Anyone sick of generic animated sitcoms?

I'm so sick of these generic animated sitcoms built in the vein of Family Guy and the Simpsons. And for whatever reason, entertainment studios are obsessed with churning out these low quality animated sitcoms that have the depth of a cut of printer paper. Every single one of these shows is about a middle-class suburban family, who are presumably financially well off to own a home in a decent neighborhood despite there only being one parent working and the other one staying at home.

The characters are always in this mold:

The Dad: Usually a fat dumbass, who loves drinking and works a shitty low-status job that somehow gives him enough income to raise an entire family and pay for a multi-bedroom single-family house. Is usually unintelligent, morally flawed but still loves his wife and children so much and has a heart of gold, which is usually where the main focus of the plot revolves around

The Mother: Usually a smoke show and very attractive, with seemingly little character flaws and content being married to a fat loser. Has about zero character depth whatsoever and has a bad relationship with her birth family

The Son: The son is either a complete loser nerd, who has a small group of friends in the same boat as him. Constantly makes his Father ashamed and can't get that one attractive girl to like him ( which is where 90% of his plot revolve) or a delinquent rebel that curses and is meant to be funny and is despised by the Father and doted on by the mother

The Daughter: Extremely intelligent and like the mother generally lacks any serious character flaws except being to hard on herself or being a perfectionist. Is generally misunderstood by the rest of the family and aliented to some extent. Usually has some proclivities towards liberal politics or Feminism

The young child: Usually a character that around infant to toddler ages. Either neglected or forgotten by the plot or a huge part. Usually extremely intelligent for their age but no one from the family seems to ever be conscious of this.

The talking pet, robot or alien: Usually plays the crazy Uncle role for the family. Usually living with the family out of kindness. Usually, a comic relief character drinks, curses does drugs, and phase tons of sex. Morally flawed with an instinct to do the right thing

Almost every cartoon in this category almost always falls into one of these overused tropes, and it seems like a separate attempt to emulate Family Guy or the Simpsons without understanding what makes those shows so groundbreaking. The reason those shows were so groundbreaking was that they came at a time when a dysfunctional family presented on TV in this manner would be subversive and out of the norm. Instead of trying to focus on groups or people that society generally ignores, or present interesting tropes, ideas and subvert them in clever ways, all these shows just become generic fodder that tries to copy something that's already lost its luster. It's a time of TV to most past this and give us something different.

The Ironic Tragedy of the Greatest Animated Comedy Sitcom

Victor Aaron, the original voice of John Redcorn passed away during the early production of the show in 1996. This would serve to be an ill omen of what was to come.

Brittany Murphy, an amazing actress, suddenly passes away months after the show’s finale aired back in 2009.

Tom Petty, a heartland-rock icon, passes away just two months after preliminary talks of a King of the Hill revival begin, back in 2017.

Johnny Hardwick, arguably the most iconic character for this show and one of the main drivers behind the show’s comedy and plot lines, passes away after the show had began production for the revival season(a).

This really is the darkest timeline.

Why Bobby Hill is the best son character in animated sitcom series

In many animated sitcom series, the son is either an idiot or so dorky he gets bullied. Bobby is an interesting example. Bobby is a goof and a dork, but otherwise is able to connect with a lot of folks. He is bullied, but Hank and Connie did state that he usually joke his way out and befriend the bullies. He even stopped Chane from physically bullying him and just settle on verbally insulting him.

Bobby, while lazy and rebellious at times, does know when he goes too far and when Hank grounds or punish him, he takes it like a champ. When he realize he overspend Hank’s money and they aren’t rich, he worked hard to repay Hank. Honestly, out of most characters in the series, Bobby is the least flanderzation of them all.

Using Vtubing tech to create an animated sitcom?

I have this idea to create an animated sitcom like The Simpsons, Family Guy, or Bob's Burgers. But instead of traditionally animating it, I'm wondering if it's possible to use custom vtuber models and motion capture?

Has anyone done something like this or made any tutorials that would be useful? What programs would be best for this?

I've never done any vtubing before. My current plan is to use Vroid to make some basic models. Long-term I don't want anime style characters but it seems like an easy way to make one full episode just as a proof of concept.

My understanding is then I'd need a program like XR animator or warudo or vnyan for rigging and capture.

Then I'd basically act out each character myself. I'd probably want to use voice changers to easily make a unique voice for each character.

If several characters appear on screen at once, then presumably I'd have to act out each one at a time and then layer them over each other.

Some basic stuff I would need:

  • full body character models that I can pose in different ways... standing, sitting, crouching

  • basic facial expressions based on face capture: neutral, sad, angry, worried, etc

  • arm/hand motion capture in addition to just facial animations.

  • Lip synching with real mouth movements (doesn't have to be super elaborate at first. Just basic open and closed mouth without specific mouth shapes is fine.)

Basically I want to make a pretty janky proof of concept with free tools and create a 10 - 20 minute pilot episode, to decide if the idea works and its something i want to do. Then I would invest into better models and technology to keep improving my show.

I expect it would probably take me about 20 - 50 hours to make an episode with this method, but still way faster than the hundreds or thousands of hours it'd take to draw and animate the whole thing frame by frame.

The backgrounds for each scene I can make / draw / find myself

What do you think, does this seem like something I could create with just OBS and some basic vtubing tools and editing software?

Any advice?

Would you watch something like this on YouTube?
