Agricola or A Feast for Odin?

Hello, I am really interested in both Agricola and A Feast for Odin and completely unsure of which one to buy. I would probably be playing it mostly with 2 players. People who own/have played both which one do you prefer? They both sound so good haha!!

Also just as a side question, what is your favorite Uwe Rosenburg game?

A Feast for Odin: what are you supposed to do in the game, actually?

I've played A Feast for Odin a total of nine times between April 2019 and January 2022, with Norwegians used from the start. In that time, my top score in any game was 102 points, with just an 89 point average. The highest score in a game I've been present in was 179 by a competent player. (Not my usual group. In my usual group, I've once won with 100 points, and the highest score there was 126.)

We're about to play it again tomorrow, and I'm about to go into the game with the strategic understanding of a first timer—for the 10th time.

I'm far from a high-level player in general (I think I top out at mid-high level in my very best games) but AFFO is uniquely frustrating in that I haven't been able to determine how it's supposed to be played AT ALL. It's just somehow incompatible with how I think about games. I know there are multiple overarching strategies, but I can't perform any of them. I can't get anything to combo, or any significant efficiencies to trigger.

I've played it three times solo, scoring 77, 64 and 77 points, respectively. (These aren't even included in the 89 point average.) Even if I removed the blocking solo opponent from the game, being able to do everything I want freely at all times, I probably couldn't reach more than ~115 points with my current understanding of the game.

I'm not asking for a strategy guide as such. I don't read those; consider it a personality quirk if you want, but I don't want to give myself an unfair advantage against the other players I play against (who also don't read them). So for example, I don't need to know about good opening moves, i.e. what to do for each strategy on turns 1-4.

The only reason I'm asking this is to overcome the specific handicap I have. I'd welcome a high level overview of the different viable strategies in the game and what actions they mostly involve, and just general do's and don'ts. I'm also complete ass at filling in the player board + island tile grids, so advice on how they should be generally approached would be welcome.

Gaia project or A Feast for Odin?

I got agricola, spirit island and gloomhaven.

I mainly play solo, sometimes 2 player.

What do you recommend?

Im thinking AFFO is a bit similar to agricola in a sense of cards, art and playstyle so maybe GP?

Is GP worth for solo?

A Feast for Odin is blowing my mind

It's a bit sandboxy, like Fields of Arle, but the Occupation cards give you a bit of focus, as does the deal of the weapons cards.

It has tons of options, but this time around the options are interesting. I want to go back and play. And play. And play. Going whaling or pillaging, etc., and the option of exploring new lands gives the game an adventure feeling as well.

After two solo plays, I'm giving it a 10 out of 10, and highly recommend this game. Uwe Rosenberg fans should love it, but non-fans might like it too, because the resource conversion has been turned into puzzle pieces, which makes the game feel very different than a game like Le Havre or Ora et Labora.

What do you all think?

First game of A Feast For Odin

Hi folks!

Yesterday I have played solo my first game of A Feast For Odin, and had a blast! It was way more relaxing than I thought, despite the number of possibilities.

I didn't overthink it, played lightly and got a score of 89. Way more than expected for my first game.

I am afraid that I could have missed a rule or misplayed something (I only counted the last income once). The picture is the final state of the board, can you pick some errors?

Can wait to dive into it again!

What a lovely viking village

My 3D-printed insert for "A Feast For Odin" with "The Norwegians" expansion.

Here is an imgur album so you can see the pictures in nice detail!

You can download the files on printables, or thingiverse.

It has a large amount of improvements over the previous inserts, mainly to allow the storage to also work as trays during gameplay more effectively, and to make it quicker to setup/teardown.

If anybody has any questions, or has any requests for other games I should take a look at next, just let me know!

Right now my shortlist of games to update/create inserts for are:

  1. Mysterium -- almost done, just need to clean up the files a bit.

  2. Five Tribes with all expansions (no shake-proof vertical storage solutions out there right now)

  3. Brass: Birmingham (I updated the most popular insert on thingiverse, but haven't uploaded my revision yet)

Finally played A Feast for Odin, thank you BGA!

I had this game for a while now (bought the very first edition in 2016) , read the rulebooks so many times (because each time is so far away from the precedent that I forgot about them).

Every time I pull out the box, my group of players would protest saying it seems too complicated so I resolved to play it solo. But the maintenance always seems so heavy that I always thought I would never have the time to play a game. But then, I realised that BGA have the game and it can be played solo!

So I took my courage and read the rulebook once again and finally, I managed to play a solo game on BGA! I was not very good (I got 46 points) and I made some mistakes but overall I really loved the game and I can't wait to play it again!

What are your best strategies playing the game? Do you sometimes play it wit multiple players? I will definitely play it solo again but now that I know the basics, I am willing to play it with other players although I am afraid it would take too long.

Z-Man rigged our copy of A Feast For Odin

We were playing AFFO (second time ever) today and during round 5/7 my wife noticed that I had one extra Viking meeple than her. We thought she must have lost one, but it turns out that our game came with 13 red meeples instead of 12 like the rest of the colors. So I played most of the game with a major advantage of one extra viking.

Pro-tip: always choose red in Z-man games. Thanks for the solid, guys! /s

Joking aside, AFFO is a stellar game and production. A rare 10/10 in my book.

Today is my birthday and my wife/kids got me The Norwegians expansion for A Feast For Odin. After sorting and getting everything back in the main box I threw both up on the shelf, sat back in my chair, and looking up noticed that the artwork on the sides of the boxes perfectly continues across one another. I'm sure there are other expansions that do the same but this was truly a pleasant surprise.

A Feast for Odin... but, for beginners.

I really want to buy a Feast for Odin, However, it's a genre that I've never played before. Should I commit, or is there a smaller game I should experience first to test out if I enjoy this genre first?

EDIT: Order Placed :P

Help me choose between A Feast for Odin and Brass Birmingham.

Local store has both in stock. Both have been on my radar for a while. I do already have some worker placement games and patchwork but AFFO looks like a fun marriage of the concepts. The fact that it is single player as well is a plus.

I don’t have anything I could compare to Brass in my collection right now. The theme is great and I feel like I would really enjoy it, my wife maybe not as much.

It looks like either way I’ll have some studying to do as far as rulebooks.

I’m thinking I would like the depth of Brass more but it wouldn’t get on the table as much as AFFO.

EDIT: I bought Brass Birmingham. Can’t wait to try it!

A feast for Odin

I will be getting A Feast For Odin this week and probably playing it next week end.

This games looks massive. The rules dont scare me at all and we are used to playing heavy games. I was wondering if there was anything people tend to forget while playing or any rules that are often forgotten during play.

There are plenty of rules overview and videos ; anyone better than others ?

Thanks a lot !
