Complaining about color e-ink displays is similar to when people assumed that e-readers were a fad.

Whenever someone mentions the color e-ink displays that Amazon's competitors are releasing, there are always people mentioning how they don't see the point of having color displays, or how the color isn't very good, or how the resolution isn't as sharp, etc.

This reminds me of when e-readers with e-ink displays first became available. So many readers (as in people) thought that they were a temporary fad, and that the experience of reading a book could never be accurately replicated on a device that needs to be charged in order to work.

To be fair, those first e-readers were clunky, had low resolutions, no backlight, and were very slow.

E-readers like our kindles have been using Eink's Carta displays for a long time. Through various iterations and generational improvements, the Carta displays have been updated with better resolutions, sharper contrasts, and faster refresh times.

Eink (the company) pretty much has a monopoly on e-ink displays. The Carta displays themselves surpassed the previous Pearl displays, also from Eink.

Eink has now released the Kaleido displays, which offer the same black-and-white features of the Carta displays (including 300 PPI) with the addition of 4096 colors and 150 PPI color resolution (which earlier Carta displays also used).

All of the new color e-readers from Amazon's competitors are using the Kaleido displays, and it's practically guaranteed that Amazon will source the same display for its new color kindles.

Regardless of how an individual might feel towards color e-ink, it will replace the Carta screens. And with generational improvements, they will get better and better.

The fact that Amazon has not released a color kindle yet does not mean that it's not an important technological achievement.

Kaleido is here to stay and it WILL become the standard, so people should get used to that now instead of constantly tearing down color e-readers just because they don't have one yet or just because they haven't been perfected.

You guys are freaking me out.

Every time I do my research and think I find a decent TV in my price range, I come here and read, "it's garbage," "it sucks," or "you'd get a better picture farting into a plastic baggie."

What makes a $600 brand name tv so bad???? I'm not looking for anything crazy, just something for my kids to watch on (the diffusers are dropping like flies on my 10 year old Samsung...every scene looks like an alien planet with 4 suns).

Regular Vision Pro users, what are some surprising experiences that you did not anticipate loving?

Regular Vision Pro users, what are some surprising experiences that you did not anticipate loving?

Having been a daily Vision Pro user for almost three months now, I am finding some pleasant surprises that I did not anticipate loving before the purchase. A little bit of background, I have been a VR enthusiast since the Oculus DK2, which was my first VR headset. I have since owned the Oculus CV1, Quest1, Quest 2, and Pico 4 (mainly for PCVR). As with many of the VR veterans, the full immersive experiences of the Vision Pro are less enticing than many existing PCVR experiences despite having much better displays due to various reasons. It is really the spatial computing aspect that makes me love and use the device everyday for works and media consumption.

While I have largely anticipated loving the floating windows, as I have some such experiences on other headsets, and it is the "killer feature" of the Vision Pro for me, I am also discovering some pleasant experiences that I did not anticipate.

  1. I love playing musics from YouTube or other video services in a window above my Mac virtual display. Not only does the spatial music coming from above creates a new experience that I have never had before, but it also makes it very easy to glance at the beautiful artworks or videos accompanying once a while. I also like to adjust the floating window size to "fit" the artworks to achieve the best experience. It is essentially a floating music screen with spatial sounds. I have never thought that I will enjoy music while working this way.

  2. Reading "spatial" books/comics is also a surprisingly different experience. There are two things that distinguish from reading from other devices or physical books. One is that I do not need to hold on to anything while reading. This is especially nice when I am reading large pages or want to have the comic artwork appearing big. I can do that if I lay other physically devices down while reading, but I quite often prefer reading with my heads leveled or slightly up. However, the downside is that page turning is slightly more cumbersome.

  3. Opening up Windora with good quality panoramic outdoor scenery photos gives me a strong sense of looking out through a real window, which is an especially pleasant experiences during gloomy days or in the evening. While I have had virtual window experiences in other VR experiences, the combination of panoramic photos with the spatially anchored window in a real environment gives me a much stronger surreal feeling than I have expected.

The more I use the Vision Pro, the more I am starting to find experiences that can only be done in a spatial computing (or just XR) paradigm. Please also share some of your such experiences!

Those who switched from a Samsung Galaxy to a Google Pixel phone, did you stay with your Pixel or did you switch back to a Galaxy?

Im a keep this simple, I have the S23 Ultra and the Pixel 8 Pro. The hardware of the Ultra feels great but each time I switch back to my ultra, I pick up my pixel 8 pro and everything feels much better, it's like a relief. The only thing I don't like on my pixel is this modem jeez it's not great at all but it's not a deal breaker especially if you do regular day to day phone stuff. But you definitely can tell how much more snappier the ultra is in comparison. I also feel the font and how it's calibrated on the pixels should be adjusted by google to fit the right way on bigger screens like the 8 pro. I had to dive into the settings and find smallest width (411) in order to get a good font size without the words being so big that the sentences looked out of proportion. But my point is there's a big tug of war between my S23 ultra and my pixel 8 pro. I think the cameras on the pixel keeps me grounded but I wish since Samsung and Google are collaborating why not push out Samsung Hardware with Google software especially for the cameras with Samsung's zoom tech. What is your favourite movie that really showcases dolby atmos ?

A lot of movies that I put on don't tend to take much advantage of my atmos setup.

There are a handful where it's like wow ! , the mix on that was awesome.

1986 Top Gun (Remastered in Dolby Atmos)

2022 Top Gun: Maverick

2019 Angel has fallen

I'd like to open the floor.

Which movies do you enjoy the atmos experience of ?
