Desperate to escape his mind-numbing routine, uptown Manhattan office worker Paul Hackett (Griffin Dunne) ventures downtown for a hookup with a mystery woman (Rosanna Arquette). So begins the wildest night of his life, as bizarre occurrences—involving underground-art punks, a distressed waitress, a crazed Mister Softee truck driver, and a bagel-and-cream-cheese paperweight—pile up with anxiety-inducing relentlessness and thwart his attempts to get home. With this Kafkaesque cult classic, Martin Scorsese—abetted by Michael Ballhaus’s kinetic cinematography and scene-stealing supporting turns by Linda Fiorentino, Teri Garr, Catherine O’Hara, and John Heard—directed a darkly comic tale of mistaken identity, turning the desolate night world of 1980s SoHo into a bohemian wonderland of surreal menace.

It's darkly humorous and it's also kinda creepy and has a weird disturbed atmosphere. It is one of Martin Scorsese's best films. It has quite a cast for itself to, Rosanna Arquette, Cheech and Chong, Linda Fiornetino, Dick Miller, Catherine O'Hara, John Heard to name a few. It mostly takes place over one long night which starts out nice enough when he goes to meet a girl in a coffee shop. If you ever in the mood for something different give this one a watch sometime.

I watched "After Hours" (1985), by Martin Scorsese

Wow, what a ride. Things just kept coming and coming! I'll have to give it some time to settle in before I draw some concrete conclutions about the plot and such, but I felt it was perfectly paced, planned and shot. Scorsese is simply a genius. Griffin Dunne as Paul is also amazing, loved the performance! Absolutely recommend it.

What did you guys think about it?

SPOILERS: Saw this movie last night for the first time. I had no idea Cheech and Chong were in it. Also I loved the dark humor. I wonder if he stayed at work all day at the end? I mean he must of been exhausted as hell.

Movies like After Hours (1985)

A few years ago, I watched Martin Scorsese’s “After Hours” and totally fell in love with it. The strange characters, music and atmosphere totally immersed me. Everything about this film is bizarre, chaotic, and laughable while maintaining a sinister and unnerving vibe. The entire movie is surreal and absurd, but it’s simultaneously charming. No way am I the first person to mention this movie on here, but I have yet to find another movie like this. If anyone knows something with this vibe, please let me know!!

The relationship of Scorsese's 'After Hours' To 'Eyes Wide Shut'

Has anyone ever connected Eyes Wide Shut to After Hours?

The most obvious connection is that if you watch After Hours then it becomes obvious why Kubrick included the 'this pot is making you aggressive' line. There are many more connections: waltz dancing, Alice not knowing if she was dreaming an orgy or really experiencing it is similar to Roseanna Arquette's character sleeping through a five hour rape, After Hours uses the streets of Soho as a labyrinth just as Kubrick uses Greenwich Village. Generally Griffin Dunne's character's journey through the night is structured very similarly to Bill's series of meetings.

It also uses many of the same motifs. The Wizard of Oz features in After Hours, rainbows appear throughout the film, there are lots of mirror shots of the main character Paul just as there are of Alice, there is a naval character and I have picked up some masonic imagery but i'm sure there is more. Paul is eventually redeemed by a female character wearing a mother of pearl ring (and ear rings) just as we see Mandy wearing a mother of pearl ring that links to the redemption scene as explained by u/33DOEyesWideShut.

Kubrick used Tribes and the D.I as visual sources for Full Metal Jacket and earlier used the Japanese film Funeral Parade Of Roses to create Clockwork Orange. I'd be interested to hear from anyone who thinks he may have used After Hours in the same way.

I have more thoughts on this but that can wait.
