A Christmas Story

TIL while filming the scene in 1983’s “A Christmas Story” where Ralphie is dressed as a sheriff, a prop man gave actor Peter Billingsley real Red Man chewing tobacco. Peter, who was 12, didn’t know the difference and ingested it. Production then had to be shut down until Billingsley recovered.

TIL in the ‘60s, filmmaker Bob Clark, driving en route to a date, heard writer Jean Shepherd's childhood stories on a radio broadcast. After circling a block for an hour till the broadcast ended, Clark was inspired to create a movie based on Shepherd’s tales. The outcome? 1983’s "A Christmas Story."

Peter Billingsley of A Christmas Story (1983) fame cameos as a worker elf in the 2003 Christmas comedy Elf. It would have been funnier if Billingsley played a bitter store elf instead but this is a fun nod nonetheless.

[a christmas story] the old man got ralphie the red ryder BB gun to spite his wife.

ralphie's mother is a bit of a worrier. not only does she overdress randy for the weather but she's the first person to tell ralphie that he'll shoot his eye out. as such, it's pretty clear where she stands on ralphie getting a BB gun.

then, there's the shattering of the leg lamp. the old man is pretty pissed off about his wife shattering his major award. although it's left ambiguous as to whether or not she did it on purpose, she then goes out of her way to insult it, which probably made a bad situation even worse. we never see the two of them reconcile over this fact and, as far as we know, the old man is still pissed off about it.

as such, maybe he got ralphie a red ryder BB gun as a way to flip his wife the proverbial bird. it's petty to be sure but that's what she gets for using up all the glue on purpose.
