My Dream off-season for our ATL Hawks

discussion

Draft Night trade:

ATL RECEIVES: A 20 mil exception 2nd round Pick or Kenrich Williams

OKC RECEIVES:

Danilo Gallinari 2nd Round Pick

Or Waive Him

2nd trade that night:

HAWKS RECEIVES: Josh Hart 7th Pick

POR RECEIVES: John Collins 16 Pick in the draft

We do this deal to get money for FA and Unload Gallos contract. Then we get defense and a pick in the lottery,I think as Hawks fans we need to realize JCs value ain’t much

Draft:Hawks select Dyson Daniels at pick 7, Hawks select Jaylin Williams

They do this to get a good defender in Daniels,And get a Glue Guy like Jaylin Williams.

SnT:

HAWKS RECEIVE: Deandre Ayton Jae Crowder

SUNS RECEIVE: Clint Capela Kevin Huerter CHARLOTTES 23 PICK

We do this to get a future star in Ayton and get a good 3nD player.

FA:

HAWKS SIGN OR RESIGN: Kyle Anderson Gorgui Dieng Chaunde Brown Skyler Mays Teddy Allen(Undrafted Rookie) Sharife Cooper (Idk bout this one)

We do this to build a bench and Fill the roster.

EXTENSIONS: Deandre Hunter 55 M-4 Years

We do this to secure Hunter from going into FA.

ROTATION: Trae Hart Hunter Crowder Ayton

BENCH: Dyson Bogdan (need his bench scoring) Anderson Johnson Okongwu

This in my head would be a W off-season for the hawks.

I like the step by step. Can I give a little feedback?

The first trade generates a $3Mish (after subtracting Kenrich's amt) exception, not a $20M one, IIRC. Regardless, it generates no cap space, just room for the S&T.

Third one doesn't quite work. I think you'd have to move Huerter to a 3rd team, but that pick would incentivize. I do think Saric or Craig would be more likely than Jae.

On Hunter -- I think that value is close but don't think he'll agree to it...

OKC is still under this year ('21-'22) whose figures still hold until after the July Moratorium. They now have ~$87M committed of the $112.4M committed.

I can't figure out if Gallo's incoming salary in a deal would be $5M or $21M but it doesn't matter for this discussion. Even at the $21M figure, that only brings them to $109M so there's plenty of head room there.

OKC was an over the cap team for next season regardless of the Green trade btw. They have too many cap holds and the SGA extension kicking in.

They could give us kenrich

Why would OKC do that?

u/Other-Vanilla-2915 avatar

Hawks and OKC have already talked about moving Gallo to OKC

I’d rather select Dyson Daniels and Jalen Duren if we’re going to keep Hunter and move Collins.

If we move Hunter, no problem selecting both Daniels and Williams. I don’t want a log jam at the wing spots again.

If you draft Duren you punt on OO.

u/carrythekindness avatar

Or punt on Capela. I think we’d get more back for Capela and I think OO will continue to get better and improve his shooting

That is technically possible, but it wouldn’t happen. You don’t want two centers that are that young. Literally never happens for a reason.

u/carrythekindness avatar

I think OO can be a 4. Dude said he was going to develop a jumpshot and I believe him.

This sub overrates Hunter pretty consistently but anything close to 4yr-55M would be an incredible deal

u/Traeday11 avatar

Definitely not a roster improvement move for next year Building again for the future(which might not be bad.). This is the opposite of a consolidation trade for a star. Just seems like a waste of time for us to not have traded collins earlier if all we get now is a salary unload

u/piercegardner avatar

That suns trade would never happen

They don't keep OO if they swing something for Ayton.

u/Other-Vanilla-2915 avatar

They keep OO Atl only giving Clint

u/thestallion11 avatar

In your scenario they’ll keep OO but in reality if we get a new high end Center then they will probably trade him. You don’t pick a young lottery talent to have him play limited back up minutes. They’d probably move him for a wing or something

u/Other-Vanilla-2915 avatar

Or he could play pf

u/thestallion11 avatar

That’s Always an option but he was drafted as a 5 , I don’t think they’d change his position. The interior defense of OO and someone like Ayton would be really good but on offense It would be a mess unless OO turned into JC 2.0. Which in that case just keep JC

Theres no way hunter extends for less than 25 mil per. Definitely not under 20mil per. Hes a 2 way wing with borderline elite defense its literally the most desired player archetype in the league. He has some limitations in his game rn, but we are gonna have to pay to keep him.

Hunter isn’t getting $25M or even $20M a year. He doesn’t provide borderline elite defense. Outside of the first 20 games of the 20/21 season where he shot out of his mind in the midrange, he’s been a very mediocre player. Right now he shouldn’t be extended for anything more than what Huerter got. More than likely both parties should give it one more year unless Hunter accepts the Huerter terms.

u/Mykal22 avatar

He provided elite defense last year in the playoffs. At the very least hes a really good defender with flashes of elite defense. He shot 37% from 3 this year on almost 4 attempts and is averaging 36% on 4 attempts for his career. When hes aggressive he has shown that he can create his own shot off the dribble. He has been inconsistent, lacked aggression, and injured, but this is literally the archetype of player everyone in the league is looking for. We will have to pay to keep him because someone else will overpay to get him if we dont. I would be extremely happy if we extended him for less than john.

I wanted to do 60-65 but I thought 55 was fair

Well, to figure out someone’s paycheck you have to compare to others similar to him, in either play style or situation and:

Kevin Heurter is making 4/65 Duncan Robinson is making 5/90 Harrison Barnes is making 4/85 THJ is making 4/75

So I’d assume Deandre Hunter will be offered somewhere in that range, and wouldn’t expect him to agree to any less. Also this isn’t even considering him not agreeing to a contract and betting on himself ala John Collins. In which case he could make significantly more in RFA.

OKC isn’t trading Williams unless they are getting a first. He’s on a very cheap $2 M contract which allows any team over the cap to fit them in their salary cap this year and extend using his Bird rights. That’s a pretty valuable piece for the right teams given his role playing ability.

Gallo has a negative value now. He’s only really valuable for the Hawks to get a large contract for him coming back. I don’t think there is a team in the league that wouldn’t decline his last year option if they got him in a trade. Unless a team has a longer term contract that they want to move out of in the $20M range (or part of a larger package), Hawks will need to move assets to get off him.
