American Medical Association

I'm a member of the American Medical Association, AMA.
r/dadjokes

Welcome! This is a friendly place for those cringe-worthy and (maybe) funny attempts at humour that we call dad jokes. Often (but not always) a verbal or visual pun, if it elicited a snort or face palm then our community is ready to groan along with you. To be clear, dad status is not a requirement. We're all different and excellent. Some people are born with lame jokes in their heart and so here, everyone is a dad. Some dads are wholesome, some are not. It's about how the joke is delivered.

I am the American Medical Association President-elect Dr. Gerald Harmon. I’m here to talk about COVID-19. AMA!

I am a board-certified family medicine physician, military veteran, South Carolina native, and soon-to-be president of the American Medical Association. I completed my medical degree at the Medical University of South Carolina and my residency at U.S. Air Force Regional Hospital.

I’ve been caring for patients in the Tidelands region of South Carolina for more than 35 years, where I’ve had the privilege of serving my community on the front lines throughout the most uncertain times of the past year.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, I’ve helped my patients identify their symptoms, evaluate their risk, and understand how we can avoid getting and spreading the illness. More recently, I’ve been answering their questions about the COVID-19 vaccines. Today, I’d love to do the same for you.

Let’s talk COVID vaccines. Ask me anything!

UPDATE: Thanks to everyone who joined us to talk about the COVID-19 vaccines! I hope you’ve learned something new. If you didn’t get your questions answered, please visit GetVaccineAnswers.org for information and resources vetted by the CDC to help you make a decision for yourself about the vaccines.

I want to know your thoughts on the American Medical Association (AMA)

I am a grad student in the health policy world, and I am trying to understand the biggest players in the health policy game. The AMA is consistently one of the biggest fish. For example, they oppose single payer healthcare and have successfully prevented other nationalized payer efforts in the past, e.g., with Eisenhower in 1945 (despite being supported by a majority of the public).

I want to know what you think about the AMA. Are you familiar with their political agendas? Do you agree/disagree with what they do? What kind of a role does the AMA play in your life? Are you active with the AMA?

I just wanted to put a feeler out there to better help me understand who to talk to in the medical world about the AMA. Your responses are appreciated!

We are doctors developing hormonal male contraceptives, AMA!

There's been a lot of press recently about new methods of male birth control and some of their trials and tribulations, and there have been some great questions (see https://www.reddit.com/r/news/comments/85ceww/male_contraceptive_pill_is_safe_to_use_and_does/). We're excited about some of the developments we've been working on and so we've decided to help clear things up by hosting an AMA. Led by andrologists Drs. Christina Wang and Ronald Swerdloff (Harbor UCLA/LABioMed), Drs. Stephanie Page and Brad Anawalt (University of Washington), and Dr. Brian Nguyen (USC), we're looking forward to your questions as they pertain to the science of male contraception and its impact on society. Ask us anything!

EDIT:

It's been a lot of fun answering everyone's questions. There were a good number of thoughtful and insightful comments, and we are glad to have had the opportunity to address some of these concerns. Some of you have even given some food for thought for future studies! We may continue answering later tonight, but for now, we will sign off.

EDIT (6/17/2018):

Wow, we never expected that there'd be such immense interest in our work and even people willing to get involved in our clinical trials. Thanks Reddit for all the comments. We're going to continue answering your questions intermittently throughout the day. Keep bumping up the ones for which you want answers to so that we know how to best direct our efforts.
