Aldrick Rosas (NYG) is the best unowned kicker

With 9.2 fantasy points per week in standard scoring, that puts him at the 6th best kicker on the year. He has made every extra point while only missing 1 field goal all season. Since the bye, he is averaging 11.5 points per game (last 4 games). Finally, he has a great week 15 and 16 schedule for the fantasy playoffs, where he faces off against Ten and Ind, respectively.

In ESPN leagues, he is still less than 10% owned. If you haven’t found yourself a kicker for the playoffs, this is definitely the man to pick up.

Aldrick Rosas.

So, Aldrick Rosas was arrested yesterday after (allegedly) T-boning a car at 100 mph, at 8:30am, and subsequently taking off. Rosas has a suspended license too, apparently. According to the TMZ article, the cops suspected that Rosas was under the influence of alcohol. Hopefully, the driver of the pick-up truck he rammed into is alive and receiving proper treatment. We know in the NFL, teams are willing to look the other way if the player is talented enough and is producing. That's why Joe Mixon, Tyreek Hill, and Kareem Hunt for example are still having opportunities in the league. Do I agree with that? No, but everyone has a different moral compass.

Rosas does not have that leash. His rookie year (2017), he made 18/25 (72%) of his field goals and 20/23 (87%) of his extra points. It wasn't amazing, but one can chalk it up to rookie growing pains. His second year though, he was absolutely dominant. The Southern Oregon man was able to make 32/33 (97%) field goals, and 31/32 (96.9%) of his extra points, in route to a Pro Bowl appearance and 2nd team All-Pro honors. In the 2019 NFL season, the Giants were hoping that Rosas would grow from his second season, but instead, he came crashing down. His numbers most closely resembled his rookie year, with 12/17 (70.6%) field goals made, and 35/39 (89.7%) extra points made. Needless to say, he has been very inconsistent and an inconsistent kicker will not keep his job for long.

Did his mental health play a role in this? Maybe.

Rosas seems like a guy that allows the noise to get to him. During an interview with Patricia Traina (via Forbes) after his spotty first season, he said he had to "grow up" and understand that "things would not always go right." He was definitely fighting against some demons and that certainly affected his performance, especially in such a mental position such as kicker.

Being motivated by the birth of his daughter, Rosas went on to have an amazing second season. Then, his mess of a third season took place. The criticism, the threat of losing his job, among other things definitely got to his head. Ideally, he would just ignore the noise and keep working on his craft. But his decision-making was not the best in this situation. This job was his to lose - all he had to do was work on his mental and kicking skills, and keep his eye on the prize. What Rosas did was stupid and will probably cost him his job. We all know he has the talent - he needs to go and squash those demons once and for all before he succeeds in this league.

What does that mean for the Giants?

Joe Judge needs to set the tone. He is being patient with DeAndre Baker, but does Aldrick Rosas get that same treatment? His ass might be saved due to the lack of options available in the league. According to Spotrac, FA kickers available include: Gostowski, Succop, Vinatieri, Nick Folk, and Jonathan Brown. Brown has never played a regular season game in the NFL. Vinatieri is definitely cooked - he looked terrible last year, and at 47, he should probably retire. Gostkowski has history with Judge but he didn't look too good with New England before he got cut. Nick Folk was actually Gostkowski's replacement and he was alright. But they decided to go with that kid from Marshall Justin Rohrwasser. Succop was hurt all season, but at 33 I think he has a little more in the tank than others.

What do you think happens?
