Is it alright to jump right into All Quiet on the Western Front (2022)?

I want to watch it before the Oscars, and I’m aware that people find it inferior to both the book and the movie from the 20s. I’m just curious if it’s better to watch the Netflix one without any prior knowledge of the work or watch the first movie first. Thank you.

What’s the deal with All Quiet on the Western Front?

All Quiet on the Western Front might be the most bizarre awards season phenomenon in recent memory.

This movie was just the BAFTA nomination leader, pulling 14 noms including Picture and Director. That should make it a serious Oscar contender.

And yet it made absolutely zero splash at the Globes or the CCAs. It couldn’t even win International Feature at either of those shows. This movie didn’t play in theaters, has basically no critical buzz (according to Metacritic, it wasn’t even one of the 30 films most frequently included on Critics’ year-end list), and isn’t from a filmmaker who’s particularly well-known outside of Germany. If it weren’t for its surprising muscle in the Awards race, I’m not sure I would have even really heard about it.

So how is this movie seemingly such a strong industry contender? It performed really well on the Oscar longlists too. Is Netflix just campaigning it really effectively?

What’s going on?? I’m scared!!

All Quiet On The Western Front (2022)

If you can get a chance to see All Quiet On The Western Front in theaters you should definitely do it. It’s a fantastic film and I really think most people who don’t have a dedicated home theater won’t get the full effect of this film.

I see this getting at the minimum an Oscar nomination for Best International Feature.

All Quiet On The Western Front

Just finished the book. Very impressive how it describes the suffering of soldiers in the trenches of WW1. Besides the warfare, the lack of food, the rat plague, the endless mud etc (the writer has served there himself).

Also just last night saw the movie with the same name (2022 version), but that was a big disappointment. Besides that the movie leaves part out, introduces new story lines that are not in the book, it's also full of errors. A truck convoy near the front drives at night with full lights on.. lights that are also way stronger than they had at the time...after the peace signing all German soldiers go home WITH their weapons.. the tanks at that time were heavily armoured but engines still had little power so these things were slow and clumsy and often got bogged down. In the movie they go over the battle field like WW2 tanks... a french officer wears an American pistol (with some fantasy still possible), but not the short barrel version that didn't exist at the time yet...the Germans main rifle in WW1 was the Mauser K98 that I have shot often because a friend of mine owned one. These things have a very strong recoil, way more than modern war rifles. But in this movie they shoot them all like air rifles 🤣 And a ton more. Can't believe this movie has so many Oscar nominations (second most).
