Animal rights

Yesterday, we held a demonstration in our city. A couple of hundreds participants. All vegan messaging about animal liberation, no mention of health or environment.

No major incident happened, but our action drew lots of hate towards us. We had a huge screen on a van displaying graphic footage. Lots of people liked to take photos of themselves saying "tasty!" or posing as eating a hamburger. Others booed at us. Most made fun of us. A group of teenagers spat right in front of us. A young man came peacefully to me and then almost ripped apart the silicon cow head I was holding on top of a stick.

In general, the hostility was unheard of. I've been to other demonstrations for different causes and I've never felt this hatred towards the protesters. As you can imagine, virtually all of those people shared the same profile. All men. Actually, groups of men, and all of them tourists.

That said, there were positive outcomes too. Some people applauded or were shocked at the screen (as if it were the first time they saw this). All in all, the hostile environment only made me want to fight for this more.

Edit: thank you for your support messages :-) I only participated by painting around a dozen signs, so I barely deserve any praise for organizing it.

Does anyone know of some bands with lyrics that feature themes like animal liberation and environmentalism? I feel like this is a topic that's often overlooked in leftist circles in general and I want to listen to some bands who tackle this stuff.

I recently read Peter Singers book “animal liberation now” because I have been thinking about veganism for a while because of what I see as the immorality of factory farming. I just don’t understand how people can look at the different situations of animals he talks about in that book and still support the industry without making a extremely philosophically controversial claim such as “animals can’t feel pain.” Interested to hear your guys’ perspectives

This is super random and nerdy but I have to tell people and you guys are the only ones who will understand lol I'm watching Rise of the Planet of the Apes and as the apes are tearing ass through San Francisco and freeing all of the other apes all I can hear in my head is Dan screaming "This is animal liberation!!" I was going to read Animal Liberation but then I realized there was a new edition that came out earlier this year called Animal Liberation Now that has a lot of updates. I only want to read one (at least for now) and I'm not sure which one I should read. I think I am more interested in the moral and ethical arguments so which one do you guys I should read?

I had a conversation with someone, and I didn't know this was such a heated issue. Turns out, there's this idea that zoos are bad for wild animals that I wasn't aware of.

It's kind of dumb to say that zoos harm animals when they do the exact opposite: shield from the horrors of the world that no one can deny (poaching, habitat erasure, extinction, etc.) and the benefits of being on the same campus as zoologists and exotic veterinarians.

People seem to have a lot of misconceptions that come with being spoon-fed misinformation from vegan outlets: things like "muh animal care" when zoos literally care for animals, or "muh freedom" when I couldn't hear a single argument that convinced me that this was a relevant issue (my question that remains unanswered is what would an animal in the wild do that's different from what an animal in a zoo does, save for the constant running from death and disease.

I'd like to hear some views on this... I don't know if this is just typical "instagram crap," but the comments were so full of people that thought that zoos were pure evil that I thought I had to post it on here.

Edit 2: I'm seeing a lot of comments about "bad zoos," and I totally agree! I think those zoos should change or be burned or something. I'd like to steer this conversation toward good-faith zoos mostly because that's the majority in the West coast, or any zoo that affiliates with the AZA (which tend to be the most successful). I don't know if I'm moving the goalposts too much (i.e. if bad zoos existing is a valid argument to support the removal of zoos' influence and control over animals, please let me know!), but that's mostly where I'd like the discussion to take place.

For my dad´s 58th birthday I bought him Peter Singer´s masterpiece, he read the entire book in a week and went vegan right after. He has always been the scientific/academic type of person, and to me, this goes to show that some smart people just haven´t given the topic enough thought. I´m really proud of him and could not be happier.

Every year, billions of animals are tortured, enslaved, and killed. They always know what is coming, and are never complacent to the gun. There is a great new documentary I would recommend to anyone called *Dominion*, and its free on Youtube to watch.

I see no way to remove wage slavery, exploitation, and other capitalist symptoms from the lives of humans without rightfully removing exploitative systems from the lives of animals. Therefore, I see it as the obligation of every leftist, especially every antiwork anarchist, to live a vegan lifestyle and call for animal liberation.

Disclosure: Let's make it clear that animals are not the same as humans, nor are their lives as important as human lives. However, their suffering is unnecessary and unacceptable and they are our companions on the earth.
