Life in Addis Ababa

Genuinely curious here what life is like in Addis Ababa for the average citizen . I have a friend who works in the city, but commutes 45 minutes to work from the outskirts, and the things he has told me about his life are heartbreaking. I am unsure if his experiences are representative of the typical life experience there or if he just has really bad luck. He had his clothes stolen off the clothesline in his backyard a few months back, his new cell phone stolen from him while he was walking home from work (they only took his cell phone, and then choked him until he passed out, leaving him on the ground,), and he is on his third job this year, working as an accountant. He gets paid $50 USD a month, because the company is in financial trouble, otherwise his salary would have been $100 USD a month. His electricity goes out quite often at his home, and overall, he has it quite hard. Is this the typical experience of the average citizen in this area , being surrounded by crime, lack of predictability with electricity, and poor paying jobs? He tried to get a visa to study in the US, but was denied. He is trying to better his life, but it seems like he can’t catch a break.

Addis Ababa LRT troubles

https://thediplomat.com/2023/02/china-and-ethiopia-the-addis-light-train-stuck-in-slow-motion/

The Addis Ababa Light Rail Train (AALRT), sub-Saharan Africa’s first inner-city tram project, was hailed as an exemplary infrastructure development in 2015 and a ground-breaking step forward for Africa-China relations. Today, it faces even more challenges than the ones we noted in 2018, when we first took a ride.

Also covered by Bloomberg Businessweek and locally by The Reporter, but The Diplomat has more thorough coverage.

Hadn't seen any recent posts about it.

16-hour Layover in Addis Ababa with Ethiopian airlines

Hey everyone, could really use your advice!

My parents (both citizens of Pakistan) will be flying from Pakistan to Canada this December, with multiple layovers, including a 16-hour layover in Addis Ababa (ADD). Does anyone have any experince staying in or travelling through Addis Ababa? From what I understand, with a layover over 8 hours, the airline provides a complimentary package that includes a temporary visa, hotel accomodation near the airport and transportation from/to the airport and hotel.

Does anyone have any experience with a similar situation? Is it safe? How are the people/accomodations?

My parents are elderly and don't speak too much English so a little nervous for them! Would really appreciate your help!
