Ace Combat: Assault Horizon

Hello guys, I wanted to ask which emulator is preferred when it comes to Assault Horizon, RPCS3 or Xenia? In terms of bugs and glitches like graphical errors.

I was going to ask this on but then I found out that apparently, you can't ask questions related to modern consoles.

The handheld run continues, but we're up to date now with the 3DS... he says, before realising this game is almost a decade old. Terrifying.

Despite the long winded name, this is actually a remake of Ace Combat 2. The Assault Horizon part of the title was specific to the western release, assumingly to try and cross-promote with the 7th gen console (and PC) game that came out around the same time. Besides the title, the games' only other similarity is that they both feature a kind of 'special move' designed to help keep the action more dynamic. It was called 'Dog Fight Mode' in Assault Horizon, and I hated it. As a result I have never completed that game. In fact it’s probably why I haven't played Legacy on the 3DS... until now.

So I'll get right to it. 'Attack Manoeuvres' as they're called in this game, involve keeping within missile range of an airborne target for long enough for a power bar to charge. When triggered you're given a 'canned animation' depicting your aircraft performing some flashy aerobatics that will result in you being behind the enemy. 

If you're lucky enough to have played the brilliant 'Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces' on the Wii then you'll be very familiar with how this concept can work well, and not feel like hand-holding and the removal of player agency (as it did with Assault Horizon on 360/PS3/PC).

'Attack Maneuvers' are entirely optional, they flow into the gameplay seamlessly, don't guarantee a kill every time, and most important of all, they're actually quite fun to use. It basically makes you feel like you're in Top Gun for a few moments and, really, isn't that what this kind of game is all about?

It's a short game, taking me about 7 hours to complete first time around but, being a Japanese game, it has replayability built into the structure - I think I've mentioned before that I much prefer this approach to the Western style of a 30 hour game that you're only going to play once (Obviously this doesn't apply to RPGs, but I don't play those). As much as this is a personal preference, I don't think it's contentious to say that short levels are a much better fit for handheld games - with the 3D off you could finish this game (once) on a single battery charge.

Don't turn the 3D off though, it looks great.

In Japan the game featured support for the circle pad pro; the ugly bolt on that gave the 3DS a second analogue stick. I'm sure it works well, but the annoyance for me is that it would be completely unnecessary if the game allowed you to remap yaw from the d-pad to the L/R buttons. It's the game's biggest misstep, as it requires you to move your thumb from the analogue stick to the d-pad meaning you're never in full control of the plane. 

Nethertheless, this is still a very good Ace Combat game. It lacks some of the earnestness of previous games and the yaw control is annoying, but as far handheld flight combat games go, this is probably the best there is.

I've seen the looks of disgust of disgust at assault horizon, but in my opinion, it isn't a bad a game.

You could say that it's a bad ace combat game, yet for child me it was the most brain stimulating thing I had

I know the game is roughly 10 years old, everyone knows it's bad, but I never fully grasped HOW BAD, I got this back in the beginning of 2016, and never t past the bomber infiltration mission 'till today.

By now it's really beating a dead and buried horse, but holy shit, this game is exeptionally unfun, even fighting the Fenrir in ACX is not this bad, I can't think of any mission in any AC I've played that is as bad as this entire game, with every single fight devolving into a dogfight mode attack, with some crafts (Lead Tgts) having enormous defenses and far too much durability, no air to ground engagements in the normal missions, being relegated to specific ground attack missions, inw hich you just go and bully tanks and infantry while going "twoppa twoppa".

The dogfight system is utter trash, you turn a game that is supposed to be about 3d maneuvering into a rail shooter, the missiles do reduced dmg against elite targets outside of it and it's so annyoing to go trough. And who the fuck thought that it was a fun idea to add an overheating mechanic for using the MG.

Have I already said how un-fucking-fun is to fight Markov? Damn, many complained about the Mihaly "bossfights" being railroaded, but this would make them go take a V2 and detonate it manually.

Thank god AC7 was so much more similar with it's "numbered" predecessors rather than having much in common with AH.

While Assault Horizon is certainly not on the same level as the main Ace Combat series, it's still a very enjoyable game, at least for me, and it was the game that turned me into an Ace Combat fan.

I also wish we could get the bomber missions back at some point in the Ace Combat series.

I'm about to go on a longish car trip and I was wondering if this game is a good AC game?

When it was released back in 2011, people hated it. Boring story, bad characters, the gameplay was unrealistic despite being set in the real world, they complained about being able to fly other aircraft other than fighters, the Call of Duty of Ace Combat etc. I couldn't disagree more.

The story and dialogue were excellent with characters that I cared about and plot twists and turns that kept me guessing. The gameplay was varied with you being able to control fighters, attack helicopters, a gunship, bombers and all of them having different gameplay styles and feels. There is never anything wrong with variety. The gameplay is incredibly satisfying and rewarding and has a fair bit of challenge to it.

The Assault modes require a fair bit of skill when compared to other Ace Combat games where you just point your nose at the enemy, wait for a lock on and shoot. In Assault Horizon, when using DFM you have to stay on the enemy's tail while they do their best to shake you off.

People that say that the Assault modes are unrealistic are wrong. While BVR is more prevalent in today's air combat, you cannot deny the importance of dogfighting. Assault Horizon is the only game that I have played that gives an accurate depiction of dogfighting with aircraft breaking apart, the immense pressure and intensity, knowing that anyone could shoot you down at any moment.

Calling Assault Horizon the Call of Duty of the Ace Combat franchise maybe accurate but that's not a bad thing considering it's closer to it's real world counterpart. Project Aces tried something different and it worked, at least for me as it's my favourite flight game of all time. The music is absolutely excellent as well.
