A Plague Tale: Innocence was amazing

It doesn't happen often that I get so immersed and sit through a game all the way, esp now that I am older. A Plague Tale did that to me. I spend a day and night playing it almost continuously, with my headphones on, fully immersed in the world and characters and story.

I started the game with English audio but shifted to French due to the setting, for full immersion, also because I could follow French a bit. The voice acting in French was so great. I loved how 14th century France was portrayed, the villages being close to how the preserved ones exists in present day France made it even more enjoyable. The medieval world was so well designed and well presented, with its gritty realities of disease, dirt, tribalism, religion, poverty etc. as well as its pristine beauty being far from an industrialized world. I think the same was there for the characters as well, since they are forced to move from an aristocratic background to streets and we get to play both parts. I checked up on the game development and saw Asobo mentioning Claude Lorrain's 16th century painting being the ambience they tried to visualize in this game, in the backdrop of black plague. Felt pretty well done. The soundtrack of the game jelled so well with it as well.

The ever present threat of the world was very well conveyed, it was surprising how it kept me on the edge esp when there is so little one can do as a character. Every chapter was so well crafted and they didn't feel repetitive or filler for me at any point including the dream sequence. The slow progress from unpreparedness of playable characters to how they find their stance through the violence felt very realistic. The ever present moral difficulty in encountering them again for survival was also there unlike the usual lets kill through this level feeling. The mostly single noted yet very dynamic background music aided to that as well.

To criticize, the game isn't the most realistic one. The cover mechanics felt silly at times, and there isn't much action if someone is looking for that. Though I enjoyed the story a lot, it went a bit bonkers by the end with rats which wasn't ideal, though I enjoyed it. The difficulty is a bit uneven, sections of game became more hard in final two chapters. The main boss was quite frustrating at times with all the rats making me move Amicia away from it and ruining all timing.

I like linear story driven games and this one had me covered fully. I also love when the game involves multiple main characters who are also offered as limited playable characters. This one was also laid back in terms of overall difficulty which made following the story easier. Mechanics of light/dark, rat etc. were pretty straight forward to make sense of without getting stuck in any point for long. It isn't much but having an extra chapter to wrap up things felt like a very nice touch. So these things were plus for me.

The only other recent game that kept me this emotionally invested and immersed was Hellblade. I now look forward to sequels of both.
