Beginning with AHS 1984 season, AHS has not "felt" the same

Long running shows always evolve, so it's not necessarily a bad thing, but beginning with 1984 (and the absence of so many of the "original, core cast"), AHS just doesn't have the same feel.

I had to slug through Double-Take, and have only gotten through a few episodes of NYC.

Part of it is that they are running out of the "traditional horror themes" and are having to use semi-horror themes. The other part of it is that the original cast is slowly fading away.

It's good to get fresh actors, and it's expected. I think I'm personally just holding on because the original core cast and the seasons with them were so iconic, that it will mentally take me time to view the recent seasons with a fresh pair of eyes.

Because of this, for me, the last few seasons have "felt" almost like a completely different show or a spinoff.

Recently just binged American Horror Story 1984 and found it to be one of the best seasons of that series. The storyline, throwback to slasher style horror, characters, soundtrack, all of it was just very well done. Especially when compared to some other seasons of that show. It had some brutal scenes, but it was still done in such a fun and nostalgic way which again is not always typical with this series. My only complaint would be the character of Rodriguez due to the number of times the guy says “satan”. Overall, a very solid season for those who are slasher fans.
