Trending news: 'A Wrinkle in Time' ditches the book's explicit Christian references, and the movie really suffers because of it.

Seeing many articles (on the left and right) that says the movie is doing poorly. Box office $39.3 million and 100 million cost per wikipedia.

Insider Culture article

Disney's big-budget adaptation of the best-selling novel "A Wrinkle in Time" falters in many of the same ways the book does— but there was one major change made in the movie from the novel. The film's version of events strips away explicit mention of God or religion, instead trimming down the central conflict to one between "evil" and "light."

Though the film adaptation has several critical flaws — namely pacing and an off-kilter wobble between too much exposition and then not enough — the removal of L'Engle's religious overtones leads to a key issue.

Vox article - Madeleine L’Engle’s Christianity was vital to A Wrinkle in time

This week, an adaptation of one of the most banned children’s books of all time, Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time, will hit movie theaters nationwide. The story follows Meg Murry, a moody but brilliant young girl who travels to another planet under the auspices of three mysterious supernatural beings to save both her long-lost physicist father and, later, her prodigy baby brother Charles Wallace.

Brietbart article - Nolte: Disney Bigots Strip ‘Wrinkle in Time’ of Christianity and It Bombs

The trailer for director Ana Duvernay’s A Wrinkle In Time looks awful — empty and bloated. According to Rotten Tomatoes, most mainstream reviewers of the Disney flick, those predisposed to give a black, female director like DuVernay every benefit of the doubt, found the movie to be a diet of empty calories. Thanks to alternative media, the reason for this might come from Disney’s decision to strip Wrinkle of its central theme — Christianity.

TheFederalist article.

The upcoming release of “A Wrinkle in Time” is generating some controversy and divisive reviews, especially after a recent interview with the screenwriter, Jennifer Lee. If you’re unfamiliar with Lee, she’s best known as the writer of “Frozen,” the children’s musical about running from your problems and hiding in ice castles. “A Wrinkle in Time” is the best known work of Madeleine L’Engle, and the book is one of the best loved and most popular children’s books of all time.

I never read the book, so I just picked up the audiobook that came out in 2012.

Thoughts? Seems like a good story. But does Good/Evil to Dark/Light really change the story? Does removing its Christain theme alter the story? Even seen a comment "They Purged Jesus".
