Pi-Hole vs AdGuard Home in 2024

I've recently heated a critic of Pi-Hole, main points that I heard was:

  1. Pi-Hole Docker Containers have multiple vulnerabilities out of the box (which is not really important for me personally, because I don't use Pi-Hole in Docker)

  2. Pi-Hole doesn't support DoH by default (I know it can be turned on).

I'm a Pi-Hole user, and am really satisfied with it, what will be the comparison of current versions of Pi-Hole and AdGuard Home (I've found some historical comparisons, but I am curious about latest versions). Should I migrate from Pi-Hole to AdGuard Home?

📝 [Guide] AdGuard Home — Network Wide Ad Blocking in your Home lab

As I mentioned in my previous post, this week I am sharing about AdGuard Home, a network wide ad blocking that I am using in my home lab setup.

Blog: https://akashrajpurohit.com/blog/adguard-home-network-wide-ad-blocking-in-your-homelab/

I started with Pi-hole and then tried out AdGuard Home and just never switched back. Realistically speaking, I feel both products are great and provide similar sets of features more or less, but I found AGH UI to be a bit better to the eyes (this might be different from people to people).

The result of using this since more than a year now is that I am pretty happy that with little to no config on client devices, everyone in my family is able to leverage this power.

AdGuard Home Stats

Pair this with Tailscale and I have ad blocking even when I am not inside my home network, this feels way too powerful, and I heavily use this whenever I am travelling or accessing untrusted network.

What do you use in your network for blocking ads? And what are some of your configs that you found really helpful?

AdGuard and UBlock Origin

It is very interesting this two do the same thing. While I tested them and do the same job, for some reason people started speculating about AdGuard saying is bad, is from Russia and more bad speculation. AdGuard is really good, specifically now they have DNS and never had issues. Ublock is really good but if I want for my Phone, they don’t have apps. I don’t have option to use AdGuard obviously. I hope Ublock in the future have apps for Phone and maybe other stuff in the future. Anyway, I just want say I recommend both in my case I prefer AdGuard right now because everything by default do an excellent job and have more options to select in more platforms.

AdGuard not blocking ads

So recently I asked recommendations for adblockers on this sub and most of them recommended AdGuard as the free and best on for Safari.

But even after getting AdGuard I am not able to watch movies/ series online on websites due to excessive ads. I’ve enable all options as yes but the adblocker doesn’t seem to work at all, please let me know if I need to change any settings or something.

Or if there’s any other good free adblocker?

AdGuard Home vs. PiHole

I wasn’t aware of this offering by AdGuard, but the side-by-side comparison on GitHub caught my attention:

Has anyone switched? More importantly, is there reason to? Thanks for any insight on this

Giveaway AdGuard Lifetime License (3 Device)

I would like to give away a lifetime license. The license includes 3 devices. The license will be released from my account and the new owner can then add it to their account.

If you are interested, write here why you want them.

On June 8th, I will randomly decide who gets it.

How it works? I will put the total number of comments minus the non-existent upvotes in random.org and let the magic happen.

Example : Comments 53 - Upvotes 11 = 42 Missing Upvotes= 11 entries. Think about it :)

Comments are sorted by "oldest" and then descending as a number, starting at one.

The draw will be posted as a screenshot here on June 8th.

Thanks to all involved. The winner is chosen.

If you are still looking for a chance, you will find another offer here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Adguard/comments/143gpi6/giveaway_lifetime_adguard_ad_blocker_license_for/

Giveaway: Lifetime AdGuard Ad Blocker license for 3 devices

This giveaway has ended!

I have a lifetime AdGuard Ad Blocker license for 3 simultaneous devices.

As I am no longer planning to use it, I would like to organize a little giveaway.

I will unbind the license from my account, and share the license with the winner so they can add it to their account.

If you would like to make a chance to win this license, just drop a message down below, and I will randomly pick a winner on Friday 9 June at 12pm GMT+2.

Edit: A couple of people have asked me why I no longer plan on using AdGuard. The reason is that I have implemented an AdGuard Home DNS server in my network, and I find this solution more than sufficient for my use scenario, and so I am giving away my license.

Edit2: I have randomly selected a user from the list below. This user is u/MastedAway. I will contact you with the license key!

🤖🚀 AdGuard v4.3 for Android

Big announcement time! AdGuard v4.3 for Android is here and it heralds many new exciting features:

📺 Android TV support. This is by far the biggest and the most important new feature in quite some time. We basically developed a modified version of AdGuard for Android specifically for Android TV. The new design, fully adapted for Android TV, includes new onboarding tailored specifically for TVs, a new Home screen with statistics, adapted Protection and Settings screens. DNS protection🌐 adds an extra layer of security that you won't find anywhere else on Android TV.

‼️ Note: Android TV support is a feature exclusive to users with an AdGuard license, but you can go ahead and try 7-day free trial period.

More transparency in HTTPS filtering. AdGuard always checks that the websites you connect to possess a valid HTTPS certificate, but sometimes you just need to check for yourself. This is not a problem any more! Go to the "Recent Activity" tab to inspect the original certificate yourself.

🛠 Developer tools. This is another treat for more advanced users and filter developers. DevTools is a specialized section designed for quick navigation and quick access to features such as custom filters, logging level, and more. This feature can be enabled in Low-level settings.

Of course, we also updated CoreLibs and DnsLibs, and that results in improved HTML filtering and HTTP basic authentication support. Check out the blog article for more details about this milestone update and the new features introduced there.

Keep AdGuard for Safari alongside AdGuard Assistant?

Having loved AdGuard for Safari, I just got the lifetime license for AdGuard for Mac. After the install, both AdGuard for Safari and AdGuard Assistant are installed extensions in my browser. To ensure there are no weird conflicts, should I delete AdGuard for Safari from the browser? (Sorry if this is answered elsewhere; searched the forums and couldn't find anything!) Is there anything else a person should do when upgrading from AdGuard for Safari to AdGuard for Mac?

AdGuard VPN Review in 2024: is it good with adguard ad blocker?

I've been a Nord VPN user for several years but am considering switching to Adguard VPN because it works in tandem with the Adguard ad blocker. My VPN usage is primarily for torrenting, only a few times a month since I don't do much torrenting. After spending a few days researching online, I've come across several posts criticizing Adguard VPN, which has made me hesitate, especially since I was thinking about purchasing a 5-year subscription.
