Got a burning question about Australia or Australian lifestyle and culture? This is the place to ask thousands of Australians!
Like many Australians I've been enjoying watching the FIFA Women's world cup recently on TV.
But it got me thinking, Australians clearly like to support women's sport. This World Cup has been breaking records for tickets sold and attendance, there's been sold out or near sold out stadiums of 80,000. People are talking about the games and the Matildas everywhere I go. Many of these players are basically household names.
Then there's other events, like the T20 Womens ICC world Cup which also broke records for attendance for female sport.
And yet... no one seems interested in AFLW. I've personally been to about 5 AFLW games and I always had a good time but the stadium felt like a zombie wasteland. It was just so empty. Even when the tickets were free entry there was never more than a small handful of people in the crowd.
Why is this? Too new of a sport? Not enough support/marketing by the AFL? The players haven't been able to hone their skills yet so they aren't as interesting to watch?
What if anything do you think can be done to increase interest in this sport?
