I remember when the first season aired I was kind of lackluster about the series, stopped watching halfway through. Then I heard it would be an anthology show and the second season hit. It had everything I wanted, great sets, actors, storylines, practical effects.
Now it kind of feels like they used up every cool idea they could think up in this season. Aliens, Nazis, Santa, monsters, possession, serial killers, 60s mental hospital with the terror of the time fully realized. Sure, it went off the deep end a few times but it keeps the atmosphere and tension going right to the end. And damn it got some amazing performances from everyone, especially Jessica Lange in probably her greatest role which, considering her amazing career, is impressive.
It’s a real shame they leaned into camp for much of the subsequent seasons. There are some great moments in Hotel and Roanoke but mostly the storylines fall apart and they focus more on style and cheesy homages than the insane level of quality they put into Asylum. But season two stands alone as a great addition to horror television, and maybe that’s enough.
