Which ASOIAF could you see yourself dating or just generally find attractive?

I'd go for Arianne.

ASOIAF characters George would like to meet in real life [Spoilers Main]

Fan: Which character would you bring to life for one day?

George: If it's me hanging with them, maybe Dany. She's really cute. That might be fun... Actually, I could just go straight to Shae. I don't know... Tyrion, if I wanted to go drinking. If I was riding through a dangerous area and wanted protection, the Hound or Jaime.

- George R.R. Martin, Slovenia (2011)

Fan: If you could have dinner with 3 of your characters from the series, which characters would you choose and why?

George: Certainly Tyrion, because he would be witty and charming. I think he'd be a really good choice to start with. Maybe Maester Aemon, because he's wise and knows all these things about history. The third one, I don't know. I could say Arya, but she might misbehave and hit me with some food. Maybe Dany, because, you know, she's really hot. Especially if she wore that Qartheen gown.

- George R.R. Martin, TIFF In Conversation With George R.R. Martin (2012)

I guess George being a creep is nothing new lmao.

Btw, if anyone is interested, I have a tumblr blog where I collect interviews from George about the characters and the series as a whole called georgescitadel.

[Spoilers Published] My favorite ASOIAF character is Garlan Tyrell

As weird as that sounds, it's true. Garlan Tyrell just seems like such a good character to me even though he has like a few sentences of screentime in the books.

I was just reading ASOS and not only is he badass (training against 3 men at once) but he also seems to be one of the few genuinely good people, he is the only one who stood up for Tyrion when he was being harassed by Joffrey.

He's like Jaime (my second favorite character) but without the incest and child pushing.

And now I'm sad because I'm not sure he will make it to the end. I hope George likes him as much as I do and gives him a bigger role in the remaining books.

At the very least I am thankful that he is in the Reach so there is no way for him to die in some big dumb sept wildfire explosion.

(Spoilers Main) What ASOIAF character resonates with you?

Thing about George's books is how real his characters feel, almost as if you know somebody just like them in real life.

Me personally, I'm a kickboxer, bisexual, and from Spain! So the easy answer for me is Oberyn Martell.

What ASOIAF character would make the best addition to the Fellowship of the Ring? (Spoilers Main)

A few things to keep in mind:

They need to join at the Council of Elrond by the latest. Varys would be very interesting to see dealing with Wormtongue and Denethor, but he has to survive Moria first.

They shouldn't just double up on someone else's role. We already have a noble, secret king that's good at fighting and ranging.

They can split off and go with Frodo and Sam or stay with Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli. Tyrion potentially can get captured with Merry and Pippin. There's no red priests to bring back anyone who joins Gandalf on his kamikaze dive.

(Spoilers Extended) What's your favorite "Oh sh*t" moment from an ASOIAF character?

I'm thinking of moments when a character is unsuspecting of anything malevolent or thinks themself safe, but the tone drops and they realize they're in serious danger.

My personal favorite is in Jaime V in ASOS: "Urswyck leaned over and slapped him lazily across the face. The sheer casual insolence of it was worse than the blow itself. He does not fear me, Jaime realized, with a chill."

I like being spooked. More examples?

(Spoilers Main)Do ASOIAF characters really have free will?

I feel that some characters in ASOIAF like Dany and Cersei who have prophecies, can they really change these prophecies, in the story it seems that every character must inevitably fulfill their prophecies and there is no way to There is no change or cancellation of this prediction.

If this is true, then what about the personal choices that people like Dany and Cersei make It's useful.

It seems that basically whatever character they do, they end up having to passively fulfill their prophecy.

In fact I didn't see anywhere in the book that it was possible to change the prophecy, so in a deterministic world like ASOIAF where every person has their own prophecy, can you really judge the characters morally?

For example, if it was prophesied in Danny's fate that, for example, Danny is going to burn KL, and this prophecy is apparently unchangeable, can you really blame Danny for doing this heinous act, if the prophecies are unchangeable and the characters finally Each of them has a special destiny that they cannot change with their choices, then why should Danny be punished for setting fire to KL, it can be said that he has actually made his own destiny, which apparently no one can fight against this destiny. Slowly and inevitably, he is forced to fulfill his destiny and apparently there is no other way.

If in the world of ASOIAF, every human being is merely a slave to his destiny and passively forced to fulfill his destiny, then what is the moral judgment of these characters, whose actions are apparently related to a certain unchangeable destiny? He is forced to fulfill a destiny and apparently has no way to change it or be judged positively or negatively.

Finally, if everyone in the world of ASOIAF has a special fate and fate, and this special fate is apparently unchangeable, and also no choice in life can change a person's fate, then why do we judge characters as good or bad? We can't simply say that everyone is a slave to their fate and someone like Jon Snow is lucky that the fate of saving the world is written for him, and someone like Dany is unlucky and has to do a heinous thing according to the fate written for him. According to this logic, wouldn't all humans be neutral in the world of ASOIAF, because everyone fulfills their destiny anyway? Good or bad, what do you think?

Had characters like Ned, Bobby B, Stannis, Jon Arryn and Tyrion ect had lived during the dance replacing the characters like Cregan and Tyland who would they have sided with the Greens or Blacks. Rules

  1. They have to pick a side no being neutral

  2. Everyone’s choice is their own independent choice and not influenced by their family/friends.

  3. Dorne is included

(Spoilers All) /r/asoiaf's Top 50 ASOIAF Characters (Results Thread)

First, you may wonder as to why the change in title from 20 to 50. Well, my initial plan had been for a more modest top 20. Due to the overwhelming number of lists I received though, I've gotten enough to do a full top 50.

Lists were assembled in order, with 1st place receiving 12 points, 2nd place receiving 10, 3rd place 8, and then down from 7 to 1 for the rest of the places.

So, anyway, here goes. This is the top 50 ASOIAF characters, as chosen by the subreddit:

  1. Jaime Lannister-1396 points

  2. Tyrion Lannister-1226 points

  3. Jon Snow-1045 points

  4. Arya Stark-949 points

  5. Stannis Baratheon-780 points

  6. Davos Seaworth-720 points

  7. Theon Greyjoy-660 points

  8. Eddard Stark-507 points

  9. Sandor Clegane-434 points

  10. Sansa Stark-406 points

  11. Petyr Baelish-364 points

  12. Daenerys Targaryen-347 points

  13. Oberyn Martell-337 points

  14. Varys-331 points

  15. Euron Greyjoy-241 points

  16. Barristan Selmy-235 points

  17. Tormund Giantsbane-218 points

  18. Victarion Greyjoy-202 points

  19. Catelyn Stark-197 points

  20. Robb Stark-193 points

  21. Wyman Manderly-186 points

  22. Brienne of Tarth-186 points

  23. Tywin Lannister-184 points

  24. Cersei Lannister-169 points

  25. Eddison Tollett-167 points

  26. Asha Greyjoy-155 points

  27. Samwell Tarly-146 points

  28. Bran Stark-143 points

  29. Jorah Mormont-142 points

  30. Bronn-128 points

  31. Melisandre-93 points

  32. Robert Baratheon-92 points

  33. Doran Martell-82 points

  34. Olenna Tyrell-80 points

  35. Rhaegar Targaryen-70 points

  36. Quentyn Martell-64 points

  37. Roose Bolton-64 points

  38. Aegon Targaryen-63 points

  39. Ramsay Bolton-63 points

  40. Aemon Targaryen-62 points

  41. Khal Drogo-59 points

  42. Brynden Tully-59 points

  43. Jaqen H’Ghar-54 points

  44. Arianne Martell-51 points

  45. Mance Rayder-47 points

  46. Margaery Tyrell-45 points

  47. Duncan the Tall-41 points

  48. Joffrey Baratheon-32 points

  49. Jon Connington-31 points

  50. Strong Belwas-29 points

As you can see, it was a rather convincing win for Jaime Lannister in the end. Bran initially topped the list after one round of voting, but Jaime then topped the next four, and never really looked back. He was briefly overtaken by Jon at around the 80 points mark, with Tyrion also competing with them at that point, but he then regained his lead and never looked back. Tyrion occasionally challenged, but never really got within 40 points of him again.

The list for number 1 votes was also pretty interesting in itself.

  • Jamie Lannister-57

  • Jon Snow-28

  • Stannis Baratheon-25

  • Tyrion Lannister-22

  • Arya Stark-17

  • Theon Greyjoy-14

  • Davos Seaworth-10

  • Eddard Stark-6

  • Sansa Stark-6

  • Petyr Baelish-6

  • Daenerys Targaryen-5

  • Sandor Clegane-4

  • Wyman Manderly-4

  • Varys-3

  • Tormund Giantsbane-3

  • Catelyn Stark-3

  • Cersei Lannister-3

  • Bran Stark, Jorah Mormont, Quentyn Martell, Oberyn Martell, Tywin Lannister, Robert Baratheon, Rhaegar Targaryen and Asha Greyjoy all topped two lists each.

  • Eddison Tollett, Barristan Selmy, Euron Greyjoy, Robb Stark, Bronn, Victarion Greyjoy, Areo Hotah, Roose Bolton, Vargo Hoat, Greatjon Umber, Duncan the Tall, Kevan Lannister, Missandei, Joffrey Baratheon, the Night's King, and Benjen Stark all topped one list.

  • It was interesting to see how battles/positions changed throughout. After Jaime broke away, Tyrion, Jon and Arya largely battled for 2nd place. Eventually, Tyrion established himself in 2nd, and it was left to Arya and Jon, until Jon began to break away towards the end.

  • Characters like Jaime and Stannis seemed fairly polarising, in that they topped a superbly high number of lists compared to their positions. Yeah, Jaime did come 1st, but he got over double the number of 1st placed finishes as anyone else, yet you have to go down to Theon until he's got double the points of anyone.

  • Daenerys started incredibly poorly. If it hadn't been for a massive improvement, she'd have done well to make the top 30.

  • Brienne really started out of the traps, but quickly faded away.

  • Brienne is also the highest placed character who did not top any lists.

  • Davos was behind Theon for a long time, but eventually overtook him and had a massive surge. It looked like he might manage to overtake Stannis as well for a while, and he came within 20-30 points of him.

  • Sansa had a major surge towards the end. It appeared as if she'd be around Littlefinger and Daenerys, but a number of votes took her nearer Sandor than them.

  • Tywin Lannister started very slowly. As did Cersei, to an extent. Characters like Roose and Ramsay took a while to really get anything. Bronn was another slow starter who eventually picked up a bit.

  • Eddard Stark is the highest placed character who is definitively dead.

  • Stannis is the highest placed character who does not appear in the first book. Davos is the highest placed character who isn't even mentioned in it.

  • Euron is the highest placed character who doesn't appear till one of the most recent two books. If you limit it to the most recent one, then it's Wyman Manderly. Unless he did appear in an earlier on briefly and I've forgotten, in which case it would be Quentyn.

  • Rhaegar Targaryen in the highest placed character who is definitively dead at the start of the series.

  • Stannis is the highest placed King. If your definition of a king is limited to someone who has sat the Iron Throne, it's Robert, although the way down in 32nd.

  • Surprisingly, only 11 of the top 50 are definitively dead. 12 if you count the Hound.

  • 11 characters within the list are also females.

  • Arys Oakheart is the only POV character to not receive one vote.

  • Garlan Tyrell and Bloodraven both just missed out with 28 points, while Areo Hotah, Greatjon Umber and Shireen Baratheon all missed out on 27 points. Daario wasn't far behind, receiving 25. Or 266, if you believe a certain theory.

  • With 63 points was a bastard who aims to make a legitimate claim to a coveted position that he shouldn't have. Ramsay Bolton also received 63 points, too.

  • On a serious note, though, I split Aegon and Ramsay by finding out who had the highest finish at any point. Aegon managed one 2nd placed finish, while Ramsay never got better than 3rd. Thus, Aegon is ahead.

  • A lot of characters got some sort of nomination, but missed out. Including Loras Tyrell on 14 points, Rickon Stark with 10, Ygritte with 17, the Night's King with 18, Benjen with 13, Moqorro with 4, Hodor with 10, Howland Reed with 10, Jeor Mormont with 15, Kevan Lannister with 10, Podrick with 21, Tommen with 4, Wun Wun with 14, Shitmouth with 8, Ser Pounce with 15, Walder Frey with 2 (wtf), Craster with 1 (come on, man), Janos with 5, (ffs), and the Baratheon soldier who talks shit to the Lannisters after the Blackwater battle with 1 point (fuck yes, legend).

  • If the Night's King is no longer a human, then he is the highest placed non-human character, with his 18 points. If not, then it's Ser Pounce with 15, who just managed to beat Wun Wun.

  • Belwas and Drogo are the only characters on the list to (seemingly), not step foot in Westeros at any point.

  • The Arryns were comfortably the worst performing great house, which was probably to be expected. Outside of them, it's either the Tyrells or Tullys. The rest all gave a pretty respectable effort, with the Lannisters arguably coming off best due to taking the top two positions.

  • It's interesting to see how the novels will have impacted this. Jaime wouldn't have been anywhere near the top 5/10 until the third book, and Tyrion would've probably been number 1 until ADWD. Likewise, Daenerys would've probably made it into the top 10 comfortably until ADWD, while the latest book probably helped Stannis to establish a top 5 position.

  • I'm not sure yet as to what my next list will be. Top moments is definitely a possibility, although top houses could also be a possibility.
