[–]Suired 90 points91 points  (13 children)

It's time. We need to change the genre to Hollowvania.

[–]sushibowl 62 points63 points  (10 children)

At least Nintendo came out with Samus Returns in 2017, same year as hollow knight released. Castlevania hasn't released a game since 2014 and that barely even fit the genre. If anything it should be hollowtroid, or something.

[–]SadisticSpectre 31 points32 points  (6 children)

Just in case you don’t already know, there’s a new series called Bloodstained from one of the devs that worked on a lot of the Castlevania games. Curse of the Moon 1 & 2 follow the OG Castlevania formula, while Ritual of the Night follows the SOTN formula. The games are VERY good and feel exactly like Castlevania.

[–]NeccoZeinith 21 points22 points  (2 children)

so, metroidstained

[–][deleted] 26 points27 points  (1 child)

He says for this year.... Silksong is confirmed for e3 2022 baybeeee!!!

[–]Spikeantestor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, now I can set my expectations. I hate going into every Nintendo video showcase having all my hopes pinned to one announcement but it's been that way. At least I've got something to love.

[–]Dukemon102 1104 points1105 points  (151 children)

Indie game DLCs transforming into pseudo-sequels and taking forever to come out seems to be a common pattern.

[–]WirelessTrees 99 points100 points  (10 children)

Hollow Knight began development in 2013 and released 2017. This was a 4 year development time.

Hollow Knight Silksong was originally planned to be a DLC for the base game, but in 2019, it was announced to be its own game, a sequel to the incredible Hollow Knight.

It has been 2 years since this announcement, and almost 5 years since Hollow Knight originally came out.

If they revealed that Silksong was going to be its own game at the time they began development for it as a standalone, it would have 2 years of development, half of what hollow knight took. It's likely they had been working on it for longer, but we don't know anything about that.

So it hasn't been "forever", it's just not ready yet. Because hollow knight came out so long ago, it likely makes it seem like Silksong is taking forever.

[–]Farnso 48 points49 points  (1 child)

All good points but it's worth pointing out that a multiple significant free content patches came out for hollow knight through late 2018, along with several ports to other platforms in that like 20 month time period after initial release.

[–]WirelessTrees 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. While hollow knight was released, it was still being worked on, likely the center of attention when it came to Team Cherry's development.

[–]Sphezzle 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Take your logically reasoned argument, your persuasive comparison of development timelines, and your well-deserved upvote, and get out of my bar!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

That's cool. So, if we imagine that the game takes 3-4 years of development too, then that would place it coming out 2022-2023 ish.

I'd be okay with that. Games take a long time to build, and I can wait for it.

[–]AmaterasuWolf21 17 points18 points  (8 children)

When was Hollow Knight released?

[–]roboBNF 26 points27 points  (7 children)

Feb 2017

[–]dont_dick_hide_prick 77 points78 points  (6 children)

So like... ten years ago?

[–]SuperDuperAIDS 20 points21 points  (4 children)

From the sound of some people wailing about this, you'd think. I get they wanna play it, so do I, but not before it's ready

[–]Matt87M 13 points14 points  (3 children)

You'd think people got more patient after cyberpunk...

[–]RelentlessHope 38 points39 points  (5 children)

Nothing "pseudo" about this sequel, though.

[–]Cactoir 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Let Silksong come out and then we'll say if it is a "pseudo-sequel".

[–]TheSilentHeel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, happened with the Katana Zero DLC I've been waiting for, and it's happening with the Cuphead DLC.

[–]Moneyfrenzy 1105 points1106 points  (20 children)

I hear they are incorporating a fully playable and translated version of Mother 3 in a secret area of Silksong, kinda like the NES games in Animal Crossing GC, that’s probably why it’s taking so long

[–]TheRealCormanoWild 426 points427 points  (6 children)

Yeah i heard this too, i have an uncle who works at team cherry and that's exactly what he said

[–]automirage04 265 points266 points  (5 children)

All three guys at team cherry are my uncles.

[–]brand_new_nalgene 195 points196 points  (0 children)

This was recently confirmed by a Wikipedia edit I just made

[–]Bl4ckb100d 65 points66 points  (6 children)

I heard they are incorporating Half Life 3 in a secret area of Mother 3 as well, that's why it's taking so long.

[–]SunNStarz 9 points10 points  (4 children)

I heard a demo of Elder Scrolls VI will be a secret easter egg in Half Life 3 and that's why it's taking so long.

[–]sampete1 9 points10 points  (3 children)

I heard a fully playable Breath of the Wild Two: Game of the Year edition will be a minigame in the Elder Scrolls VI demo and that's why it's taking so long

[–]Tom_Hanks_Spanks 8 points9 points  (2 children)

I heard Portal 3 will an bonus dungeon in the playable Breath of the Wild Two: Game of the Year edition that will be a mini game in the Elder Scrolls VI demo that's an easter egg in the Half Life 3 secret area of the fully translated Mother 3 secret area inside Silksong...

And that's actually why its taking so long.

[–]skaersSabody 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I heard that through a complicated series of Portals anf skips in the 3.14 level of Portal 3 that involve managing 3 portals simultaneously, you can access a secret section exclusive to VR where you can play Bloodborne 2 and that's why it's taking so long

[–]SunNStarz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I heard there's an optional boss fight in that VR Bloodborne 2 that leads to a new path where you can play Grand Theft Auto 6, and that's why its taking so long.

[–]rsn_lie 209 points210 points  (6 children)

I was really expecting it at e3 this year. I guess this is better than the disappointment of e3 coming and going without it.

[–]MikaINFINITY 125 points126 points  (5 children)

Tbh I wish more studio’s would just announce they won’t have anything like this early on so you won’t be waiting for something that isn’t there…

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They probably consider the online speculation as free marketing, and having a few weeks of, WTF THEY AREN’T SHOWING ELDEN RING, is probably worse then 5 minutes of it with the rest of the nerds time being spent talking about what did get announced.

[–]sideaccountguy 128 points129 points  (4 children)

It sucks but it's understandable. Indie games have become more and more ambitious but at the same time their staff continue being of 3 to 5 people in some cases so it takes a lot of time.

At least knowing team cherry will have no announcements on E3 means we won't have people "disappointed" at the lack of silksong news in the nintendo direct.

[–]FedoraSkeleton 67 points68 points  (3 children)

Don't kid yourself. We'll still have people disappointed at the lack of Silksong news at E3 even though they literally said it wouldn't be there.

[–][deleted] 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Well yeah, that’s because they’re only saying this now so that we’ll be EXTRA surprised when they DO announce a Silksong release date! /s

[–]SimonCucho 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Yeah, but they said it ina discord server, they haven't bothered to update their website blog in like 18 months, unless big gaming news websites cover this, not much people are going to hear about this.

[–]snoop_Nogg 136 points137 points  (12 children)

Silksong, game of the year 2022?

I seriously want them to take as much time as they need. It'll give me more time to finish the Pantheons.

[–]Packbacka 51 points52 points  (11 children)

Game of the decade (but maybe not this decade)

[–]GrouchyBat 16 points17 points  (10 children)

More like game of the 22nd century.

[–]mrBreadBird 14 points15 points  (8 children)

I don't get this talk of it taking forever. It's been less than 3 years since Godmaster released and it's a team of less than 10 people. The original Hollow Knight took at leas three years to get to release and this game is even more ambitious.

[–]VitoSkywalker 4 points5 points  (6 children)

It said coming soon at 2019 Nintendo’s E3! That’s why it feels like is taking forever, because we’ve been expecting for it to release soon for two years!

[–]Abby_BumbleBee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they had gameplay back then that looked pretty finished. And they had those magazine articles recently that built up a lot of hype, so there were a lot of people thinking it was going to be announced soon

[–]ringo_phillips 32 points33 points  (2 children)

Maybe the real Silksong was the friends we made along the way

[–]YeOldGravyBoat 33 points34 points  (3 children)

You think this sucks, imagine being a Metroid fan. The only thing we’ve heard since 2017 is “sorry, we’re gonna start over”.

[–]Elastichedgehog 59 points60 points  (16 children)

Man, I don't mind waiting at all but it does pique my interest.

Why is it taking so long to get more information?

Bet it's going to be great regardless. At least I have time for another Hollow Knight playthrough!

[–]CliffExcellent123 60 points61 points  (12 children)

Why is it taking so long to get more information?

The same reason most indie devs don't give too much information on release dates: they don't know when it's going to be finished and they don't want to give a release date they can't commit to.

[–]SimonCucho 14 points15 points  (6 children)

I mean they did say holidays 2019 at some point in the past, how do you go from that to second half of 2021 and probably beyond?

[–]IdiotBehindAKeyboard 10 points11 points  (3 children)

By continually implementing new content and ideas. Which we know for a fact is what they’ve been doing. Leth, the guy in this post, recently said in an interview that he’s had to tell them to stop adding things because theres just too much and save some stuff for a possible sequel or dlc.

[–]MeddYatek 87 points88 points  (1 child)

Silksong news won't be in the 21st century.

[–]myspace-2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

oh cool so then silksong best game of 1999?

[–]Bearded_Wildcard 231 points232 points  (17 children)

Perfectly fine with this. Of course I want the game, but I'd prefer them to take their time and make this as much of a masterpiece as the original is.

[–]corticalization 126 points127 points  (3 children)

True. I’m also appreciative of them saying so ahead of time, so people aren’t going into E3 with their hopes up and then being disappointed about the lack of info. I would’ve certainly expected something otherwise.

[–]Bearded_Wildcard 18 points19 points  (2 children)

Yeah exactly. Same reason I also respect their decision to not give any expected release dates until it's set in stone.

[–]mrBreadBird 20 points21 points  (1 child)

And also not work themselves to death! Crunch is a little different when it's a team of less than 10 people making it in that it's more or less entirely up to them in this situation, but I know lots of indie devs do it anyways, if only because the love game dev so much.

[–]Fearnog 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel the exact same and I'm conscious of the rabid and rude fans that get an assumption wrong and then act passive aggressive to the devs. There's still a worldwide pandemic can we please allow them to work away because even if they don't release a buggy game there is a definite possibility of them cutting content.

[–]Panda_hat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. They can take as much time as they want - my money will wait for them.

[–]badolcatsyl 303 points304 points  (39 children)

Cyberpunk taught us all the dangers of arrogance and hubris, so at least we won't be dealing with that situation here.

[–]SuperDuperAIDS 156 points157 points  (30 children)

I hope Team Cherry goes the way of Supergiant Games and just keeps making banger after banger and each one gets progressively better

[–]Humblebee89 22 points23 points  (15 children)

Is Pyre better than Transistor? I haven't played it. I haven't heard great things about it.

[–]IBetThisIsTakenToo 36 points37 points  (2 children)

I skipped it originally but played it recently after Hades. I thought it was really good! Gameplay is not nearly as deep as their other games, but the storytelling is possibly their best.

[–]Isofruit 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I'd support this. Gameplay is weaker than Pyre, but that is because Pyre had really baller gameplay, it's still pretty good. But that storytelling, man that just took me for a ride several times over.

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Pyre is a very different game from Transistor, so it's hard to make a direct comparison or say that one is 'better' than the other, IMO. They offer different experiences.

Transistor is in the same vein as Bastion and Hades: isometric camera, action-oriented, linear, etc. Pyre is more of a fusion of storytelling and a sports game. I suggest watching some gameplay to get a feel for what it's like. (IIRC one of TotalBiscuit's last videos was on Pyre, so that would be good to check out).

I think the storytelling in Pyre is top notch, much better than both Bastion and Transistor, and probably a bit better than Hades even. One of the developers has said that there are millions of possible end states based on what happens with the characters, so if you really get invested, the replayability is there.

When it comes to the 'active' gameplay though, it's more of a sports game. In brief, you compete against other teams in 'rites,' which are like a combination of basketball, handball, and soccer. There are of course some rules, and each character has their own unique abilities. Both winning the rites and losing them advances the story, so it's not like you need to save scum or anything. Personally I found the rites got a little stale after a while, especially as the game accelerates towards the end, but I'm still glad I played through it and enjoyed the game overall.

I will say too that if you really like their other games, you can see a direct progression from Bastion to Transistor to Pyre to Hades in how each game iteratively builds on the previous one and emphasizes one or two elements, which is pretty neat IMO.

[–]SuperDuperAIDS 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I haven't played Pyre yet either, but I've heard mixed reviews. It seems like a genuinely fun game from the looks of it

[–]RelentlessHope 9 points10 points  (2 children)

One of my friends says it has a better story that Hades. I haven't played Pyre yet but if it's anything like Hades, that's high praise.

[–]TheChronoCross 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Played all 4 games. Beat 3/4. Pyre is not very good, though the art is beautiful. It’s an ambitious project (Darren called it “wizard basketball with reading”) and the combat is pretty fun, but it lacks what makes SG games incredible: tremendous vocal work, strong attachment to the characters, etc. Still my favorite studio though, and I'd definitely buy a physical Supergiant collection with all 4 games for switch. But I digress.

Don't know if they are all improvements on another, but they are all mostly bangers.

[–]CliffExcellent123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Comes down to taste. Some people prefer Transistor, some prefer Pyre.

I never got into Transistor. Didn't find the gameplay very gripping and the story didn't hook me. Still haven't finished it.

Loved Pyre, it was my favourite Supergiant game until the launch version of Hades came out. The gameplay was unique and instantly absorbed me and I enjoyed the story from start to finish.

It's a shame that Pyre is their only game that's not on the Switch, doesn't sound like they have any plans for it either. But you can get it on Steam and I'd recommend you do.

But other people love Transistor and couldn't get into Pyre. That's fine, it's all subjective innit. They're very different games, and neither of them are particularly similar to Hades.

[–]jonny_eh 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I honestly don’t think anyone can make a better game than Hollow Knight. If that’s their benchmark, Silksong may never come out.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This pretty much. It'll suck but I can wait for much longer.

[–]MyHeroAcademiaSucks 11 points12 points  (2 children)

A video game coming out buggy taught you that? It wasn’t the first, and it won’t be the last.

[–]drocha94 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have to tell myself it’s for the best.

[–]wealldeservetodii 66 points67 points  (2 children)

I had a dream that Silksong wouldn't release until I reached 112% completion in Hollow Knight. And as a constant procrastinator, this has held true so far. So sorry guys, my bad! I'll buckle down and do it soon!

[–]myspace-2 17 points18 points  (0 children)

you bitch

i’m going to get fireborn to coach you

[–]PaperSonic 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Team Cherry were so dedicated to making their games be like Metroid they even announced a game and didn't reveal more info about it for years. Amazing.

[–]Rhodie114 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not happy about this obviously, but I like this kind of announcement way more than sitting through a whole presentation waiting for the silksong announcement that never comes.

[–]K0KA42 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Lol, they need Leth to come out and say this before every Nintendo Direct and Indie World, unfortunately. The chat is buried with "WHERE'S SILKSONG" all the time.

[–]Govorkian 22 points23 points  (9 children)

Team cherry is like what 5 dudes? Take their time on this masterpiece it's done when it's done

[–]Wolventec 34 points35 points  (8 children)

smaller its 3 people

[–]Govorkian 28 points29 points  (7 children)

Damn 3 people made hollow knight? Crazy world

[–]-Moonchild- 26 points27 points  (5 children)

its 4 if you include the composer of the music.

[–]wetback 48 points49 points  (4 children)

Considering how great the music is, definitely include the guy

[–]the_hesitation 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Christopher Larkin did an amazing job on that score

[–]Kminardo 4 points5 points  (2 children)

HK is one of those soundtracks I'll listen to and get hit with a wave of emotions remembering boss fight struggles or the first time I unlocked a new area.

It really is fantastic.

[–]N1cknamed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They started with 3, but one of them left fairly early in development. They later hired someone else to fill the gap. Not including the composer.

[–]softball753 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd rather wait and have it be as good as the first one.

[–]blackandwhitetalon 11 points12 points  (11 children)

How does Hollow Knight compare to Igarashi Castlevania games (SotN, Aria & Dawn of Sorrow, etc) & Bloodstained RotN? Will I like it if I'm a fan of those?

The reason I ask is because I get recommended metroidvania games all the time and 90% of them fall flat compared to the above and I just end up getting disappointed since I find that nothing quite scratches that Igavania itch

[–]Returnofthemack3 21 points22 points  (2 children)

I'd say you'd like it. It's def one of the best Metroid vanias around. With that said, I don't feel like it fully scratches the igavania itch because it's more if a Metroid type game with a dark souls type world and storytelling. For instance, you get power ups and have some flexibility in how you build your character, but you can't change weapons and magic is limited. It also lacks a leveling system so you can't just grind for items, xp etc in order to over power a section or boss. The dark souls comparison mainly comes from how it can be fairly difficult and requires skill rather than cheesing. I love igavanias but they're never hard like hk, so it's an important point to consider

[–]blackandwhitetalon 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Thank you! Super helpful... although I'll hold off for now as weapon variety is probably my favourite thing about Igavania games

[–]miki_momo0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Worth pointing out that Silksong will have weapon variety!

[–]AlphaPotato42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my opinion it is better. I would definitely recommend getting it. Even if you don't like it, it is completely underpriced at just $15.

[–]Sharruk 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Same boat as you, Aria, Dawn, OoE and PoR (specifically PoR) were my favourites too! And it is quite hard to scratch that itch indeed. Hollow Knight did that quite well for me even though it has less ability variations than the castlevania games. Loved playing Hollow Knight for a good bit, but it is quite a bit harder than the DS games. end game content of HK is definitely too hard for me personally, but the game has insane amount of charme.

Scratched the metroidvania itch for me (which, similar to you, not many games can), but it is for sure a bit different than castlevania. Less concrete story, the story approach is closer to dark souls where you can guess a lot of things from visual design or hints.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can’t wait but I will be patient

[–]imajamez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So long as it releases before the heat death of the universe I'm fine with this.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Devs: There is nothing we are announcing. We will not be announcing anything at all. Nothing will be announced.

Reddit: ...so you're saying there's a chance

[–]GodDuckman 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Makes sense. No matter what gets shown at Nintendo's E3 direct, everything is going to be overshadowed by BOTW2, so maybe better to wait until you have a chance to dominate the news cycle. A new Indie World, perhaps?

[–]I_wish_I_was_a_robot 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Did that cup head update ever come out? That's how I feel about this one too

[–]of-silk-and-song 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Still not out, but I feel you

[–]SacredNose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

:(

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.

[–]MyThirdBonusDonut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Take all the time you need, but dang if I'm not disappointed at the lack of updates. They must have SOMETHING set in stone after all this time that they could announce.

[–]Melee_Hero_SLP6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats sad

[–]BottleFlipMeme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good, I’m still stuck in Deepnest.

[–]mattr1986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So it’s coming out before E3? /s

[–]33whitten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm actually in disbelief. I really thought they would be with nintendo again since they have console exclusivity for silksong. Good lord I am excited for this game but I'm really curious on why it is taking so long in comparison to hollowknight.
