All Along the Watchtower

The Dylan version is ok and the Hendrix version is fire, but what do you think it is about this song that makes everyone want to play it so much? The lyrics seem don't seem terribly personal, and I don't hear a lot of opportunity to put a personal spin on it (most bands seem to follow Hendrix's lead pretty closely).
What's there that I'm not hearing? Again, I like the song, but I'm not sure why it's so widely covered.

What is your favorite version of “All Along the Watchtower”? Recently listened to version from 12/16/92 and have had it on repeat for the last couple weeks. Love the extended drum intro on this version. Is this anyone’s favorite?
In my humble opinion, this is the best live version of All Along the Watchtower by any artist ever:
John Mayer absolutely killed it on the guitar, and the transition to Stairway to heaven at the end is brutal.

Basically, I really like both but I prefer this one more because for one reason, I just feel like Dylan’s voice fits the song more.
Dylan’s version gives it a more Folk Rock atmosphere which fits the song better as opposed to the psychedelic style Hendrix gave it.
And also, contrary to popular belief (as it seems like), I also really like Dylan’s harmonica solos in it. Not to say Hendrix’s guitar solos in it are terrible but the harmonic solos just fit in the song just as nicely.
What are your thoughts? Thank you.

I really love the song All Along the Watchtower, and I think that it has great depth to it.
Now, I was wondering what you guys know about this song, any history behind it, anything Dylan said about it, or do you just simply have your own view and interpretation of the song?

Be warned, this post isn't going to have much value other than doing what I'm sure thousands of others have already - praising the soundtrack.
But it really was great. I've always been a soundtrack person and I think they are so much more important than most people give credit for. A soundtrack can't make a show great on its own, but it's no coincidence that the greatest shows of all time also have beautiful soundtracks.
I watched this whole show for the first time this summer, and it wasn't until a few weeks after I finished it that All Along The Watchtower started creeping into my head, until now, to the point where I'm listening to it admittedly too much. The composition is brilliant, the unique "Cylon" melodic riff is hypnotic and addictive and the instrumentation is so interesting.
And it wasn't just this song either. Head Six's theme, Passacaglia, Battlestar Sonatica, there were so many incredibly impactful and memorable themes which I'm sure I could listen to and recognise a decade from now.
It really helped set BSG apart, both from other Sci-Fi and other shows in general. It was all so characteristic and perfectly placed. It's one of the main reasons that I'm already feeling the urge to rewatch the show, and I'm sure I will before long. What a soundtrack.
