i5-8400 vs AMD Ryzen 5 2600X?

I've seen a lot of discussion on the differences between the i5-8400 and Ryzen 5 2600, but in Australia the i5-8400 shares a price bracket with the Ryzen 5 2600X.

If I'm going to be using my build mostly for gaming, with less emphasis on video editing/processing etc., is it still more worthwhile to go for the i5-8400 over the 2600X?

I'm replacing my old i5-4400 which has served me for a good 5 years, I'm aiming for a replacement to last a similar amount of time. I'm most likely also going to upgrade the gpu to a 1070ti/1080, and aiming for 1440p, 144 Hz.

I'm selling a 2600x , used, with box and stock cooler.

The cooler has never been mounted (I always used a higher end aftermarket cooler)

Have been using it since Nov 2018. Used in a gaming ring.

$150 CAD (shipping cost not included)

AMD Ryzen 5 2600X VS. AMD Ryzen 7 1800X

I'm looking to build a PC soon and I'm stuck between the Ryzen 5 2600x and Ryzen 7 1800x. They both are about the same price, (Ryzen 7 is about $30 on pcpartpicker) but is the Ryzen 7 worth it as an upgrade to the Ryzen 5 or am I better off saving the money? What would be the performance difference between the two?

AMD Ryzen 5 2600X Review: Spectre Patches Weigh In

Toms hardware Review of the 2600X - with patches applied this time - shows Spectre hitting Intel hard in some applications.

Although we didn't see much performance variation from the patches in our game testing, that changes drastically in our Adobe Creative Cloud suite. Every Intel processor's overall score takes a significant haircut (the Core i7-8700K drops ~9%, while the Core i5-8400 drops ~10%).

AMD Ryzen 5 2600X going past 4.33GHz on single core and above 4.23Ghz on all 6 cores! This result is insane for me

AMD Ryzen 5 2600X going past 4.33GHz on single core and above 4.23Ghz on all 6 cores! This result is insane for me

I had some fun overclocking with my Ryzen 5 2600X yesterday. I had confirmation that a manual overclock is pointless and actually worse than XFR+PBO doing it's job. I also have a Gigabyte Aorus B450 Pro which is a great mid range motherboard but not the best for overclocking

I couldn't go past 4125MHz no matter what voltage. Keeping fixed 4125MHz needed 1368mV and temperatures with my Cryorig H7 went as high as 75°C which is not comfortable for me single core also was impacted negatively. By just activating XFR+PBO with a negative undervolt of -90mV the frequency on 6 cores was between 4125Mhz and 4150MHz while single core peaks at 4250MHz.

I've always had considered my chip "golden" because it only needs 1320mV to keep 4100MHz on 6 cores stable. With XFR+PBO it maintains almost constant 41.25x multiplier on 6 cores loads and frequently spiking to 41.50x but also keeps 1-2 cores loads with a 42.25x and spikes to 42.50x multiplier which is above the average 2600X. RAM is 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance Led @ 3000MHz C16. Unstable with frequency at 3100MHz or 3000MHz but C15.

I never played around with the FSB (or BCLK) before, I heard it can mess up the SSD, GPU or PCIe devices. Yesterday I tried raising it anyway.

BLCK at 101MHz no problem, passed 2+ hours of Prime95 blend test. Tried 103MHz but the PC wouldn't even boot, the mobo flashed RAM and CPU leds like crazy. Then I tried 102MHz and it seemed to work. I left the PC overnight for more than 12 hours doing Prime95 blend test... and I had 0 errors and 0 warnings which looked incredible. Max temperature reached was only 71°C which is impressive for a 40€ air cooler. RAM also went from 3000MHz to 3060MHz which is not much but indeed helpful.

I then ran Cinebench R20 benchmark, score is not significantly higher but still really good.

https://preview.redd.it/vg0kea7v8xf41.png

I have the following frequencies while benchmarking and gaming:

1-2 cores frequency before 4216MHz average 4241MHz maximum
6 cores frequency before 4116MHz average 4141MHz maximum
1-2 cores frequency now 4309MHz average 4335MHz maximum
6 cores frequency now 4208MHz average 4234MHz maximum
RAM frequency 3000MHz before 3060MHz now

I would've never expected these results, it really surprised me. Maybe the performance gain is not that significant but seeing a Ryzen 2600X going past 4.2GHz on 6 cores and 4.3GHz on single core is so nice. Some people would I can't call it stable just because it passed almost 13 hours in Prime95 because you need to leave it a couple of days to be sure... well I have no time and patience for that and I rarely do heavy 3D or video editing, I mostly do programming and gaming doesn't take you 100% of CPU. This will indeed help for gaming and compiling code where the frequency is still very important at least as much as core count.

I am really happy with the results, sorry for the endless long post but I'm so excited!
