Alice in Borderland

Good storytelling, unique characters, and more exciting games may all be found in Alice in Borderland. Although it has an anime feel to it as it is based on the manga. Any thoughts?

After watching Squid Game and absolutely loving it, I decided to watch Alice in Borderland, a Japanese show based on a manga, that is similar to Squid Game in many ways.

ALICE IN BORDERLAND SPOILER HEAVY

First episode was great, and had me excited to watch the next episode. But as it went on it got worse and worse, in absolutely all aspects.

In short, three teenagers(?) in Tokyo find themself all alone as it seems all people have suddenly disappeared. Then they are supposed to play "games" to earn visa days, and will die to a laser from the sky if their visa expires.

Here are a tiny fraction of the problems with Alice in Borderland:

• Almost every game is finished in the very last second. Come on now, at least make a few of them different.

• Why burn down the Beach building? The goddamn cards in there, or at least that's what everybody thinks they are.

• Why are there only young people at Beach, do they only welcome the attractive young people there?

• Why hunt for food when there are many supermarkets around with tons of canned food?

• Why sleep in a tent in the middle of the street when there are tons of houses with multiple rooms?

• How can someone outrun a mass amount of free flowing water in a tunnel?

• How did the bus pass the section of the tunnel where there was cars everywhere and the path was blocked? (Not even gonna talk about how the bus drifted to a stop and they saved Usagi)

• How can someone go face to face with a lion with no weapons and be the winner of the fight? The dude literally PUNCHED a 200kg animal away while it was running at him full speed. You don't even see this in anime.

• In the last episode there's this scene when the crazy bald dude with the tattoos is fighting the girl and when the girl karate kicks the guy it seems like she barely pushed him off but at the very next scene it's shown that the bald dude is sent flying away. I rewatched that scene multiple times I couldn't believe my eyes how bad editing I was seeing.

• Totally unnecessary sex scene which contributes nothing to the story.

• Let's run after these cars going full speed on foot, we'll definitely catch them, wait why are we chasing them again?

• Extremely cliche dialogues and characters.

• Going into the games you can tell which characters are gonna die and which ones are gonna survive, it's simply too predictable

• Extremely cringey "anime like" over the top acting which works great on anime characters but not on human actors.

• The unimportant side characters (the ones we know are gonna die) make decisions that are frustratingly idiotic and have 0 logical thinking behind them.

• While the massacre is happening, the forensics lady manages to dissolve super glue and get finger prints from the murder scene. What next? Go ask everyone for their fingerprints?

• Crazy bald dude goes from a loner living in his room to a samurai sword master in a few weeks

• Extremely stereotypical characters

I could literally go on for a whole day. I genuinely do not understand the high reviews. Maybe teenagers who see themself as the protagonist give high ratings after watching the first episode? If you are over 14, then you will be disappointed. If you are under 14, this show is for you.

It is extremely offensive to compare Squid Game to this joke of a show.

Currently on ep 3 but, FINALLY!!! I love that they're showing us more background about the players, and hopefully more about the "world" they're playing in while still maintaining the action and suspense of the series.

EDIT 1: So basically everyone this season is like "is this how you wanna live?" or "What is your purpose for living?" They're full of existential angst fr!!

EDIT 2: ok FINAL THOUGHTS... I just finished it, and what the fuck was that final 2 episodes 😭 It was a lot to take in. BUT THAT ENDING THOUGH!!! Might leave a room for another season? Hehe

I wanted to make a post in honor of the new season coming out.

I adored the first season and binged it all the way through. Sad how kinda underrated it is considering I don’t see many people talk about it. I think it deserves the same hype that squid games got

If you liked Squid Game, you will probably also enjoy Alice in Borderland, it has the 'throw people in a game which could kill you' theme, just like Squid Game.

I just don’t get it Alice in borderland is 10 times better than squid game (plot, actors, the world etc..), yet squid game has better views / money making.. strange world we live in.

Just finished the first episode. Not sure what to think yet. Is it worth watching? Reminds me a lot of Squid Games. What do you guys think?

Just finished season 2, absolutely phenomenal and equally as entertaining as season 1.

As someone who doesn’t speak any Japanese, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m so sad I have nothing to watch now.

I thought the storyline was amazing and the scenery was incredibly realistic of Japan. If anyone has any other suggestions for similarly suspenseful and action packed shows, I’m all ears! Or even Japanese shows as I’d love to continue to watch to try and pick up some phrases.

I might be super late to the game, but this show is incredible. I, personally, think it’s a better story than Squid Game. Highly recommend it. Excellent script, characters, and cinematography.

Just like what the title says & I know I'm late to the party but I've just recently managed to watch Alice in Borderland & despite only took me 2 nights to finish it, I actually enjoyed it. I'll admit it did had some dark moments but if anyone is looking for something new to watch or is interested in watching foreign movies/tv shows, especially stuff from Japan, South Korea, etc but hasn't seen the show yet then I recommended it + bring on season 2. Also I'm not sure how to describe the show but the best way I could describe it is if you guys have read or seen the Hunger Games then imagine what the Hunger Games would be like if it's based in a big city & based around gaming.
