Director/screenwriter Joe Mankiewicz' best, the back-stabbing, back-stage story boasts superb actors playing great characters: Bette Davis as Margo Channing, Anne Baxter as Eve Harrington, Thelma Ritter as Birdie, George Sanders as Addison DeWitt, Marilyn Monroe as Miss Caswell, and many more. "Fasten your seat-belts, it's going to be a bumpy night!"

I had heard of All About Eve by reputation only, so I went into it not knowing what to expect. The opening seemed to drag, so I was sceptical for a bit, but then Karen's first memories of Eve started up and I was hooked.

I definitely wasn't expecting as well written and brilliant acted film as there was. Each of the characters had wonderful depth and dimensions. Bette Davis was incredible as the conflicted and troubled Margo Channing and Anne Baxter did wonders with Eve. it takes a special actress to pull off that level of charm and innocence, and yet give hints as to what lies underneath it all.

(I've tagged this as spoilers - I've tried avoid them here, but it's probably inevitable they'll turn up in the comment section)

All About Eve (1950)

'Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night'

I just finished Joseph L. Mankiewicz's 1950s classic All About Eve and I absolutely loved this movie. I was just in awe of how good the writing in this film was, there are KILLER lines. So sharp, so witty and sophisticated. This is such a tight screenplay; it's funny I found myself actually coming out of the movie, out of the immersion, to mentally comment on how good the writing was lol. I just thoroughly enjoyed the movie.

The acting is wonderful and perfectly weighted in terms of its drama - not descending into melodrama whilst still sticking to its truth, namely that these are people of the theater and as such their behavior reflects that - these are thespians and they talk and act as such. I love it but again, not melodramatic, it's just the right balance. Kudos to Makiewicz and all of the cast, shout out to Bette Davis man.

One thing about the direction also, with the emphasis on deep focus in classic Hollywood there comes a similar emphasis on blocking and movement of actors and of course mise en scene but I do wonder why deep focus had the power it did and why it's not en vogue anymore? I personally think it's a lost art, being able to block with respect to the entire frame and its constituents is a masterstroke so i'm just wondering what you guys think about deep focus in cinema or lack thereof.

Films like this make me happy that I love cinema

All About Eve (1950)- An aging Broadway actress Margo Channing (played brilliantly by Bette Davis) employs her number one fan, Eve Harrington, as her assistant. But there is more to Eve than meets the eye.

I've watched it about 50 times and i'm always astonished by the dialogue. This movie is a perfect example of how a great script is important...so many wittty lines...not ONE SINGLE SENTENCE IS JUST THROWN AWAY. And I'm not talking about the "Fasten your seatbelts" one...there are so many witty lines that I can't even begin. And let's not forget that Marilyn Monroe already showed her chops in this, her first movie.

It's just sad that Bette Davis, perhaps the greatest of them, didn't benefit from this. Apparently after this movie her career went back to obscurity. She deserved better.
