Is UFC 233 actually cancelled?

So I had a look at the wikipedia page and it said UFC 233 has been "postponed". What doesn't make sense to me is that UFC 234 is less than a month away now, so how can they fit a UFC 233 inbetween now and 234, considering they still haven't really announced anything on it? And surely it wouldn't make sense to have it after UFC 234. So is this event fully cancelled, and they are just going to go straight from 232 to 234?

Breaking: Ben Askren vs. Robbie Lawler targeted for UFC 233 on Jan. 26 in Anaheim, per Dana White. Contracts are not signed yet from what I'm told, but UFC is working on getting it finalized. Story up soon on @ESPN.

Who's Headlining UFC 233?

As many of you know, UFC 233 is just around the corner (less than 2 months away) and there's currently no headliner for it, as the previous headliner, TJ vs. Cejudo, got bumped up a week early to the first ESPN+ show. That begs the question, who will headline 233? The UFC generally headlines shows with either a title fight or a big, moneyfight. Lets look at which champions are available.

  • Strawweight: Injured

  • Women's Flyweight: Booked

  • Flyweight: Booked

  • Women's Bantamweight: Booked

  • Women's Featherweight: Booked

  • Bantamweight: Booked

  • Featherweight: Booked

  • Lightweight: Available

  • Welterweight: Injured

  • Middleweight: Booked

  • Light Heavyweight: Booked

  • Heavyweight: Available

As you can see, only Khabib and DC are available right now for a defense, but that said, if they take a fight, they'll have to be on less than 7 weeks notice, quite a quick turn around for either men. It's possible that a couple of the fighters who are due to fight soon finish their fights dominantly and can get a quick turnaround, but the UFC surely can't bank on that.

That's why my guess for the headline of 233 is actually gonna be for the inaugural 165 belt. It's a straight ticket to a title shot, so whoever signs up for it has few incentives to turn it down. That said, there are a couple of people who would be willing to do this so soon, Khabib, Colby, and Askren. Khabib can definitely make 165 on less than 2 months notice and Askren and Colby are small WWs so the cut shouldn't be too bad. 233 is also happening in California so Khabib could probably fight there even with that ongoing investigation by Nevada's commission.

Of course, it's also possible they panic with a month to go and give Ngannou a shot at DC and DC just repeats what he did at 230 again. Or they could do McGregor vs. Diaz 3 for no real reason other than to headline the show. It's a mystery.

Aldo is surprised by Swanson's dropping out from UFC 233 card: "The fight had already been decided for UFC 233, so much so that I was asking the contract for three weeks, and the contract did not arrive, it did not arrive..."
