One of the biggest themes of Ted Lasso is keeping your feelings to yourself. I'm going to write a separate post for that. But on the same theme, it's so heartbreaking to watch the opening scene of "Inverting the Pyramid of Success" (S2 E12) when the pundits are discussing Ted's mental health.

The episode aired in October 2021, and was filmed sometime in the first half of 2021. Chris Kamara only "came out" about his brain condition, apraxia of speech (AOS), in March 2022.

Jeff: The headline this morning is the news that Ted Lasso left in the middle of the Tottenham match this season not due to stomach problems, but because of a panic attack.

George: Lasso's clearly not fit to coach.

Here you see Kamara sighing in disappointment. Yes, he is acting, but imagine how he feels on the inside, struggling with mental health trying to keep his secret in.

Jeff: Come on now, George. Be compassionate.

George: Oh... Come on. Come on, Jeff. Come on. Would... Would, uh, Bill Shankly have a panic attack, eh? Would Brian Clough? Would Alex Ferguson have a panic attack?

Chris: Aw, be fair.

George: No, of course he wouldn't. Look, if... if your ship's being attacked, right? And you run to the bridge, you want to find a captain whose brain works, not some big girl's blouse.

They don't paint George Cartrick in the best light, he is clearly the one being a twat. But people like George Cartick do exist, and I'm sure that Chris Kamara personally knows and works with so many people with views similar to George. This show is highlighting the problem for people like Chris who is struggling with a brain condition, and with his mental health for trying to keep his feelings hidden. But did anyone involved with Ted Lasso even know about it at the time?

Especially after "Sunflowers" (S3 E6) which deals with Colin coming out to Trent, this just seems very relevant now. Chris was hiding something, not about his sexuality, but about his brain condition.

An excerpt from an article in the Daily Mail,

He first became aware of symptoms at the start of lockdown in March 2020 but initially ignored them.

Chris admitted he 'stupidly' hid his fears from his wife Anne and two sons Ben 35, and Jack, 34.

Rather than trying to speak normally, he would keep conversations with his family short and never start them.

But his wife of 40 years grew concerned after seeing his performance on the One Show in December 2020 and insisted he went to a doctor.

He previously told Sportsmail: 'I was in total denial. I did not want to accept it, but I'm no fool.ย?

'Twitter, family, colleagues, when they're all saying, "Are you all right? What's the matter with you?" Eventually, you think, "I'm going to have to face this".

'I didn't want to. I thought I could hide it. Now, people tell me they knew there was something wrong, and I thought I was masking it.

'It was my therapist who said to me, the day I accept my condition is the day I will start healing. It took me a good 20 months to do that.'ย?

His GP referred him for a brain scan after he said he was suffering 'brain fog' โ€” which he feared may be down to years of heading leather balls as a player.

Theย?Middlesbrough-born presenter quit Sky due to the demands of live broadcasting but has continued working for ITV on a number of pre-recorded television shows.

Chris fought to overcome his speech issues and returned to screens to co-host The Games and Ninja Warrior UK earlier this year.ย?

Fans originally became concerned for the pundit when they noticed he was slurring some of his words when reporting live from matches.

Some took to social media, claiming he was 'drunk'ย?ย?

He eventually revealed that he had been dealing with the issue for two years in March.

He admitted to finding it difficult to watch himself on TV and is wondering whether or not he should continue.

That just says a whole lot. For perspective and familiarity, let's compare AOS to a more common brain condition like Alzheimer's, with rates increasing fairly rapidly, I imagine more and more people are going through the same thing as Chris, knowing they have a problem and having to face "coming out" to their family, friends, and co-workers. It must be so hard to face that music and tell people you're struggling. So much respect for the people that do make that decision, and my thoughts go out to those who are currently struggling with it. I really fear the day it may happen to me. The best thing to do is recognise it early and seek help.

There's also an hour long podcast, The Diary of a CEO with Steven Bartlett which talks in detail about Chris' illness and coming out about it.
