The vegans are annoying the crap out of me. Why go on the show at all? I don’t think they’ve done a single challenge, and you just know there will be cultural challenges involving animals, have they never watched the show? I’m vegan, and I’m glad they’re last.

"Don't hurt it" they say to the nice man helping the bird they found. That's what prompted me to come here and have a whinge. Like, you're not the only people in the world who love animals ladies.

u/IntellegentIdiot avatar

Wasn't it "don't kill it"? Like the guy is going to run round the corner and stomp it?

Yeah, it was both. Don't kill it followed by a cautionary "just don't hurt it". Ugh.

To be fair I think this is one of the more intense animal processing tasks they've ever done, I'd say it's a step above any old meat eating task

TAR USA Season 25 was a really great season, in my opinion!

Yeah you’re absolutely right, but I mean they’re not just vegan, they’re animal activists, and I mean even though they lucked out with a very full-on challenge, even the smallest animal exploitation would have stopped them. They just didn’t look up to the task at all. Why put them on?

u/CreswickOctober avatar

I don't think we can say even the smallest animal exploitation would have stopped them. Bren says on the mat that she was going to try and take on any challenging animal tasks but it seems they just got thrown in the deep end

Maybe Bren could have handled an egg/oyster/meat eating task by herself, I don't know

Conversely if the tannery challenge was skinning the goats to get the hides I think more than one team may have quit

Well I’m glad the vegans are going home….if they got through after all the piggy backs it would have been upsetting

Agree. Since they took 2 penalties for not completing challenge, it would be unfair if they survived the legs while others who tried had to go home.

More replies

The penalties here are worse than TAR Canada. When the penalty is potentially less time than it takes to complete a task, there's something wrong in your Leg Design room.

u/Apple_Slipper avatar

Agreed. I think TAR USA has penalties that last for a couple of hours at least. The early seasons had 24-hour penalties as well.

I wish the fixed the only 30 minute time penalty from last season, but nope. 30 minutes is nothing on this race.

u/glider521al avatar
Edited

Episode 3 proves otherwise XD.

Though I agree the penalty should be reworked; it should scale according to the difficulty of the task and how much the team attempted the task.

You really shouldn’t spoil episode 3 in the episode 2 discussion. I saw this comment before watching and it took a lot of the suspense out for me.

u/glider521al avatar

Very sorry about that, I've gone back and added a spoiler tag to the comment. I thought I hadn't revealed what happened when the penalty was applied; just that it had an impact.

It probably means that none of these tasks should take longer than 30 minutes

Shout out to the dog’s being the best hype-animals out there supporting Sam and Stu in their run to the mat! 🥳

u/Apple_Slipper avatar

That was a wholesome moment!

More replies

Bren and Anja is a waste of a casting slot. Remove the fact that they’re vegan activists, they did not complete 2 challenges, takes leisurely walks, and flat out not entertaining.

u/glider521al avatar

They did do the pottery cart and preserved lemon challenges though (the latter with ease).

u/OrnaciaWasRobbedMom avatar

I was entertained. If they were in group 1 they might have made it through tbh.

More replies

I was expecting them to keep the two groups apart for a bit longer than just one leg...

Beau clones himself?

u/mug3n avatar

Phil and Jon (hosts of TARUSA and TARCAN) split hosting duties with Beau, ez.

u/Apple_Slipper avatar
Edited

Since a production member caught COVID later on during the filming of the race and Beau having to quarantine, Scott Tweedie will take up the role of the host for a small amount of time.

I think it could have been possible. Beau only meets the teams at the pit stop anyways.

u/Phonixrmf avatar

The hosts have to do their location shoots, too. Phil said that his day is just as busy as the racers, but I don't know how Beau's day is like

He does more than other hosts by trying all challenges himself.

Phil normally would just talk at the scene, for example.

18 teams together is going to get messy but is probably better than the messiness of different groups of teams each night

I think it would have been a logistical nightmare to keep them apart for a long time, but I wish they had half the team eliminated from each group and then marge them for a total of 10 teams.

I know Beau isn’t the perfect host, but I really like how he does all the challenges, or for the most part anyway….I like his energy

Beau said in an interview tonight that he had to get past his fear of heights for a challenge involving jumping off a bridge in greece... which none of the teams chose!

He implied that it "won't even make it to air", so it might actually be an unused Fast Forward rather than yet another unbalanced Detour

u/Apple_Slipper avatar

He's similar to TAR Canada's Jon Montgomery, as both are athletes.

Phil Keoghan sometimes takes part in the challenges, such as running in high heels.

u/glider521al avatar

The fact that Beau attempts/does all the challenges himself (often humorously) is a huge plus.

So glad the vegans are out. And a 30 minute penalty is far too short. Would be an outrage if they survived.

u/CreswickOctober avatar

It's gonna be fucking fascinating if the Vegans survive a 30 minute penalty and beat out another team

u/Nigel-Ravencroft avatar

Vegan redemption underdog story for the rest of the series. They are so impassioned about the leather industry they become determined to win the money and start a goat sanctuary

u/CreswickOctober avatar

Lol this is hilarious, picture them strolling to the finish line after nailing the final memory task of recalling every animal on the race

I wouldn’t blame the Vegans for the tasks they didn’t complete; the Splash detour appeared to be closed by the time they reached it, meaning they didn’t get a choice in the matter, and by the time they reached the tannery they were probably dead last with no other teams around, and I think it was just edited out of order. Sticking by their principles seemed more reasonable with that challenge than most other quits. They were still the weakest team regardless.

They walked. They didn't run. Of course, they would always be late. It's called The Amazing Race, not the The Amazing Sightseeing.

u/jhutch2147 avatar

It annoys me that they have a team like the Vegans when they are so absolutely useless they are just taking the spot of a team that could actually have a chance at competing…..even last night with the couple that was eliminated you could tell from the outset they had zero chance of getting far in the competition….oh well

There's usually at least a few cannon fodder teams, even in other versions, but at least many of them try too.

u/jhutch2147 avatar

Yeah definitely, always teams you know have no chance of going anywhere…but at least they actually seem to try their best and want to actually compete. This couple has probably been the worst I’ve ever seen

I honestly don't mind, a more diverse cast is better than a hyper competitive game bot cast

u/jhutch2147 avatar

I guess we can agree to disagree, I don’t want everyone to be bots and I like people to be different and diverse, but they should at least want to win since they are on a competition.

u/Apple_Slipper avatar

I agree. This cast has a lot of teams from all walks of life, and they are everyday Aussies.

They could cast the same archetype of characters, but they can run.

Don't cast anyone who is walking slowly to join The Amazing Race. You may not be able to run fast, but at least put some effort. Don't just walk.

u/Apple_Slipper avatar

Well, yeah.

Bren and Anja are a great team for the pantheon of quirky older women

u/CreswickOctober avatar

Sam & Stu's online bio says that Stu drag races in WA and all I can imagine from that is he's a drag queen

Not sure about the actual confessional counts, but after the first two episodes I feel like they cast a lot of F/F teams and gave almost all of them less focus. Couldn't identify some of them yet.

Why does the token religious team always say "God is on our side"? It sounds like an awful way to describe your faith, unless it's a massive in-joke.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't outright mentioned, so I checked the bio for Sam & Alex and they are indeed in the "gay, but not for each other" category.

u/CreswickOctober avatar

Both of these detour tasks look tough, but I think Morse code could be easier?

Although historically it's been an impossible task on amazing race

u/CreswickOctober avatar

Beau pulls a funny face while he demonstrates eating a 2 year old lemon but I'm more curious to know what it tastes like

u/jhutch2147 avatar

I’d rather not know what it tastes like to be honest, it looks horrendous

u/Apple_Slipper avatar

I researched a bit more about pickled lemons. They can be used for medicinal purposes.

Teams changed positions A LOT this episode and there's not much explanation

We can only assume they are all getting lost

u/Apple_Slipper avatar

Here's the summary of TAR Australia S06E02!

  • The show begins with acknowledging the Indigenous people. The second 10 teams start at the Hickson Road Reserve in Sydney, NSW, near the Sydney Opera House.

  • Route Info: Teams fly to Marrakech, Morocco and take a taxi to the Marrakech Markets to find their next clue.

  • Heath & Toni talked about her condition.

  • Route Info: Seize the Clay.
Teams need fit 40 clay pottery pieces onto the cart and then use the cart to steer they way through the markets to a shop vendor. If the number of pottery is correct, to receive their next clue.

  • Stu: "The mullets weren't looking as hot as they usually do."

  • Crystal & Reem told Bren & Anja to get their clue.

  • Detour: Dash or Splash?
Dash: Teams must head to Lantern Alley and figure out the flashing lanterns in Morse Code. Once the code has been correctly solved, teams will receive their next clue.
Splash: Teams must find six water sellers throughout the market. Dressed in coloured costumes and tassels, they must count the number of goatskin tar-lined bags on each water seller. If the number is correct, teams will find the next clue.

  • No one chose the Dash Detour.

  • Sam & Alex accidentally broke several pottery pieces.

  • Crystal & Reem have the advantage of knowing the Arab language.

  • Chace has the advantage of learning French.

  • Roadblock: Who's Best in a Pickle?
Teams make their way to a lemon store to consume the lemon pickles (6 month, 1 year, and 2 years) in order to receive their next clue. But first, they must head to Hotel Cecil to sign up. First to sign up will get a time advantage.

  • Bren & Anja takes a 30-minute time penalty for being too late to the Detour.

  • Heath: "This is nothing like peanut butter!"

  • Alex: "Who thought a lemon could be so dangerous?"

  • Route Info: Hide & Bleat
Teams will head to the Bab Debbagh leather tannery to rinse the skin off the hides in a mixture made out of animal excrement and iferd. Once teams rinse the skins to make hides, they will receive mint to stop the smell and receive their next clue.

  • Sam & Stu asks for directions from the locals.

  • Pitstop: Teams make their way to the Koutoubia Mosque Gardens. The last team to check in WILL be eliminated.

  • Lauren & Steph worked in situations that are similar, so they handled the stench quite well.

  • Bren & Anja came to a dilemma regarding the leather tannery. They decided to quit the challenge.

  • Angel & Frankie won 1st Place.

  • Kathy & Chace (2nd Place).

  • Sam (Sam & Stu): "Gettin' nice and dirty!"

  • Lauren & Steph (3rd Place).

  • Crystal & Reem (4th Place).

  • Heath & Toni (5th Place).

  • Alex: "Looks like my bedroom before my mum cleaned it!"

  • Sam & Alex (6th Place).

  • Bren & Anja found an injured bird along the way to the Pitstop.

  • A dog chases alongside Sam & Stu.

  • Sam & Stu (7th Place).

  • Stuart & Glennon (8th Place).

  • Morgan & Lilli (9th Place).

  • Stuart & Glennon talks about inspiring First Nations people to achieve big.

  • Bren & Anja arrived in Last Place and are eliminated.

  • Next Episode: The first 9 teams will meet up with the second 9 teams in Morocco, as they compete against each other.

I see. But when I mean "near", was that the Opera House was in the background.

I checked on Google Earth from the camera shots. It is indeed the Hickson Road Reserve Park underneath the Harbour Bridge.

Is pottery cart the first switchback task for TAR Aus?

u/Apple_Slipper avatar

Possibly. I can't remember the season that pottery switchback task appeared in.

But for the tannery task, that is a task based on TAR USA Season 25 Episode 5. Season 25 is a fantastic season.

u/CreswickOctober avatar

TAR Aus season 2 I think they had a very similar pottery cart challenge

There have been a lot of "how's that rip" moments on tonight's episode, it almost seems like an inside joke between the teams

u/jhutch2147 avatar

I remember it on last season too….it’s pretty odd, even last nights episode had it too.

u/Apple_Slipper avatar

Yep. Past TAR racers (Jobelle and Sefa) commented about that feeling of ripping open the clues.

This was quite the interesting leg and a pretty good one in recent franchise seasons (including TARAUS5, TARCAN8 and US33) in my opinion. This leg put back the intensity and culture-ness we've missed in a long while.

  • This time the $250,000 got the bigger chants as compared to the last episode

  • Interesting observation it seems like every team is packing way too much and all have large backpacks

  • Feels weird with this concept/twist - having two different groups of teams doing separate and most importantly, different legs with different tasks seems not 'fair' as this episode felt more intense and action-packed than last leg which seemed more laidback.

  • Clay Stacking/Hauling Route Info Task: I liked the strictness of the rule to haul all 40 pots. Having that rule made teams be very careful and focus on getting all 40 as oppose to doing a lighter load/more trips as what Crystal & Reem did. The US and Canada season would've allowed this.

  • Again, this episode, no team did the Dash side. I think that was a creative side but sad no team completed it.

  • Splash Detour: It seemed like the first batch of teams didn't knew what to look for until they saw the Lawyer Cousins found one which shows how the show didn't want to make it easy for teams to know who the water people were. I liked the intensity of this side with the men constantly on the move and trying to make it a chaotic situation. The use of the calculators were a bit not fun though and should've been a mental math situation.

  • Didn't like the bunching with the hotel bit but understandable considering how it was late night for the first half of this leg.

  • Pickled Lemon Road Block: This was a great challenge. The smaller size for the younger one and the larger size for the older one was super awesome and well thought-out. I think the Heath is still gagging to this day...

  • Tannery Route Info Task: Throwback to the last time the US season visited Morocco. Very procedural task, immersed in one of the things Morocco is known for and the obvious, put teams out of their norms factor was great.

  • Again, similar to last episode, the Vegan Warriors' penalty was horrendous. Only 30-minutes which it should've been 2-hours similar to how TARCAN does sitting out ARI tasks. This was lame outside of their whole distractions and slowness this episode... Glad they got booted.

Very interesting teams here. I liked this leg but not excited for the race to combine next episode. They should have kept them separate for a bit longer. 18 teams at once is too many

u/CreswickOctober avatar

Yeah definitely feels different tonight

How many guesses are the teams allowed for the counting tasks? Must be some sort of limit

u/Apple_Slipper avatar

Sam & Stu, Kathy & Chace, and Bren & Anja interestingly taking the pickled lemons quite well.

u/812gnj avatar

The past two legs probably the most sensorial legs in any TAR since the pandemic. On one end it feels great to have the series feel like it's back to normal, (considering the US version will again do a Eurotrip for the next season, and don't get me started on Canada) on the other end, the chaos of the first 2 legs feels quite a sensory overload... and a health risk even.

The tasks, and scenery, though not something we'd expect - were more cultural than say (and it's a welcome change) to almost every leg in TAR33 shot during the pandemic, and TAR CAN 8, or TAR AUS 5 which focused a lot on tasks that were themed more into the adventure or an obstacle course side of things (well given the pandemic, every single place visited felt like mountains, rivers, and valleys)

As for the penalties though, I do think there's something more behind the scenes about it than just a "30 minute penalty" I just hope the show expounds more of that.

u/mug3n avatar

I've been to Morocco and god I was on a rooftop in a tannery and even from a few floors away, the stench just overwhelmed my nostrils. Can't imagine what it's like actually being in the pits.

This leg had much harder tasks compared to the first leg.

u/Money_Bed5641 avatar

The only thing I don't think I like about TARAUS is the time penalties for not doing tasks, WAY too short, I feel like they are less time than actually doing them sometimes.

u/Apple_Slipper avatar

I agree. Should’ve been at least two hours time penalty.

Of the first two legs, I think the first was more interesting: More puzzles + a film obstacle course v.s. sensory endurance challenges (in what otherwise seems like a slightly easier course on leg 2).

Angel and Frankie's sentence "we're not here to make friends" sentence, put a chill down my spine.

Edited

Enjoyed the episode! Maybe unpopular opinion but I preferred yesterday's group of teams. They seemed more inoffensive and considering I absolutely loved S19, I think that's more my thing.

The tasks seemed harder this leg! Disappointed nobody chose the morse code, since on TV it looked a lot easier. Also I found the position changes here way more unexplained than yesterday, but it probably ultimately came down to just being lost lol

They should extend the penalty time. Did Angel and Frankie not get a prize or did I miss that? Weird if not, since the teachers got something. And loved it when the dog came along with the mullets to the Pit Stop!

My favourites from this batch are definitely Crystal and Reem and Heath and Toni, and I like the Baru mates, the blondes, the mullets, and the cops as well.

Tomorrow's gonna be chaos with the 18 teams and I can't wait. It's bound to happen to a few, but hopefully they won't shaft a lot of teams from the edit.

u/Apple_Slipper avatar

Angel & Frankie did not get a prize for 1st Place there.

u/CreswickOctober avatar

I can't remember a prize for first place tonight either

Last night's prize was a weekend away to Mornington Peninsula lol

Agree. Of my 4 favourite teams, 3 are from last night. Morgan & Lilli, Kelly & Georgia, Fliis & Tottie, Tammy & Vincent.

Did anyone do the Morse code detour? That seemed a lot easier than trying to count cups on six moving people.

As with episode one the challenges were pretty boring and as far as disgusting foods go, I reckon a picked Lemon is pretty mild.

If you asked me to picture a stereotypical vegan, the vegan team in this episode are basically it. While I appreciate they have good principles was it really that hard for them to do the challenge? No big loss either way. Not that the other teams are particularly interesting either. 20 teams and most of them seem to have nothing that would make me keep watching. Nice enough but I don't particularly care who wins

u/OrnaciaWasRobbedMom avatar

Ok like the vegans deserved to go home but they were completely set up by production to go home. You know putting them in the group with the tannery task would cause them to quit, why not put them in the other group and let them have an actual chance

With the pottery hauling task, did Crystal & Reem get penalised for asking 2 locals to carry the cart for them? If not, they definitely should have!

u/Apple_Slipper avatar

I don't think Crystal & Reem got a penalty for that.

That was definitely an oversight! Totally not fair.
