She looks rather happy in this photo.

[–]HWK_290 590 points591 points  (21 children)

She looks happier in this photo than during the entire actual movie when she's supposedly falling in love

[–]transmogrify 395 points396 points  (8 children)

"Cut! Natalie, you're smiling again. Remember: you're in love, and you're sad, and you're deeply concerned for the future of democracy, and your performance should express nothing at all. Take it again from 'You are in love with me.' And, action!"

The joy from the lack of the first half would be balanced by the absolute devastation that would be not having Sir Christopher Lee's performance in the second

sometimes I'll click on a thread just knowing my pasta will be here waiting. but then sometimes it isn't. and I think, am I not relevant anymore? Has the Aaron Judge version taken over the original version? At first I didn't like everyone posting my pasta and getting karma and gold for it, but like an aging woman walking past a construction site, I'm sad not to find the thing that once annoyed me. Anyways. Here it is.

Natalie Portman is the reason I work out. I have this fantasy where we start talking at the Vanity Fair Oscars party bar. We exchange a few pleasantries. She asks what I do. I say I loved her in New Girl. She laughs. I get my drink.

"Well, see ya," I say and walk away. I've got her attention now. How many guys voluntarily leave a conversation with Natalie Portman? She touches her neck as she watches me leave.

Later, as the night's dragged on and the coterie of gorgeous narcissists grows increasingly loose, she finds me on the balcony, my bowtie undone, smoking a cigarette.

"Got a spare?" she asks.

"What's in it for me?" I say as I hand her one of my little white ladies. She smiles.

"Conversation with me, duh."

I laugh.

"What's so funny?" she protests.

"Nothing, nothing... It's just... don't you grow tired of the egos?" I extend my lighter towards her, shielding it from the wind, then sparking it with a snap.

"You get used to it," she says, daintily blowing her first puff over her shoulder.

"What would you do if you weren't an actress?" I ask.

"Teaching, I think."

"And if I was your student, what would I be learning?"

"Discipline," she says quickly, looking up into my eyes, before changing the subject. "Where are you from?"

"Bermuda," I say.

"Oh wow. That's lovely."

"It's ok," I admit. "Not everything is to my liking."

"What could possibly be not to your liking in Bermuda?" she inquires.

"I don't like sand," I tell her. "It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere."

"I'm haunted by the kiss you should have never given me."

I love when the dialog completely changed to Shakespearian Era during the cringy love scenes lol

[–]Varhtan 3 points4 points  (4 children)

That's the only bit of the script that is perturbing. It's logical for Anakin to want to say that, but it's understandably awkward and discomforting all the same. The sand line though, that's completely fine and fail to understand any criticism of it.

[–]JacktheflashClone Trooper 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Oh really?

[–]TLJDidNothingWrongChopper (C1-10P) 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Yep, kids will say stupid shit, especially while flirting, and Anakin was an awkward 15 year old virgin. If I was Lucas I would've made it more obvious the line wasn't supposed to be taken seriously.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean if you look at the context (Padme talking about her childhood and how she played in the sand) and remember that Ani was a slave for 9 years on Tatooine, it's pretty obvious why he would say that.

[–]SlashycentJedi Anakin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“Yeah, that’s it, that’s the emotion I’m talking about! Never ever show that!"

-George Lucas, directing the meadow scene

[–]Valiantheart 52 points53 points  (5 children)

Hey guys, you may not know this, but she's real purdy.

[–]RVAWildCardWolfman 10 points11 points  (4 children)

Part of why She plays love interest characters so well probably because she looks so adorable when pretending to be in love or happy. You can believe whoever's she's acting with is enchanted with her.

[–]Radulno 4 points5 points  (3 children)

You can believe whoever's she's acting with is enchanted with her.

Because they probably her tbh. How can you be not enchanted with Natalie Portman?

[–]RVAWildCardWolfman 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Well I've never heard she was a hard acting partner. I'm going to give most actors enough credit NOT to fall in love with their costars, and assume professional detachment. But I'm betting pretending to get lost in her eyes/smile was the easiest scene Hayden Christiansen or Chris Hemsworth had on set.

[–]Radulno 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I didn't think you meant fall in love with enchanted tbh. Of course not, especially since let's be honest actors are mostly hot guys which are pretty used to be around incredibly charming and beautiful women (which many actresses are) so would be pretty complicated if they were falling in love with all their coworkers. But it's not that unheard of, you often hear about actor couple forming on set (I guess how other people are sometimes falling in love at work).

[–]chuckles67 126 points127 points  (50 children)

This must be during the one scene in that movie that isn’t green screen

[–]DrJawnJedi Anakin 149 points150 points  (47 children)

the deleted scenes from AOTC where they're at Padme's house are actually really cool and good plot work, sucks they got cut

[–]RVAWildCardWolfman 79 points80 points  (20 children)

I love that Padme's mom and sister immediately think she's finally brought a boyfriend home. It adds to the tragedy that their own ideas of the their roles in the world were the bigger downfall for their relationship than the actual world around them.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (12 children)

Wait what?!?!!

[–]RVAWildCardWolfman 43 points44 points  (10 children)

Would a romance with Anakin destroy Padme's political career? Could Anakin have never helped the galaxy if he was expelled from the order?

Their fears of how their "forbidden love" could destroy them probably led to the decisions that ruined them moreso than what the actual consequences would have. They thought the galaxy was against them, but was it really?

[–]SeesEverythingTwice 6 points7 points  (6 children)

Not like Palpatine would've left him alone if he'd been expelled though

[–]Thespian21 5 points6 points  (5 children)

Palpatine would’ve been killed by Mace most likely.

[–]gesocks 8 points9 points  (3 children)

mace would not have known that palp is the sithlord in that case

[–]AncientSithRebel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone still gets fucked by clones, and Papa Palpatine keeps his looks.

[–]disposablecontact 3 points4 points  (2 children)

According to my understanding, you don't get expelled from the order for anything. They do tell you that you shouldn't have relationships and the like because it distracts from your duties and makes you vulnerable, both to action against your loved ones and slipping into the dark side. At the end of the day, they simply can't police it, sentient beings are going to exercise their free will (such as it is in a galaxy subject to The Force) and plenty of Jedi broke the rules without any ill consequence.

But you know, not all of them were whining about how they deserved the rank of Master and a seat on the council even though they'd been boning a queen in secret for 5 years.

[–]RVAWildCardWolfman 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I'm still trying to figure how he'd even convince himself he'd qualify for master since Ashoka never passed her trails.

The lore of Jedi's internal policies might be the most inconsistent in the franchise.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Disagree totally. It contributed, but Anakin obsessing over not losing Padme would have happened regardless of their roles.

[–]RVAWildCardWolfman 8 points9 points  (3 children)

There were a lot of factor going on that we'll never really know exactly how they all interacted.

Were the visions prophetic and set in stone? Or was the powerful telepath Sidious instilling them? Was Padme always going to die, or did she die because his fall did literally break her heart? Could Anakin have gotten more help if he wasn't sidestepping around the truth with his conversations with Yoda?

Not trying to argue, just interpreting the texts from other perspectives.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

No I get what you’re saying. That’s all true.

I think the story could still happen if the societal elements were removed. Say if Jedi could marry and if Padme having a husband wasn’t an issue. I think Palpatine would still want to rule, would still manipulate Anakin, perhaps take advantage of his obsession with keeping Padme safe, Anakin would still be erratic, would turn on the Jedi, etc.

[–]RVAWildCardWolfman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh no doubts the key plot beats COULD have happened and probably would. But the possibilities of avoiding a tragedy and the missed off ramps are what make the ending of a tragic story hit just right.

[–]AdmiralScavengerAnakin Skywalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have wondered that myself. I think Palpatine caused the visions. The plot of ROTS makes it to neat for Palpatine to have not had an idea to get him to fall.

Anakin has his first vision.

Palpatine meets Anakin in his off and puts him on the Council (maybe he read his mind and learned of his fear).

At the opera Palpatine tells Anakin General Grievous has been located (this is the beginning of the final stage of Palpatine’s plan) and tell Anakin the story of Plagueis.

Palpatine reveals himself and offers Anakin the power to save Padmé.

It just always seemed to neat the way the events unfolded. Although it could be argued that Palpatine only began the final stage of his plan by revealing where Grievous was and that could have been postponed if needed.

I also don’t think Padmé would have died if Anakin hadn’t fallen. To me that has always been the tragedy of her death, had he not acted to prevent her death she wouldn’t have died.

[–]DrJawnJedi Anakin 6 points7 points  (1 child)

And she says Ani isn't my boyfriend and his heart explodes

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You know this isn’t from the movie itself because a character is actually showing emotion.

[–]scandalousmambo 25 points26 points  (1 child)

Star Wars. The story of how a slave became a violent child murderer while his reptilian friend went from clumsy hobo to bom bad da general. Then a group of totally unrelated people joined forces to kill a man who was apparently trying to turn himself into a Flash Gordon prop. Along the way a big space station exploded.

[–]JacktheflashClone Trooper 1 point2 points  (1 child)

[–]VaderFitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While probably my favorites of the prequels, as I am a clone trooper fan, the droid factory scene (particularly the parts involving C3PO) make it a bit challenging to watch and enjoy.
