs to learn from his mistakes. match exemplified issues that plagued us all last season and kept us from stepping into the top half

[–]Golden-Wonder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usual stuff poor finishing and defending set pieces. Positive though we took the game to them.

I always look at these games (the usual top six) as bonuses, sometimes we may get a win or a draw but we are normally going to lose. It’s the other teams we need to beat using that drive we’ve shown tonight.

Regroup, let’s go again COYP!

[–]EmperorBeakyZaha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spooky performance when the goons sat back. Hope we have more about us against low blocks this season than that, we only looked dangerous from transitions and Andersen long balls

[–]lmorant97 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You played us great. I really rate Andersen, Eze looked sharp but also rusty, but I think by the end of the season he’s on everyone’s minds as potential star.

If I were you I’d be looking to bring in another dynamic central midfielder. Once Olise is fit you guys should be saucy. Glad we got this one out of the way, top 6 teams WILL drop points at Selhurst.

Good luck this season!

[–]DreyerMagi -3 points-2 points  (2 children)

Bring Andersen to the Arsenal!

[–]EmperorBeakyZaha 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Shut up

[–]DreyerMagi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Zaha can come too!

[–]das-machineSperoni 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I genuinely.thougjt we played today as if it was a other friendly. Genuinely seemed like we weren't awake. I'm not massively down but I hope we improve. Also need to sort out out second half conceding

[–]HoyasRangers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The corners defending is consistently not good. Lucky they did not score 4 min in but that defending was just horrid.
