Planning on building a computer but need some advice? This is the place to ask! /r/buildapc is a community-driven subreddit dedicated to custom PC assembly. Anyone is welcome to seek the input of our helpful community as they piece together their desktop.
Hi!
I'm planning to build a new PC in the near future, mainly for productivity/3D graphics related tasks (large codebases compilation, 3D modelling, video editing plus some AI-related work and some sporadic gaming). The only CPU option I was considering until now, was the Intel Core i9 14900K. However, a response from a user in this subreddit made me reconsider my options.
Before I continue, a disclaimer: I'm not a fan of neither Intel nor AMD. If anything I say is wrong, please correct me in the comments. That's the reason I'm creating this post. I'm not an expert and I'm not willing to do strong statements of any kind regarding this topic.
Pros of Intel Core i9 14900K:
-
The best performer in the world right now for most use cases.
-
More stable than the AMD counterpart. I've seen several sources claiming that the AMD 7950X(3D) is not that stable. For example, a user review in claims that the 7950X3D "is haunted by software bugs" ( you have an example of a bug with AMD's CPU).
Pros of AMD Ryzen 9 7950X(3D):
-
Way more efficient than the 14900K.
-
Compatible with the AM5 chipset, which will be around until 2026 (which means I wouldn't need to change my motherboard if I decide to upgrade the CPU in the future, which is something I'll be forced to do if choose Intel's CPU).
(focused on productivity and 3D graphics) doesn't help to make things clearer. There are some use cases where the 14900K leads with a considerable margin, and some use cases where the 7950X(3D) leads with a considerable margin as well. Then, some tasks, such as code and shaders compilation, where these processors are pretty much tied (with a slight advantage for the 14900K, although in my opinion not big enough to be taken into consideration).
Which one should I choose? Is anything of what I said wrong? Did I miss some important aspects for either of them?
Edit: Prices for both CPUs are pretty much the same.

Overall I see approx ~1000x speed difference (MT). So 3 orders of magnitude in 24 years ! Keep going strong, AMD !
