A Place Further than the Universe - Anime of the Week

Welcome to the weekly Anime of the Week Discussion Thread! Each week, we're here to discuss various older anime series. Today we are discussing...

A Place Further than the Universe

Filled with an overwhelming sense of wonder for the world around her, Mari Tamaki has always dreamt of what lies beyond the reaches of the universe. However, despite harboring such large aspirations on the inside, her fear of the unknown and anxiety over her own possible limitations have always held her back from chasing them. But now, in her second year of high school, Mari is more determined than ever to not let any more of her youth go to waste. Still, her fear continues to prevent her from taking that ambitious step forward—that is, until she has a chance encounter with a girl who has grand dreams of her own.

Spurred by her mother's disappearance, Shirase Kobuchizawa has been working hard to fund her trip to Antarctica. Despite facing doubt and ridicule from virtually everyone, Shirase is determined to embark on this expedition to search for her mother in a place further than the universe itself. Inspired by Shirase's resolve, Mari jumps at the chance to join her. Soon, their efforts attract the attention of the bubbly Hinata Miyake, who is eager to stand out, and Yuzuki Shiraishi, a polite girl from a high class background. Together, they set sail toward the frozen south.

A Place Further than the Universe helped me get over 5 years of depression.

I'll try to avoid spoilers. Long post heads up.

When I was 17 my father passed away. It wasn't a surprise, he became terminally ill right before I started high school. But it still destroyed me emotionally. I lost more friends than I made, I started sluffing, I just barely graduated. I had no plan, no direction in life. I fell into a job that I hated for 2 years, then quit for my current job that pays less but I hate less. I've just been drifting through life, letting the current take me wherever. I have made a few attempts at college, but could never finish a term. I've been stuck in a rut.

I went into A Place Further than the Universe mostly blind at the beginning of the season on the recommendation of u/G-0ff and Anime FMK. It immediately started to make me feel better. Kimari's desire to not waste her youth hit home with me wasting my life. And Shirase dealing with the grief of losing her mother was obviously relatable. The show showing the step by step of their journey inspired me to get off my butt and stop going with the flow. I started looking for jobs in fields I had never even considered before and I approached life with more optimism.

While episode 12 hit me like a ton of bricks and I cried for most of it, it did more to help me emotionally than 2 years of grief counseling ever did. I'm glad to say that I am happier than I have been in a long time and I have and interview next week for a job I looking forward to for the first time. I want to thank everyone at Madhouse for making a show that legitimately changed my life for the better. I can't recommend this show highly enough. It might be the most beautiful and important piece of media I have ever consumed. If you haven't watched this show I implore you to. It changed my life and I hope it can do the same for others struggling out there.

First of all, WOW!

Wasn't expecting these kind of emotions and characters, I'll be honest I came watching this show without checking out anything at first. I was expecting just another casual lighthearted moe show and so I was really surprised. The characters were really well written, every backstory was very relatable and felt realistic, which made the friendship they shared felt very satisfying to watch playing out.

In my opinion, the mailbox scene in episode 12 was the best emotional scene I've ever seen in anime. It just told so much about the relationship between Shirase and her mother without even saying a word. How Shirase still believed her mom was alive and sent her an email everyday, even though she knew deep down the truth she refused to believe, just shows how strongly she loved her mother. Additionally, the fact that her mom died at the blizzard while trying to retrieve her laptop, so she could email her daughter, just shows how much she loved her back, even though she wasn't around for her a lot.

I could probably go on and on about every backstory and how it was resolved by the end of the show, but I'd love to hear what you guys think!

Edit: I love what this thread has become, thanks for anyone who shared their opinion!

I'm not a person that recommends animes to others, cause it's very personal, but different from the other animes, I feel the obligation to do with A Place Further Than The Universe.

This is not an Anime serie, this is a masterpiece desguised as an Anime.

At first you may find too childish and boring, I mean, it's a bunch of kids travelling and dreaming, but the art and the soundtrack keeps your interest.

As the episodes go on, it gets better and better and better. It's an increasing improvement of the characters, their relationship/friendship, their wills, EVERYTHING gets better. The drama intensifies, and what was nothing on the 1st ep. becomes stronger and stronger, till the moment that will rip off A LOT of tears from your face. I've never cried so hard for an Anime or movie like this. And what makes it even greater, is that at the end, it will not make you feel sad or depressed, at least for me. The only sadness was to see the show ends.

I just felt like I had to say something about this anime that is not much talked on the communities.

I've laughed, cried, got sad, happy... and grateful for watching such a masterpiece.

My only regret is not having watched it before.

If you like slice of life, comedy and drama, this is a must watch, or even if you don't, please, give it a try, it'll teach you some good things for the rest of your life.

Edit: small edits for gramma.

I watched A Place Further than the Universe with my grandma.

Let me start by saying I fell in love with this series when it came out. It's not just an anime series to me. It's a reminder of why I fell in love with this medium in the first place.

Now me and my grandma are very close. Of all my family members, I'd say she holds the place closest to my heart. I visit her every weekend since those are my only days off work. Anyways, a few weeks ago, I decided to take a risk and show her this series. I'd show her one episode each on Saturday and Sunday then do the same thing the following weekend, so on and so forth. The reason I say I took a risk is because she doesn't like subtitles. But I convinced her that this was worth it and so she agreed to watch it with me. She has fell in love with it since day one. She's the type of woman who doesn't talk about things if she doesn't care about them. But when it comes to this show, she talks about it every time I go over.

I think this is a perfect example of why this is (in my opinion of course) one of, if not THE best series that anime has to offer. Just about anyone can relate to it. So many people in this day and age, myself included, aren't doing enough with our lives. We're not really living. But this series has taught me and so many others that this does NOT have to be the case. So to those people who feel like their life is going nowhere or that they're not getting enough out of it, I have two requests for you. First, watch this series, you will not regret it. Secondly, go outside your comfort zone, do something or go somewhere you'd never thought you'd be able to. Pursue that dream that you didn't think was possible. I know I'm going to, are you?
