TIL Edison was a movie pirate. Edison made hundreds of copies of "A Trip to the Moon" by Georges Méliès. This effectively bankrupted Méliès.

Searching for images of the Astronomer's Robe from "A Trip to the Moon" (1902)

Hello! I am desperately hunting for more reference images of this robe from the 1902 movie, "A Trip to the Moon." I emailed the museum through their website asking for more images or information but only got a response saying it is on display at the Méliès Museum. Since this museum is in France, I am unable to see the piece in person. The robe has spectacular designs on the front and back that you can't see in this image and since the footage of the movie is so old, it is very difficult to see details in the actual film.

I'm still scouring the internet on the off-chance that maybe someone who toured the museum filmed it but I was wondering if perhaps someone has the ability to- or knows someone who can- visit the museum and take pictures of it for me?! I am truly, very in love with this robe and I'd love to recreate it for myself. If anyone knows of a place where I could find/pay someone willing to do this for me, that would also be spectacular!

Georges Méliès' A Trip To The Moon and the Birth of Narrative Cinema

Video essay.

"A Trip To The Moon" (1902).

I love A Trip To The Moon. Just ten years after the invention of motion picture cameras, Georges Méliès saw potential in this new art-form for invention and magic. Originally an illusionist, Georges Méliès made an abundance of films exploring camera trickery that reflected his own illusions, but A Trip To The Moon is his most renowned work. A Trip To The Moon illustrates Georges Méliès' intuition brilliantly for clever filmmaking tricks (which are now well-established standard filmmaking techniques such as double-exposure, dissolves and stop-motion animation) and how the means of filmmaking can be used to deliver a narrative-driven spectacle.

Silent films at the time weren't narrative-driven, but were more commonly something more archival, capturing a special occasion or even the mundane and routine (Workers Leaving The Lumière Factory in Lyon [1895] comes to mind as an early example of documentary filmmaking). Méliès was quite forward-thinking to consider filmmaking as an option for delivering entertaining spectacles and fantastical stories.

A Trip To The Moon is a fusion of science-fiction and fantasy, focusing on the exploration of the moon, discovering the surreal sights that were believed to be found there. Although A Trip To The Moon feels a bit like a time-capsule in how it depicts the moon's surface, it's a testament to Méliès' inventiveness and imagination to conjure up such exciting sights that reflect magic and child-like wonderment. There's something very inspiring in A Trip To The Moon - the high standards that Méliès set in conjuring up imagined tales to portray on the cinema screen is an ambition that every filmmaker can relate to (there's something magical about A Trip To The Moon similarly how it feels magical to watch one's own film on the cinema screen).

Even though I'm 27, I do feel a child-like sentiment and excitement whenever I watch A Trip To The Moon. It just taps into that sweet-natured imagination and make-believe we've all had fun growing up with.

What do you think of A Trip To The Moon? I adore it, but would love to hear what others have to say <3
