Snoo thought he heard a subliminal message on the latest cassette he was playing. He eagerly unscrewed the screws on each corner of the tape. It didn't take long to put the reels on backwards. When he finished it wasn't much of a surprise it was telling him to share pictures of his cassette tapes, cassette players, analog equipment on Reddit. It also wanted him to promote tape labels, make tape compilations, and share the love of the format. The tape self destructs. Snoo eats the magnetic tape!

'The Dream Child' has an equal balance of fun and horror like Dream Warriors (with an even LARGER emphasis on the horror aspect) and has incredibly inventive kills. The movie has a pretty interesting premise. The characters are genuinely likable, and the story makes sense until it doesn't.
I understand qualms with the third act. The narrative falls apart, and the story stops making sense. But I don't see how this could ruin the experience of enjoying the film. The movie's been called flat, uninteresting, and boring, but there are influences of Raimi and Hammer horror. You can almost taste the Gothic atmosphere, and it feels like the definitive horror movie to me.
So why is this entry so hated?

Welcome back to our weekly slasher horror movie discussion. I know. Last week we continued the Nightmare on Elm Street Series with the A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988) discussion. This time we discuss our the fifth entry in the Nightmare on Elm Street Series… A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child (1989)
IMDB Rating: 5.1
Rotten Tomato Score: 33%
Director: Stephen Hopkins
Cast:
Robert Englund - Freddy Krueger
Lisa Wilcox - Alice Johnson
Beatrice Boepple - Amanda Krueger
Whit Hertford - Jacob Johnson
Kelly Jo Minter - Yvonne Miller
Danny Hassel - Dan Jordan
Erika Anderson - Greta Gibson
Synopsis: The pregnant Alice finds Freddy Krueger striking through the sleeping mind of her unborn child, hoping to be reborn into the real world.
Running time: 89 Minutes
Trivia (Provided by IMDB and Never Sleep Again Documentary):
-
Stephen Hopkins was given just four weeks to shoot and a further four weeks to edit the film. This meant that he had to shoot on one stage while the crew dressed the other, so they could shoot almost continually. After he made it, the studio was so impressed that he was given the task of directing Predator 2 (1990).
-
During the sequence in which the nun (Amanda) is raped by the criminally insane (roughly 6 minutes in), Robert Englund is wandering around in the background without his Freddy makeup - including one shot in which the camera lingers on him for a few seconds.
-
In the documentary, Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy (2010) (V), director Stephen Hopkins admitted he thought Mark's death scene was silly, but being a comic book nerd, he just had to put it in there.
-
All death sequences were cut down significantly in order to avoid an X-rating, including:
i) Dan's original motorcycle death was longer and contained much more gore.
ii) Greta's dinner scene was also edited. Originally, Freddy filleted the Greta-doll with the claw-glove causing it to spurt blood everywhere and then force-fed her its innards
iii) Mark's demise is also cut. As Freddy shreds the paper in the unrated release, his face is animated and shows him screaming along to his cries of pain until Freddy cuts his paper head off.
Bonus Question 1: What were your thoughts when they saw this for the first time?
Bonus Question 2: Do you believe Freddy had run its course by this point? Was the studio just releasing these movies to make a quick buck?

I'm a big fan of Freddy Krueger and the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. And every time I have a discussion about the franchise with a fellow horror fan, Dream Child is the movie that they don't like. I personally really enjoyed Dream Child, besides Dream Warriors and Wes Cravens New Nightmare, it's my favorite. I liked the plot and enjoyed the action that the movie had. Does anyone else feel the same way? If not why? And what's your favorite out of the franchise?
