Why was Patricia Arquette let go from playing Kristen in A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master?

For years, I assumed Patricia Arquette chose not to come back when she became more mainstream, yet in an interview, she said she wasn't asked back and was surprised Kristen got recast with Tuesday Knight.

I liked Tuesday Knight's take as Kristen, however Patricia Arquette was the OG and I wish she had come back. Why did the producers pass on taking Arquette back? Did she ask for more money and they left her hanging?

I prefer "A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: Dream Master" over "Dream Warriors"

Dream Warriors is widely praised as the best film since 1, but imo I think it's overrated and at times can be boring.

None of the new characters in 3 are likable like Nancy and her friends in 1.

I also prefer Alice as the final girl than Kristen. Patricia Arquette was not a good actress in this film, her screaming was bad on my ears. Sounded like a cat.

And I find the whole Dream Warriors thing goofy. Alice in general is just a more interesting final girl than Kristen.

Regardless of what you think of A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, it does have an amazing and ridiculous getting ready for battle montage.

Rewatching A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master
false

I put Elm Street 4 on my list of movies to watch this month because it turned 30 this year. For years I remembered it as being inferior to Dream Warriors, so I don't watch it nearly as often. However, I'm really enjoying it.

-I forgot that the movie shows Kincaid in the "real world" as he's dying, and his dog is barking as he's looking up. I thought it made his demise more disturbing than it would have been otherwise with that scene in there. Same goes for Kristen's body burning in bed and Sheila dying in the middle of class.

-This movie may have some of the best visuals of any of the Elm Streets, even if it isn't the best overall. The whole planet as the junkyard in the beginning, the waterbed sequence, the quicksand and then being up on the ceiling, Alice getting sucked into the movie screen, the cockroach transformation, and Freddy getting pulled apart by the souls. Elm Street 4 really takes advantage of the nightmare concept. I guess they must have been given a really good budget as the films continued to be successful.

-Alice has a great character arc. She goes from the meek girl who covers up her mirror because she has self esteem issues, to being a badass that can take down Freddy.

-I thought having a teenage brother and sister with Alice and Rick was a nice touch. I liked that scene where Rick tries to teach Alice a martial arts move. A sibling relationship is something that isn't seen all that much in these movies.

While Dream Warriors is still my favorite Elm Street movie, I'm starting to think that Dream Master is a lot better than it is sometimes given credit for.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 4 is AWESOME!!!

I'm watching the franchise in order and now that I just finished watching this one, I'm trying to understand why TF is this movie considered bad and skippable???

This was easily the most fun horror movie I've ever seen and my 2nd favorite Nightmare movie after the original. The practical effects are insane, the nightmare sequences and deaths are amazing and creative as hell, the soundtrack is DOPE and I loved the atmosphere/vibe of the movie! I even found the characters likeable, not as much as part 3, but I liked them.

The only negatives I can think of are the dream warriors getting killed off too soon and Freddy being revived with dog pee and killed with his reflection. And I can't even get too mad at the warriors dying since their deaths were fking awesome! The pee and mirror stuff were funny af and totally fit this movie for me, it's just a fun, campy slasher movie, which is exactly what I was expecting and exactly what I got.

Welcome back to our weekly slasher horror movie discussion. I know. Last week we continued the Nightmare on Elm Street Series with the A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors discussion. This time we discuss our the fourth entry in the Nightmare on Elm Street Series… A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988)

Movie Poster

Trailer

IMDB

IMDB Rating: 5.7

Rotten Tomato Score: 56%

Director: Renny Harlin

Cast:

Robert Englund - Freddy Krueger

Lisa Wilcox - Alice Johnson

Danny Hassel - Dan Jordan

Brooke Theiss - Debbie Stevens

Andras Jones - Rick Johnson

Tuesday Knight - Kristen Parker

Toy Newkirk - Sheila Kopecky

Rodney Eastman - Joey Peterson

Ken Sagoes - Roland Kincaid

Synopsis: Freddy Krueger returns once again to terrorize the dreams of the remaining Dream Warriors, as well as those of a young woman who may know the way to defeat him for good.

Running time: 99 Minutes

Trivia (Provided by IMDB and Never Sleep Again Documentary): Patricia Arquette, who played Kristen in the third part of the series, could not reprise her role here in the fourth movie because she was pregnant during filming. This is hugely speculated of being false and it's believed that her as well as her agent wanted more money.

The name of the diner where Alice works is called the "Crave Inn", a reference to series creator Wes Craven.

Kincade's dog is named Jason, a possible nod to the Friday the 13th slasher films where the slasher's name is Jason Voorhees. What makes this rather interesting is in this movie Jason (the dog) brings Freddy back to life where in Freddy vs. Jason (2003), Freddy brings Jason back to life.

Wes Craven turned down New Line's offer to direct and re-write their script.

Joey's weakness was always beautiful, attractive women and caused him to be put in a coma in the third film and his death in fourth film.

Bonus Question 1: What were your thoughts when they saw this for the first time?

Bonus Question 2: Did you wish they stayed with more a comedic Freddy, or do you think it's better he returned to a more typical horror character.
