Hey Heather! Super glad to write you here.

Many questions to ask but starting with our beloved Gwenpool, if you had to choose and actress to portray her in the future (please Marvel make it happen), who would it be and why?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 18 points19 points  (1 child)

This is such a difficult question for me to answer as Gwen is so near and dear to my heart. Can we just pluck her out of the pages a plop her in real life to play herself? That makes sense to me!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A la Who Framed Roger Rabbit?. I'm in!

[–]Marvelite222 15 points16 points  (5 children)

Hi Heather, are there any plans for an Omnibus for Gwenpool?

[–]s7sost 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This, please. It's such a long run that I don't think it's practical to collect as short TPs, specially when some aren't available or pricier than others for some reason. An Omnibus is the way to go!

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 9 points10 points  (3 children)

Nothing has been announced as far as I'm aware.

[–]ChappieBeGangstaDr. Doom 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Tell them I will buy one. So its worth at least printing one.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Make that two.

[–]monyarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make that 4, i'm gonna buy 2.

[–]HDI-X13Spider-Man 11 points12 points  (5 children)

Hi Heather! My question is of the stupid variety. What does an editor do?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 23 points24 points  (4 children)

In a nutshell, the editor's job is to create the very best book possible given the circumstances they are working with.

Breaking it down further, this involves everything from coming up with ideas for books, casting creators, working with writers on pitches & scripts, giving notes to artists on layouts, pencils, inks, colors, and covers, working with the letterer on placements, style, etc, working with the bullpen on production design like trade dress, recap pages, and other design pages, and more, and more, and more!

Multiply that by 10-15 books a month, add in a lot of coffee, some responsibilities regarding making sure solicit copy and covers are in for previews, chasing down creators to make sure deadlines are hit, and sprinkle some stress on top, and you've got a comic book editor!

[–]HDI-X13Spider-Man 15 points16 points  (3 children)

Wow! I had no idea you had so many responsibilities. Good luck at your new gig and thanks for doing the AMA!

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Thank YOU!

[–]cabaljz 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Piggybacking on the original question. How does one get into comic book editing? Also loved Gwenpool

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same really as breaking into any industry--having the skills and experience necessary for the job, networking, and a little bit of luck on timing.

For myself, by the time I realized that what I really wanted to do in comics was edit and not purely be a creator, I was already out of college and therefore couldn't land an internship at a publisher. So I began networking via social media and conventions and meeting as many editors as would sit down and talk with me about their jobs to get a sense of what they would be looking for when hiring. At that point I began putting together my own comic anthology called UNLAWFUL GOOD as a portfolio piece. For me, it was sort of like making my own internship. I edited submissions, paired creators together, edited their stories, made a final product, and marketed and funded the book successfully through Kickstarter and comic cons. I now had something I could show to those hiring editors I had met before, "I DID this."

Is the anthology perfect? Absolutely not. But it showed I had the drive and initiative to work in this industry, as well as could put together a team and put out a successful product. All skills that an editor needs.

[–]2th 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Good morning Heather! Thanks for being here.

So can you walk us through the pitch for Gwenpool? Like how it went from Secret Wars variant to actual series.

Also, thank you for working on that book and Renew Your Vows. Both are two of my favorite pulls in ages. I was super sad to see Gwen canceled. She deserves more!

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 15 points16 points  (2 children)

It's really quite ridiculous when you think about it. When the Gwen Stacey/Deadpool mash-up variant came out summer 2015 we never could have anticipated the image going viral. Almost immediately we were flooded with images of cosplayers and fan art. Right away the sales team asked if we could come up with something to lean into the obsession. And thus, Gwenpool was born!

[–]2th 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Anything for money eh? I feel like Gwen would totally appreciate that idea in universe. Anyways, thanks for your work. I really did enjoy Gwenpool, and she is easily in my top 10 of comics because it was fun, it was meta, it was well written, it was well drawn, and did I mention that it was fun? I anxiously await her return!

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As do I! Thanks for your support!

[–]ShyGuyWi-Fi 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Hi Heather! First let me say that Gwenpool is, without a doubt, the best series I've ever read and I want to thank you for your hard work on the series. My questions are: 1. Is there an in universe explanation for the alternate universe Gwens like Gwenompool or 'Deadpool kills the Marvel universe again' Gwen? 2. If you could choose one other hero for Gwen to team up with in a 'Marvel two-in-one' or 'Spider-man/Deadpool' style book, who would it be?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

  1. Easy! Comic book magic! We even saw a bunch of alternate Gwen's in HER book. Though, I would love to see her thoughts on how the science of it all works...

  2. Ooooh this is a toughie. I would love to see her team up with Howard again. I thought they made a great pair. Also Punisher or Wolverine--one of the darker, grittier characters. I think they would balance each other well. That is, if they don't kill one another first...

[–]GTOmar 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I’d love to see a team up book featuring Gwenpool, Deadpool, and the two Hawkeyes. They just barely grew chummy with one insane destructive -pool. I’d love to see how they’d handle him and Gwen’s unique wavelength of weird.

MyQuestiontho: Do you think Gwenpool could work as an animated series or would some of her particular comic breaking abilities not translate well?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think Gwen in an animated series would be tricky. In comics her ability works well because comics have "gutter space" that she can hop out into because as a reader she knows it exists. If she was in an animated show, it's not like she would actually be able to hop out of the television or venture into the commercials, you know? Gwen works well the way she does BECAUSE of the comics medium.

[–]Turinggirl 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Gwenpool was the first comic in almost 20 years I actually purchased. I loved its direction and it’s story. I guess my question is when you first started working on Gwenpool did you know it was something special from the beginning or was it a slow realization?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I knew Gwenpool was different from the very beginning. I don't think any of us really knew quite what she was capable of becoming right away, but I knew we were in for a wild ride from issue #2 when she shouted, "JANE" at Thor!

[–]SpindlySpider 10 points11 points  (1 child)

As editor, do you know of any future plans for our best girl Gwen? New plotlines or at least a hardcover omnibus in the works?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

All I'm at liberty to say is that there definitely was no discussion about NOT doing any of those things... ;)

[–]s7sost 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I don't have a specific question, but with the whole Gwenpool thing ending and the amount of recent cancellations (some unfair, others understandable), I was wondering: how liable is Marvel editorial to listen to fan petitions to restart runs? I assume it's not possible for series that ended recently but other ones that didn't find their audience at the time and deserve a second chance?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I don't think a "fan petition" has ever resulted in a comic getting brought back, but I could be wrong. It ultimately always will come down to sales.

[–]s7sost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well there's that Joe Kelly petition to continue his Deadpool run, which was pretty much the reason of my question, but that was almost two decades ago so probably it doesn't count.

[–]DeclanShalvey 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Who's your favourite Irish creator to work with.

BE HONEST!

:)

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Buffy the cat, obviously.

[–]GalaxyGuardian 12 points13 points  (1 child)

First of all, I just want to say that Gwenpool is one of my favorite comics ever.

How difficult/stressful/fun was it to keep track of everything in that book?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You know what they say, "If you enjoy what you do, you never work a day in your life."

Honestly, Gwenpool was one of the smoothest comic projects I've ever worked on. Everyone on the team--from editorial down to production--just clicked. Even the main artist team of Gurihiru, both of whom do not speak English and had to be communicated with through a translator, never seemed to have an issue. Working on Gwenpool was a dream project in every way, shape, and form.

[–]Xgreenmanx 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Hi, I wanna say I’ve love Doctor Aphra, she’s been a great addition to the Star Wars universe. Will we ever see Doctor Aphra in any animated shows or movies in the Star Wars franchise?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I hope so! Unfortunately that's not up to me to decide. But the fact that we get her as a Hasbro Action Figure later this year is a good first step, I think!

[–]bigdogeatsmyass 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Please God, is there a way you can get Gwenpool into a team book? They have to have another New Warriors reboot planned, right?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I would die if she was in GREAT LAKE AVENGERS, personally. That's what I'm rooting for!

[–]2th 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Her, Big Bertha, and Squirrel Girl going shopping and then having to fight stuff like the first episode of Xmen the Animated Series. GIVE IT TO ME NOW!

[–]QuantumAwesome 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Gwenpool was my favorite Marvel comic series of the last year. The writing and artwork were all always amazing! What was the process like for putting together the creative team behind it?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Jordan had worked previously with writer Chris Hastings on a Deadpool Annual and I was a huge fan of Chris's DR. MCNINJA comic. Who better to come up with a unique story for a mash-up character like Gwenpool than someone who coaches improv?

It was Chris who first pitched Gurihiru, I believe. At the time we had been working with Danilo Beyruth on the Howard the Duck back-ups where Gwen first appeared, but he got snatched up for a mini series elsewhere. Lucky for us, it all worked out as I can't imagine a better fit for Gwen than the ladies of Gurihiru!

[–]T-Rex_Is_bestDevil Dinosaur 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Just wanna say thank you to you and the Gwenpool team for really kick starting my love for Marvel comics and encouraging to push my creative endeavors even more and I'm eternally grateful for that!

As for a question, is Gwen a dog person, cat person, or both?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gwen is a Pig-Gwen person ;)

Or a penguin person...

Or a shark person...

[–]Realshow 4 points5 points  (8 children)

If Gwenpool got her own show, which would you prefer it be, an episodic cartoon or a story driven action show?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 5 points6 points  (5 children)

Why not both?

[–]Realshow 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Anything you’d like to see happen in either?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Well, for starters I'd love for either of them to actually happen!

And for Gwen to befriend a real penguin...

[–]Realshow 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Perhaps the plot is for her to convince the animators to make one.

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Hmmm...I can see it happen now.

SCENE ONE - Int. Studio

GWENPOOL pops out of the animator's monitor...

[–]Realshow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ain’t she a stinker?

[–]blackbutterfree 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Wasn’t the original Teen Titans like that? A mix of stand alone episodes, story driven episodes, goofy one shots, all tied together with action? I’d take that for Gwenpool.

[–]Realshow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that could work. Actually working on a few fan fictions in that style too.

[–]Valamist 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Hi Heather! Just want to say thank for everything about Gwenpool. I loved the idea of the character the moment it was announced, but the book itself quickly became one of my all-time favourites. I was sad to see it cancelled, but it ended on such a strong, positive note. So yeah, thank you and everyone else involved in the book!

So, question... is there anything in Gwenpool that you all wanted to do but never got the chance? (I.E. character crossovers, story ideas etc)

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Oh definitely. Originally Gwen's storyline with her alternate future-evil self was supposed to go on much longer, we had plans to bring M.O.D.O.K. back, more with Teddy, etc, etc.

But this is comics. Books get cancelled all the time and come back with even crazier adventures! Who knows where Gwen's future lies?

[–]Valamist 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh cool! Thanks for replying Its a shame those ideas could not be explored more. Would love to have seen a bit more of M.O.D.O.K and his amazing m.o.h.a.w.k!

That being said, and I really do not mean this in any bad way, but I was surprised that the book made it to #25. Books I love have a habit to not last long, so I was really glad to see the book got more then a few arcs out! Your right, cancelling sucks, but Gwen now lives on in the MU and I have faith she will be back!

[–]Supreme_Leader_SmokeLeader 7 points8 points  (1 child)

  1. Was Marvel aware of the fanbase Gwenpool had? What were the biggest factors in choosing to end her series?

  2. With Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows still going, Marvel seems to at least be aware that fans like Peter and MJ being together. Is the plan to just keep that in this alternate reality or have there been discussions to move that over into the main universe?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

  1. I'm not really sure what you mean specifically by this question. I certainly was aware - hell, I like to say I am Gwen's biggest fan! But unfortunately no matter how dedicated a fanbase is, ultimately the biggest thing keeping comic book series alive is the dollars a book pulls in. Having that been said, the fact that a BRAND-NEW character like Gwen was able to sustain an on-going series as well as a couple of specials for TWO YEARS is absolutely UNHEARD of in this climate. Established characters that have been around for decades have trouble doing that. So the fact that she "only" got 25 issues is, in fact, extremely impressive.

  2. I can't really speak to what the larger plans are for either character, unfortunately. That's handled by a different editorial office!

[–]OjamaKnightGhost Rider 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I follow you on Twitter. It was really sweet seeing you advertise comics, mourn Gwenpool and Hawkeye, and do that Q&A. I love the passion you have for comics.

What I'm wondering is, what are all the comics on your pull list right now? What upcoming comics are you most excited for?

Good luck with the EiC job!

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you--I love comics dearly and though I work in the industry professionally, deep down I'm just as much of a fan as anyone else.

Outside of Marvel & DC, which I read just about everything published at both companies, my favorite books are Lazarus, Paper Girls, Descender, Archie, Black Magick, Harrow County, Redneck, Saga, The Wicked & Divine

[–]WadePool 2 points3 points  (3 children)

While I love Gwenpool, have a question about the Merc himself. What do you think of Deadpool's latest direction? As somebody who has been reading his redemption arc since Joe Kelly, I'm not too happy. So much character development and I hope that isn't thrown away. The last issue gave me a bit of hope, but hope DP isn't going to be Despicable, long-term.

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Personally I adore everything Gerry has done on his run with Deadpool. Trust him and know that Wade's story is in good hands. I teared up reading the script for #300.

[–]WadePool 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Agrred, Gerry has been my favorite since Kelly. Great supporting cast, perfect balance of humor and tragedy. Was just worried editorial had him have Wade go in that direction, but if he is still the one that is steering the storyline. Now you have me impatient for #300 :). Thanks for answering.

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. It's been Gerry's plan all along :)

[–]M3wThr33 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I've been reading Poe Dameron since it started, and I've been captivated by Terex's entire storyline. Was he planned to have stuck around over so many issues?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think he was ever NOT planned to stick around. When Charles first created him Jordan and I LOVED the villain. Lucasfilm seemed to dig him as well, so when the fan response was as great as it has been, we absolutely leaned into it.

I can't wait to see him pop up elsewhere!

[–]CuervoKaldwin 2 points3 points  (2 children)

What did you think of Gwenpool's appearances in other books, like in the Champions book?

And was there ever a Spider-Gwen/Gwenpool team up planned before Gwenpool ended?

Also, thank you and the rest of the team for such an amazing book, i love Gwenpool!

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Nothing concrete was ever planned for the Gwens. But we knew we needed to at least get a cameo in GWENPOOL #25!

[–]Dondagora 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Hiya, fan of Gwenpool here~

Seeing as Gwenpool is now unemployed without a comicbook to call her own, do you think she can apply for a position with the Watchers? I mean, Uatu is dead, Fury is kinda an unwilling participant, and her powers of being able to go anywhere, know anything, and inability to change anything too significant in events makes her perfect for it.

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure the role of "Watcher" is something one can apply for...having that been said, she certainly has the skillset

[–]theymad3medoitMighty Thor 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Hi Heather! I'm a big fan of the books you worked on so thank you for your unique perspective and creative input on those!

I'm a huge Star Wars fan and love almost all the new SW Marvel books to varying degrees (Most especially DV Vol 2 and Doctor Aphra).

I will say, one of my biggest gripes, as well as what I see online and on reddit frequently, is the artwork in the current STAR WARS line by Salvador Larroca. It seems like every month becomes a guessing game of "which Star Wars scene did he trace these characters from" on multiple panels per book.

This is really frustrating as a reader and a SW fan because it always takes me out of the story, which I must add is actually terrific and I love Kieron's work. This only adds to my frustration because this should be one of the greatest books on stands, period, but the tracing and uncanny valley is so off putting to me, it's extremely distracting.

What I would like to know is (and understand if you can't comment) is this art-direction mandated by LF or Marvel Corporate? I have to feel like there must be some mandate coming from somewhere, considering how frequently this is complained about on Twitter and Reddit yet appears month after month. I've been really hesitant to ask about this because I don't want to offend anyone. Everyone works so hard to make a book happen that I don't wish to insult or hurt anyone's feelings, but it's gotten to the point where as much as it would pain me to do so I can't keep supporting the book if this continues with no end in sight.

Again, thanks for everything and good luck in the future!

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Thanks for being such a huge supporter of the Star Wars books! It's been nothing but a joy working on them.

I've gotten asked a lot of questions in regards to how certain books get cast over the years. And while I can't divulge specific details on every single title, there are a lot of factors that come into play when editors sit down and cast: who we think would be good, who we think would work well together, what the budget requirements are, what the schedule needs are, is there exclusive talent that need work that we need to consider, etc, etc, etc.

Sometimes you get a dream team that fits each of those requirements and everything works out perfectly. That's always the goal. And sometimes the alchemy that is making comics doesn't always produce gold.

But the big thing to keep in mind is comics are art. Art is subjective. Not everything is for everyone's taste. And that's okay! We now live in a world where there is something like 8 different Star Wars comics coming out every month. That's INCREDIBLE. If one isn't to your taste, surely there's at least one or more that is!

[–]theymad3medoitMighty Thor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, Heather!

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (3 children)

One Aphra related question now, who 3 years ago was introduced to the galaxy far far away! (Happy Birthday Aphra! We love you!) So the question is, in all your work for Aphra, what is the moment that you are most proud of working on?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Oh god, this feels impossible to pick a favorite moment. I don't know about "most proud", but definitely one of my favorite moments was her "death" in DARTH VADER #25.

We worked really hard not to announce the DOCTOR APHRA ongoing until after Kieron's run on DARTH VADER had ended. We couldn't spoil that she survives the series when her life was such a key plot point in his final arc. So when Vader "kills" her at the end of the issue, only to be revealed that she survives in a "post-credits" scene, I think we got a really great reaction from the fans!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree! She created a fool-proof master plan there, and that's another reason why she's awesome.

[–]RealJohnGillman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woul you be in the position of pitching an adaptation of the Darth Vader comic series for a more mature audience on Disney's new streaming service, and if the concept never occured to you before, could you consider it? Some of that stuff I would honestly be disappointed never to see in motion media, be it animation or live-action.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Last question from me, since I don't want to bombard you with too many.

My dream is to become an editor for Marvel. It feels kinda random to ask on Twitter but now that I have you here, What's the advice you would give to young Marvel fans who aspire to write Marvel stories tomorrow?

Lastly, thanks a ton for all the work you did, all the great stories you created and helped on. You're the best Heather! A truly example and inspiration. All the luck for the Unikrn's future! You deserve it ☺

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Well firstly, being an editor for Marvel and being a writer for Marvel are two entirely different things.

EDITOR - Obviously being a fan of Marvel comics helps, but it isn't necessarily a requirement. What's more important is having the skills necessary to communicate with writers and artists, lead a creative project from inception to publication, and do so coming out with a good product. Any story or character history that one might need to know one could just read and learn. What Marvel looks for when hiring Assistant Editors are people with these skills. Having a resume showing projects that you've initiated and led in a creative capacity is a HUGE plus.

WRITER: In order to write for Marvel the general rule of thumb is the writer has to have been published before in some capacity. This could even mean webcomics if the comic is well-done. The Editors hiring need to know what kind of content you can provide. Beyond that it's all about networking, timing, and of course, a little bit of luck. Some writers and artists I've hired purely from walking into a shop, picking up a book at random, LOVING said book, and then figuring out how to contact the creators.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By write I meant create. Sorry, I wrote the wrong word there. Although it's great to know both requirements. Thanks a ton again for the time and advice!

[–]Gamera85 2 points3 points  (6 children)

Hard to think up questions, since I have quite a few, but this is probably my only real chance to ask any of them so...

Was the idea behind Gwenpool's entry into the Marvel Universe that she had crossed over during the destruction and reconstruction of the Marvel Universe at the climax of Secret Wars in 2015? Because that was the impression I kept getting from everything hinted at in the pages. I only ask cause I'm curious, I haven't read the final issue yet as I'm kinda sad it still means the end, even if I've seen how positive and wonderful it is.

I just want to add, you being at Marvel was such a wonderful thing and you helped create so many great things with such taleted writers and artists. I wish it had gone smoother in other places, but you handled it all like a pro. I'm glad we had you around to shepherd a lot of this stuff. I hope you were never overworked or anything while you were there. If you were, the fact you still managed to be a kick ass editor is a testament to your abilities. You're awesome, Ms. Antos, never forget that.

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 5 points6 points  (5 children)

It's always been an explicit choice of the creative team to not reveal exactly how Gwen ended up in the Marvel universe. My lips are sealed!

And thank you so much for your kind words and support!

[–]Gamera85 2 points3 points  (4 children)

I understand, hopefully whoever picks her up next will keep that secret then, if only so we can make up our own. I stil prefer to think of my choice as the canon one, but that's cool.

I guess another question I have, if you can answer I mean, I'm aware of Gwen's small role in Secret Empire, where she was stuck on a talk show doing a propaganda appearance and stuff, but where was Gwen for the rest of Secret Empire? Did she help fight Hydra off-panel or head to Canada until it all blew over? Was that ever discussed at all in the creative group?

Also, while I approved of not derailing her story with tie-ins to events, were there ever any plans to include Gwen within any events? Or do her recently obtained powers limit her access because she could break things? Is that why she's nowhere to be seen in the current No Surrender event? I guess I'm ultimately just wondering what our beloved pink merc hero is doing during these massive crossovers. Is she staying low and keeping out of trouble like was implied in CW2's crossover with Rocket and Groot or is she taking an active but off screen role helping people?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Personally I like to think Gwen, knowing the way comics work, is keeping her hands out of the worldwide mess until she gets a better grasp on her abilities as well as her role in the Marvel Universe itself. As we've seen, she can only manipulate things so far before the comics gods revert her intentions back to their own.

[–]Gamera85 1 point2 points  (2 children)

A fair point, I'll keep that in mind for my own writing with her. I'm playing her in a forum RP. She has yet to get her powers in the story, but when she does it will get crazy. She also ran into Ezra Bridger when the group headed to the Star Wars Galaxy and she has a crush on him, although she doesn't want to admit she wants strings attached to the whole thing yet.

Thanks for all the answers, they're big help. Also, just to let you know, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper is my theme song for Gwen. It just says so much about her.

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That's a great song choice! My song choice for Gwen is "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" by Pat Benatar

[–]Gamera85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know, I saw your tweet for it. Been meaning to add it to my Gwenpool playlist for a bit now. So glad you took the time to talk to me and others, you're awsome.

[–]HistoryNerdi21 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hey Heather! Thanks for doing this.

How should indie creators with a lack of connections introduce themselves to Big 2 editors?

What do you like to see/what do you want to see in indie writers?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't be afraid to reach out to editors you want to work with. Part of an editors job is to find new and up-and-coming writers and artists. But it's important to be realistic about expectations--sending a tweet or email to an editor saying that you've got the next best pitch for Avengers and everything currently being published is crap isn't going to get your foot in the door.

If you can track down an editor's email address--great! If not, don't worry about it, there are other ways to make that connection. Most folks are on Twitter these days. And editors also make appearances at conventions doing reviews and panels. Reach out! Introduce yourself, and be honest!

"Hi, I'm insert name here. Could I give you a copy of my insert title of work here?"

And that's it! Be polite, be friendly, be engaging. A little social media research doesn't hurt either. Does the editor you want to work with really like true crime? Is that a way to strike up a conversation?

As for what editors want to see, it's really quite simple. A finished product. No editor will read a script for an unsolicited or creator-owned book. You need to be able to provide either a physical or digital copy of a finished product.

Thanks for the AMA. I always loved the narration boxes that told readers which comic book such-and-such even happened. Has that practice typically been optional or does Marvel not place that on high priority anymore?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These days it's typically a "user's choice" type situation. Some editors and writers prefer it, others don't.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Hi Heather.

How would one break into the comic book industry?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

By bursting through the comic book industry brick wall, Kool-aid man style!

Can you be more specific? In what role specifically?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Oh no, oh no.

Ooooh yeaaaah.

Ehm I'd love to be a writer.

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Copying an answer I gave an earlier question regarding this:

Don't be afraid to reach out to editors you want to work with. Part of an editors job is to find new and up-and-coming writers and artists. But it's important to be realistic about expectations--sending a tweet or email to an editor saying that you've got the next best pitch for Avengers and everything currently being published is crap isn't going to get your foot in the door.

If you can track down an editor's email address--great! If not, don't worry about it, there are other ways to make that connection. Most folks are on Twitter these days. And editors also make appearances at conventions doing reviews and panels. Reach out! Introduce yourself, and be honest!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's great. Thank you!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

What book do you really want to write?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Well, I'm an editor by trade, not a writer. Writing honestly has never really been anything I've ever been interested in pursuing as a career.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I see well let me revise my question is there a book you would love to edit in the future?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I adore the horror genre. At Marvel it was a dream of mine to take any of the MU characters into a horror story, but alas I never got the right opportunity.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Woah that would have been awesome! Hope someone gives you the chance because I would read it.

[–]chasexclamationpoint 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hey Heather! No questions here--only praise. (I've already picked your brain enough!)

Although I'm sad to see you leave Marvel, I'm happy to hear that you're still doing freelance work in the medium. Keep making awesome things and I'll keep reading 'em! =)

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the support!

And in the meantime, be sure to check out my first piece for Unikrn https://news.unikrn.com/article/video-Games-and-Violence-trump-meeting

[–]JeremyBiff 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What is your favorite fighting game series?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a kid I always enjoyed Soul Calibur, but now as an "adult" Super Smash Bros. Brawl is a lot of fun.

[–]evilesc 1 point2 points  (1 child)

There's a lot of talk about the Marvel editing team being overworked and understaffed. Now that you no longer work at Marvel, would you be able to shed any light on that, or would talking about it kinda be burning a bridge? I'm just curious, because 10-15 books seems like a lot for just one editor, and mathematically would suggest Marvel only has between eight and a dozen editors at any given time.

That aside, Gwenpool was great. Thank you for all your hard work on the book, and the same from my wife.

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

During my time at Marvel I'd say the editorial staff was averaging around 18-20 people

[–]killo31175 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Hiya, since you are the editor on doctor aphra you can help with a dispute I have with a friend: is she a lesbian or not? I thought she was but she says that she not and that she bisexual. Can you give me a definitive answer?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 8 points9 points  (4 children)

We know for a fact that Aphra has an interest in women, but I can't confirm or deny anything else. What is canon is what is published in the comics, books, movies, and television shows.

[–]killo31175 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Thanks for reply! regardless of her preference it is so cool to finally have a major lgbt character in the star wars universe that is not a side character or relegated to the books and actually has a big fan base.

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Agreed!

[–]killo31175 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Also, best of luck on your future endeavors.

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Was Gerry Conway and Ryan Stegman’s run on Renew Your Vows always supposed to end at issue 12? How did you handle the transition between creative teams? Was the jump in time your idea or Jody Houser’s?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Gerry Conway and Ryan Stegman's run was actually under a different editorial team. I was always a fan of the book, so when Marvel was shifting some editorial teams in house, I asked if I could take a stab at it.

When it was handed to me the plan was already set in motion for the time jump, so it was up to Jody Houser and I to try and come with a storyline that best made it work. Which is always fun when you have the pressure of looming deadlines and press announcements!

As for bringing on Jody herself, I had already worked with Jody on the ROGUE ONE Adaptation, as well as we had already started on the THRAWN adaptation. I adore working with her and I wanted the opportunity to develop a project with her outside of adapting STAR WARS material.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Cool, I just saw you were credited for the last few issues of Stegman’s tenure on RYV. Even with the creative shift, it’s easily one of my favorite books at Marvel right now!

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah - I worked with Darren on the last two issues as a sort of "transition" into the series.

Thanks so much for reading!

[–]DeltaTester 2 points3 points  (1 child)

What was the strangest creative challenge you had to wrangle in your Marvel work, and how did you resolve it?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it qualifies as "strangest" but definitely one of the most difficult challenges while working on DEADPOOL was the amount of issues we would be working on at once. Because the title double-shipped, Gerry was usually writing three different arcs at the same time, for three different artists to be fed. Which meant at one point I was working on issues #2, #6, #7, #11, all at the same time.

[–]LolPrimetime 2 points3 points  (3 children)

This isn't a question but I am SO GOING to miss your work on Gwenpool

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Then I suggest you start re-reading with #0! It's hard to miss it if you're constantly reading it :)

[–]LolPrimetime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely

[–]lumnezian 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I just wanted to say that I don't know you, but appreciated your direction at Marvel. You've come across as a beautiful person at every opportunity. You've done much to improve my perception of Marvel Comics as a gay man and minority. I'm sad to see you go, but wish you much luck in your new endeavors. Your new place of work is lucky to have you.

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you kindly for your support! I hope you keep reading!

[–]lumnezian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will. I'm reading more Marvel than ever, after years of being more of a DC fan. Oh, and thanks for keeping things FUN!! Best wishes.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Hello! How has #MakeMineMilkshake impacted you both professionally and creatively, if at all?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I try not to think about it, really. The incident that happened could have happened to any one of us in that photo--I just happened to be the account that posted it. My job has always been to help create the best comics possible and so that's where my focus lies. No internet activity will change that.

[–]AtomicNinja 4 points5 points  (1 child)

If invited, would you go on Ethan Van Sciver's YouTube show for an interview/chat?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ethan has spoken to me about making an appearance on the show before. However at the time it just didn't work out due to holiday deadline schedules and personal commitments.

[–]lurk4ever1970Squirrel-Girl 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What are you going to miss most about playing in the Marvel pond?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My love for the Marvel characters and stories I've worked on runs deep. I was so fortunate enough to be able to dip my toe in the two franchises I've loved the most for a couple of years--DEADPOOL and STAR WARS. I will miss both lines dearly, but I'm also excited to be able to go back to picking this titles up and enjoying them solely as a fan again.

[–]Thehalflingbarbarian 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hey, Heather. I love your work at Marvel and I’m sad to see you leave. Before you go, could you answer the two burning questions Gwenpool left me with?

One: Approximately how old is Gwen?

Two: Will Gwenompool ever get to live happily ever after with Matt Murdock?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One: I've always estimated that she was roughly around 17-19.

Two: Sounds like you have your own fan-fiction to write!

[–]vinniepdoa 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hi Heather! First of all, thanks for Gwenpool, she is truly something special.

I follow you on twitter and see that you like PUBG a lot, so since you're working more with esports and stuff now I'm just curious what other games you're into.

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My gaming obsession for the past year has definitely been PUBG--I even bought a new PC explicitly to play this game.

Current games I've been playing a ton of: Age of Empires II, FIFA, Fortnite, any and all Assassin's Creed, Monster Hunter, Sea of Thieves, and I'm excited to get my hands on Far Cry 5.

And Tetris. Can't forget about that one.

[–]Xgreenmanx 1 point2 points  (3 children)

If you were able to crossover a couple of characters from Marvel and Star Wars to go on adventures together what characters would they be? And would you put them in the Star Wars universe or the Marvel universe?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 10 points11 points  (2 children)

I invite you to check out my rejected pitch for the Marvel/Star Wars comic book crossover:

"The early days of the Death Star, the Empire sees a strange, chrome figure arrive on what appears to be a long board. He brings a warning…but it is too late! Appearing out of the abyss is Galactus! But what was to be his midday snack he soon learns to be, in fact, no moon at all…"

[–]tehawesomedragonLoki 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Is Marvel not interested in doing any crossovers with Star Wars or are they just waiting for the best story to tell? I would love to read that story as at least a one-shot.

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not that there is "no" interest at all, but it's not entirely up to Marvel. Like any other universe crossover (Star Trek & Green Lantern, Archie vs. Predator, etc, etc) both companies have to be in agreement with what the story will be, how it will be used, etc, etc.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

While Gwenpool is awesome, what are your thoughts on characters like Spider-Gwen? I personally love her. Has my favorite costume. Gwenpool is just awesome all around.

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Well, if it weren't for the success of Spider-Gwen, we would've never seen the "Gwen Stacey" Variant covers, and then we also would've never got Gwenpool.

So, with that logic, I love Spider-Gwen, ha!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Neat. Guess we have Spider-Gwen to thank then, eh? I just love her costume over all the other Spider-Men.

What was the inspiration for Gwenpool? Surely something spurred her creation.

[–]zzzPessimist 1 point2 points  (2 children)

  1. Is comics creator a well-paid job?
  2. Why there is no books action of which take place in other countries, like France, Spain, Italy, Russia?

[–]HeatherandToast[S] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

One - There's a popular saying among comics creators: No one makes comics for the money.

Though it is very possible to make a living and pay the bills solely as a comics creator, when your work is primarily freelance it's always wise to have multiple sources of income. And, like any other career track, the newer you are, the less you'll be paid.

Two - From time-to-time Marvel stories will travel to other countries. For instance, we did Deadpool 3.1 which was an adventure in Mexico. But primarily the Marvel characters are all from and live in New York City, which is why we see most of the content there.

[–]zzzPessimist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you.

Why in God's name should she regret posting a picture of her and coworkers on the internet? How is it in any way a person's fault that they be attacked for existing?

    [–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Victim-blaming at its finest. The lack of self-awareness in these people astounds me every day.

    [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Insomuch as she's a victim; seems like she (rightly) doesn't give a shit what these dork-ass losers think.

    [–]sir_joe_cool[M] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I want you all to know this user was banned for this completely idiotic and ignorant comment.

Having an unpopular opinion is fine, being critical of Marvel is fine, but going out of your way to be an asshole to someone who is incredibly generously taking time out of their day to engage with fans, is not only not okay to do in this sub; it's the kind of behavior that should warrant you taking a hard look at your life and the kind of person you are.

    [–]lumnezian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

    Concern troll.
