One of the first abstract photography attempts. Can you guess what it is?

Let's talk about abstract photography

I've recently become fasinated with abstract photography, whether it is purely abstract or simply making use of abstraction. I have some questions about it:

  1. What makes a "good" abstract photo? How do you actually convey that it is a composed image instead of just a snapshot of some random thing?

  2. Who are some of your favorite abstract photographers to follow?

  3. Do you find it difficult to judge the quality of abstract stuff you do? I feel this is more difficult to determine than in portrait or landscape work. But I may be wrong.

Let's talk about abstract photography

Abstract photography has never really been my thing. I guess I've felt that if there is no recognizable subject, I kind of feel that either the photographer is not really "showing" anything, or maybe I'm just too dumb to see it, and I don't like to be made to feel dumb :)

Anyway, I've lately started to develop a fondness for abstract shots where you can just barely, maybe, make out something "non-abstract" in the image. When I manage to find these types of compositions it feels really rewarding for some reason. Maybe more so than my usual genre which is nature and landscape photography...

Maybe it's just the thrill of shooting something that feels new to me, who knows :)

Here are a couple of examples of shots of mine that might show what I mean:

  • This one is of a christmas tree shot through a rainy window at night

  • This one is of the branches of a tree reflecting in a lake in a way that makes the branches look like a tree themselves.

What are your thoughts on abstract photography? Artsy and pretentious? Fun and worthwhile?

  • Abstraction is the distancing of an idea from objective referents. That means, in the visual arts, pulling a depiction away from any literal, representational reference points. You can also call abstract art non-representational art. members
