My favorite book as a preteen/teenager was A Wrinkle In Time.

So, after I found out about the movie, I read it to my children, so we could all watch the movie together. We did it as a bedtime story, a half a chapter a night and I only have them weekends, so it took a while. But we did it. Yesterday we finished the book. Today we watched the movie.

That thing was ATROCIOUS. We all hated it. It shared nothing but a few main plot points with the book. What was Disney thinking? Are my family and I the only ones who hated it?

Edit: WOW! I never thought this post would blow up. I don’t have the time in my life to respond to everyone, but, thank you for commiserating. I’m really glad that some of you liked the movie, nothing should be universally hated. Except maybe Hitler. And I don’t begrudge anyone for disliking the book. Taste is subjective. I plan on looking into everyone’s recommendations on family movie criticism, I think we’re going to do Harry Potter next.

The thing I love most about Reddit is that it brings so many strangers together to discuss topics they’re individually passionate about. Thank you all for the conversation, even if I ducked out early.

false

I know of it's enduring popularity, but I just finished Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time, and I found it to be kind of a mess.

Books aimed at kids frequently need to keep it simple, but rarely have I felt more talked down to.

I get it: one has glasses, one speaks in quotations, and one is ephemeral. Reinforced with every flipping line of dialogue. Tiresome.

So many themes and concepts undercooked. Nothing made sense. Meg has a miraculous epiphany and saves the day by saying "I love you" multiple times.

No connection between the battle against darkness and IT, the Man With Red Eyes, etc.

I haven't seen any of the movies, but I'm unlikely to, given the hurried mess the ending became.

As a reading update, I finished Madeleine L’Engle’s“A Wrinkle in Time”yesterday and have a TON of thoughts about it.

Initially going into it, I was a little worried. I feel like children’s classics tend to be a hit-or-miss scenario for me, so I expected this to be an interesting experience before I even started it. I’ll start with what I did like, and that’s about the first third of the novel. The characters I all found to be intriguing, but what I loved most was their camaraderie and the way they bounced their ideas and values off of each other. I feel like you see so many children’s lit books that follow only through the eyes of the main “outcast” group of kids and see only how they’re perceived by the world and by the other kids that interact with them. In this one, though, you see how this family of “different” kids all value each other and what they bring to the table. With the introduction of Calvin comes this opportunity to show how kids learn from one another, no matter where they come from or what their talents are. It was really quite charming, and I really wish it would’ve stayed that way.

It isn’t often that I say that the fantastical elements of a story take away from the charm, but I found that to be the case here. Once the three witches show up and people start jumping through time and space, I found myself really confused as to what was going on or what the point of all this imagery was. The world that L’Engle created was intriguing enough, but seemed to fall flat more often than not. Upon looking it up, someone had mentioned this idea of “faith versus logic” or “religion versus science” and that being the main conflict, and gave her kudos for attempting to discuss something this controversial in her novel. It kinda reminded me of CS Lewis in a way, and I think if you really like CS Lewis you’ll probably enjoy this novel (though honestly I preferred “The Magician’s Nephew” over this). Seeing the story through this lens, a lens I hadn’t considered before, made me see it in a slightly different way, and carried with it more positives and more negatives. It definitely paints this picture of faith being more reliable and conquering lord challenges than science and logic, which I do believe in certain circumstances, but the more I looked at it the more I realized that most of the “logical thinking” aspects of this novel are seen as negatives. The main villain is literally a brain 🥴 and even the protagonist’s math skills are viewed as a negative aspect to her personality by other characters. Her brother, Charles, was extremely intelligent for his age and this is also seen as a negative — something that results in him being captured and controlled by the villain. So, honestly I’d say it kind of rubs me the wrong way if this is what she was going for. But again, I’m not too sure. I felt like a lot of the bigger ideas just went over my head, and not a lot of it had any rhyme or reason to it, even for fantastical children’s book standards.

I probably won’t be continuing on with this series unfortunately, but I’ll recommend this book to people that enjoyed stuff like the Chronicles of Narnia. ⭐️⭐️

Awakening is the realization that far more can be found in direct experience than any concept, belief system, or narrative. The process of awakening is an ever-unfolding one, a deepening of that which is beyond all words and thoughts. We are in service of discovering that for ourselves.

A wrinkle in time ghost story.

So I was commenting on a post earlier about how My grandfather the scientist helped me read the Wrinkle in Time series when I was gifted the series at 6 years old. My aunt thought they were young kid books.

I was a avid reader very young. Was reading faster and better then my sister who was 18 months older then me. So my Aunt gave me two book series for my 6th birthday because they had cute pictures on the cover. First was Anne of Green gables and the other eas Wrinkle in Time. I know the year because of the inscription on the inside cover has the year. I would ask adults about big words. Until i remember my grandfather coming and sitting on my bed with me and reading the book together. He would explain the science and such. Every night before bed we would read for an hour. I remember it clearly.

The only thing is... My grandfather passed away in 1979, I was born in 1982. Ever since I was a baby, I was interacting with him and others. By the time i was a teenager I just accepted i was different and did my best to not say anything to others because people act weird.

When I moved in with my grandma in my 20's, I found a picture of my grandfather in an album and got very confused when asking how old I was when he passed away. Gram said he passed away before you were born. I looked at her like she was crazy. Because I remember him reading books to me as a kid. I remember him pushing me on swings, helping me ride my bike.

My husband jokes Im probably from a different universe and crossed over in my teens and thats why my memory of the past is different then everyone elses.

When books and movies reflect things you've experienced and you're al excited like see. Thats me. Thats what i see. The book the death and life of charlie st. cloud, the movie the 6th sense the tv show ghost whisperer.

Have so many questions.

Making the typically red-headed actress in Annie black or replacing the girl from A Wrinkle in Time with a person of color isn't progressive. It's lazy. Create quality content that allows for diversity, don't erase established culture. It's tokenism.

Diversity in Hollywood is a checklist to exploit people for money without giving the communities it throws a bone to anything substantial. If the hotshots in Tinseltown actually cared about creating content for ethnic minorities, they would stop replacing canonically white characters with people of color (or people of color with white people) and create new, well written roles specifically for non-white or minority actors.

This goes the same for characters who were people of color and then got cast as a white person. There's a way to go about diversity in Hollywood and I think this particular way comes off as indifferent box checking. I would like to see more shows like How to Get Away with Murder, Scandal, Blackish, Black Panther, Moonlight, Legion, Orange Is The New Black, That's So Raven, The Cleveland Show, the newest Harry Potter spinoff, etc.

I think it's way more refreshing when you stop trying to change established canon characters (whether they're white or Hawaiian or asian or black, etc) and elevate people of color through media/books/shows created to specifically reflect their culture and by people within their culture. Anything else does a disservice to the source material of other works (and what those fans expected from those works) and comes off as a cheap gimmick to show people how "progressive" you are. Said as a capital "L" Liberal.

Reverse whitewashing and whitewashing are both wrong.

Stop erasing culture, start creating culture.

Fundies and A wrinkle in time

Really niche question but I recently rediscovered this childhood favorite of mine, and it sparked some questions. The book has a lot of religious themes and allegories, I think a bible passage/hymn is even quoted at some point, and there's a lot of talk about hope and love and other Christian ideals. But it's also super progressive for its time, with the main, female character being a math and science whiz, and traditionally unfeminine in general. It also features a working, lab scientist mother, which was practically unthinkable in 1962, and is still somewhat rare today. There's also a lot on the dangers of conformity. So, what do you think fundies think, or would think of this throwback book?

Book I read in middle school. I think it was compared to a wrinkle in time. It had a sunset/landscape cover and the title was cursive-ish. I think the title was one word.
