So my Alaskan Klee Kai died today unexpectedly in a freak accident.

First post in this community. Just wanted to share my story in case it helps prevent anyone else from what I went through.

My ex-wife and I live in separate houses and share custody of our 2 year old son and our dog Mika. He’s an Alaskan Klee Kai with brown eyes and was a few months shy of his 4th birthday.

I got a call at 11am at work from her sobbing and screaming down the line telling me that Mika was dead.

She had dropped our son at nursery at 830am after walking Mika, and then did some errands before returning to her house at 11am.

Usually we have a housekeeper/nanny who walks the dog in the morning before cleaning the house, so Mika was never usually alone. The breed is known for having separation anxiety, and he usually complained if he was left alone, so we always tried to minimise it. The housekeeper was on an extra day off because it was her birthday so Mika was alone.

Due to sheer bad luck, my ex had been eating upstairs in bed the night before and she had put an empty plastic vacuum pack of chicken cold cuts in her wastepaper bin in her room. The kind of bins that are open at the top. She just forgot to empty the bin and/or close her bedroom door.

Mika must’ve gone in to the bin and smelled the juices from the plastic bag and started licking it. When she came home she found him dead on the downstairs couch with his head inside the bag.

It appears he put his whole head inside and then somehow couldn’t get it off. He must’ve run around panicking and suffocating and come down the stairs onto the couch and then finally died. There was a urine stain on the couch but I don’t know if this was during or after the event.

I drive home already knowing what I was about to walk into, but when I saw him lying on the couch it was heartbreaking. His eyes were open and he just looked like he did when lay on his belly to get scritchies. His nose was cold and his tongue was out, but he still looked as beautiful as the day we brought him home.

I had already called the vet on my way home so they were expecting me. I had a cry in the bathroom and composed myself. I didn’t want him still to be in the couch when my son came home, and I didn’t see any point keeping him around any longer than I had to. He was gone.

We wrapped him in his favourite blanket and drove to the vets. They took us to a private room and let us say our goodbyes.

I just broke down and said “I’m sorry Mika” over and over. I scratched his chest just below his chin which was his favourite spot and just said goodbye buddy.

He will be cremated and I will scatter his ashes around his favourite dog park.

I had to pick up my toddler and act normal with him for the rest of the day, but now I have time to process what happened I’m just so sad. The thought of him being all alone and panicking and running out of air and then suffocating just makes me so upset. I had him from 10 weeks old and he was a little rascal who was loved by everyone who met him.

So many variable had to happen for this to occur, it was not anyone’s fault just extreme bad luck. My ex is blaming herself, but if any one of those things hadn’t happened, he would still be here, so I can’t blame her, and blame isn’t going to bring him back. He’s gone and it’s a black day in my life.

Thanks for letting me tell my story, I’ve included a picture of Mika to show you what a handsome boy he was.

Any red flags with this Alaskan Klee Kai breeder?

I've posted here about another breeder and you guys were super helpful in educating me as to why I shouldn't go with them! I've read the sidebar but I still want to get some advice on this one:

ICE (In Colorado Exclusively) Alaskan Klee Kai

https://alaskankleekaicoloradoice.com

They claim to do all the health testing they're supposed to be doing... Lots of shows and show titles. The only red flag I see is that they tend to have a LOT of puppies. Every couple of months, it seems like they have a litter.
