Airplane! (1980)

The humour featured in Airplane could have been groan-worthy in the wrong hands. But what could've been cringy becomes hilarious thanks to the execution and the actors involved.

The plot revolves around a traumatic soldier, Ted Striker (Robert Hays), who boards a flight to make amends with his girlfriend, Elaine Dickinson (Julie Hagerty). However, due to a food poisoning incident in the flight, Striker himself has to pilot the aircraft.

I don't know if it's my Gen-Z mind, but the gags felt completely unpredictable to me. It was completely random, which made it funnier than it should have. It also helps that the gags were delivered with a deadpan expression and a serious tone. Whether it be the pilot asking obscure questions to a child or a man getting stabbed but still managing to hit the moves, it was all perfectly done.

Almost all the actors give great performances in the film. But I want to rave about two performances, i.e. Julie Hagerty as Elaine Dickinson and Leslie Nielsen as Dr.Rumack. The flashback sequence showing how the couple met was completely carried by Julie Hagerty with her over-the-top expressions. The role of Leslie Nielson as Dr. Rumack could have appeared as an actor being bored or uninterested if done in a wrong manner, but Leslie Nielson manages to make it hilariously stoic.

In the end, I would like to say this has become one of the funniest comedies of all time. Even after 43 years, it is still funny to the core.

The kid's insult to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in "Airplane!" is word for word what LeBron James is criticized for all the time.

The scene.

Joey : Wait a minute. I know you. You're Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. You play basketball for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Roger Murdock : I'm sorry, son, but you must have me confused with someone else. My name is Roger Murdock. I'm the co-pilot.

Joey : You are Kareem! I've seen you play. My dad's got season tickets.

Roger Murdock : I think you should go back to your seat now, Joey. Right, Clarence?

Captain Oveur : Nahhhhhh, he's not bothering anyone. Let him stay here.

Roger Murdock : But just remember, my name is...

[showing his nametag]

Roger Murdock : ROGER MURDOCK. I'm an airline pilot.

Joey : I think you're the greatest, but my dad says you don't work hard enough on defense.

[Kareem gets angry]

Joey : And he says that lots of times, you don't even run down court. And that you don't really try... except during the playoffs.

Roger Murdock : [breaking character] The hell I don't! LISTEN, KID! I've been hearing that crap ever since I was at UCLA. I'm out there busting my buns every night! Tell your old man to drag Walton and Lanier up and down the court for 48 minutes!

TIL Kareem Abdul-Jabbar didn't want to appear in the movie Airplane and only agreed to do so because it would pay him enough to afford a $35,000 rug.

TIL Kareem Abdul-Jabbar asked for $5k more than the $30k he was offered to be in Airplane! just so he could buy an Oriental rug he had his eye on.

TIL the ZAZ trio (Zucker, Abrahams, Zucker), creators of movies like "Airplane!", "Top Secret" and "The Naked Gun", pulled a prank that cost them 60,000$ and took 4 years, just to have an announcer at a horse racetrack say "all pink on the inside"
