That Alex Garland PSA Interview Was Terrible

I don’t blame Jon for this doozy, because Garland’s movie is in the news and it’s a film partially about political polarization (a motif on Crooked and in our national politics). Jon couldn’t have known Garland would be so wrong and insufferable and obtuse throughout the interview. But man,

1.) No, the American progressive Left is not as extreme as the MAGA Right. That zombie lie and conventional wisdom idiocy has helped normalize and lend credibility to fascistic leaders like Trump, DeSantis, and other modern Republicans. MTG is not as extreme or crazy or bad as AOC, full stop. Have progressives stormed the Capitol to stop a free and fair election? Have they banned books in public libraries? Did they overturn Roe? Have they effectively criminalized protest and other First Amendment protections?

2.) No, centrism for centrism’s sake is not noble or brave or a political life hack. It’s banal, vapid, and feckless to take the median position between the ideological Left and Right merely because of a reactionary urge to “bridge the divide”…especially given the Overton Window has shifted so far to the ideological Right on recent years (whether it concerns science, LBGTQ equality, racial justice, etc). What is the median position on anthropogenic climate change? To admit it’s happening but do nothing about it? What about the median ground on reproductive rights? A soft abortion ban of 12 or 15 weeks and only 50% of contraceptives on the market can restricted by states? Ban five books instead of 10?

3.) I was also appalled with Hillary’s “basket of deplorables” comment from several years ago (that and the coal mining comments didn’t help her chances)…but guess what? She wasn’t totally wrong. The Trump cultists who avidly supported him in 2015/16 and still do to this day are very likely racist, xenophobic, homophobic, anti-vax, or something else that should be socially unacceptable in the year 2024. At this late date, if you still support Trump, I think it’s fair to say you’re some kind or flavor of bigot (or woefully, awfully misinformed). If I were Garland, I wouldn’t brag about having Trumpist friends in the year of our lord 2024. I have family members and friends who voted for Trump, but the ones I still respect have since realized the man is a fraud and con artist and a criminal. My uncle is still diehard MAGA, and guess what? I don’t respect his opinions on politics, and I don’t have to.

4.) Fascism is inherently a right-wing ideology, and has never been left-wing or progressive-leaning in any way throughout human history. Left-wing authoritarianism and tyranny are real and have existed and are very not good, but that’s not fascism or what fascism means. I studied political science for several years and that’s just reality.

Dude just don’t seem up this moment in American politics, or is wildly naive or misinformed about said moment.

Alex Garland’s Civil War Discussion
false

Last night i was blessed with the opportunity to see Civil War early at a theater near me. This film, in my opinion, this is one of the most impactful war films I’ve seen to date. Although the film concludes with a somewhat unsatisfying and upsetting ending, I think that just further proves how the film depicts the harsh realities of war. The film spends most of its time focusing on the humanity of war and how people’s mental states and innocence crumbles at the hands of it. Through the use of polaroids and flashes of photographs captured by the journalists, the film shows some of the most disturbing and upsetting imagery that I’ve seen in recent memory, and plants the idea into your head that this reality isn’t too far off from our own. The cinematography and combat sequences are another spectacle on their own, as they felt more real than any action I’ve seen on screen before. Great film overall, I’d give it a 8.5/10. Would love to hear others inputs, as this is my favorite movie of 2024 so far.

Why did Men (2022) by Alex Garland got so many bad reviews?

I was surprised to see that many (not all of them, obviously) gave the movie a bad review, accompanied of comments of the tone of: “this seems like a parody of an A24 film” or “this movie tries to portrait women’s problems from a male perspective”.

Sure, the movie was over the top, weird and grotesque (it is an A24 horror movie at the end of the day… lots of them are known to be strange), but I thought it was an original (I had never seen something such as the final act), innovative as well as very creepy movie that made me feel very uncomfortable (which I don’t usually feel with horror movies).

What do you think of the movie and why do you think that it was so criticized?

Alex Garland is such a good Sci-Fi Writer and Director

I recently watched Ex Machina and Annihilation both written and directed by Alex Garland and...WOW ; both films were amazing. Both had me on the edge of my seat. I feel Ex Machina is such an underrated film, especially in todays time.

Took me some time to process Annihilation, but damn it got me shook afterwards, especially certain scenes and shots stuck in my head.

(Another director I can think of is Robert Eggers, with his Horror/Thriller films - especially The Lighthouse)
