More music like Alban Berg’s Violin Concerto?

Until recently, I really hated atonal music, and mostly considered it a soulless intellectual exercise lacking in musicality and human sentiment. But then I dug into the Berg concerto and realized how wrong I was. It’s gorgeous! Not just gorgeous by atonal standards, but really beautiful by any measure. I have read that Berg wrote the piece to synthesize 12 tons techniques with free atonality and tonal passages, and that the tone row is constructed with tonal patterns, so I imagine that’s why I find it so approachable. Can you recommend other pieces that are similar, so I can expand my pallet further?

I am curious about pieces that-
Combine atonal and tonal characteristics
Employ tone rows that are designed to produce harmonious sounds
Have clear and pleasant orchestration
Etc.

-EDIT- Not necessarily saying I’m only interested in recommendations with all of these characteristics, I’m just tossing out a few examples of things I think I might like. Other music in a similar vein but with different features would also be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Arnold Schönberg, born September 13th in 1874 in Vienna, Austria. Creator of new methods of musical composition involving atonality, namely serialism and the 12-tone row, among his most-significant pupils were Alban Berg and Anton Webern.

Questions & Concerns

Why tea?

Tea is a slang term for gossip/news/side comments. I've decided to name this series Opera Tea to encourage dirty nitty-gritty talk about the week's opera. Locker room Intermission talk, if you will.

What's next?

It's a secret!

Alban Berg appreciation post

One of my favorite songs written by Berg is “Schlafen, Schlafen” Op. 2 No. 1...here is the text translated in English:

To sleep, to sleep, nothing but to sleep! No awakening, no dream! Of those sorrows that I suffered, hardly the faintest recollection. So that I, when the fullness of life reverberates into my rest, I will only cover myself even more deeply, and more tightly close my eyes!

Please listen to the piece and comment. Berg is a transcendental composer of romantic and expressionist music and deserves recognition. Whatever recording you will listen to is sufficient. Write in the comments below your feelings on the Second Viennese School. Let’s talk about them!
