Why is Vietnam internet culture so toxic?

Why is Vietnam internet culture so toxic?

Case in hand. One person posted on FB about the bad air quality and a bunch of angry locals told them to "fugg off back to their country" etc. You basically can't say anything thats even slightly less enthusiastic than songs of praise of the perfect Viet utopia you are blessed to live in. Any slight negative comment or even just one that isn't 100% positive about very valid issues will be met with a barrage of "go home/you know where the airport is/or something to the same tune. Even doxxing campaigns and threats of "I will make you lose your job" for simply speaking the truth.

And it seems the expats are just as bad as the locals. I'm in a group called Expats in Saigon and it's like kindergarten for adults who never grew up. Trolling, dogpiling, laughing at other's misfortune are all commonplace. Even people trying to warm others of scams or dangers are met with the same vitriol. Hanoi massive is just as bad. Total human petri dish

And don't give me that BS about "it happens everywhere". I've lived in 7 countries and have never seen anything to the same level elsewhere.

I personally thought it was fucking hilarious. And then I realized I fell into that category.

Redditors from non-English speaking countries: what is internet culture like in your first language?

Do memes exist? If so, are there deferent ones, or are the same memes just translated? Does trolling exist? Has any English-language internet culture originated in other languages?

I think it's easy to forget that the internet is an international and multi-lingual phenomenon, especially with the privilege of being an English speaker. I'm really curious as to whether the same patterns exist in other languages.

Hello Reddit!

We are a team of very serious and 100% professional researchers at Know Your Meme, an online database that explains and catalogues all facets of internet cultures, including notable memes, events, people, websites and subcultures. Since launch in 2008, we’ve chronicled the origins, history and evolution of more than 13,000 memes from all corners of the world, which would've been impossible without the help of our amazing community.

TLDR we've been tracking down and researching internet memes all day, every day for a decade. Ask us anything!

We are:

  • Brad Kim, Janitor-in-Chief

  • Don Caldwell, Managing Editor

  • Adam Downer, Associate Editor

  • Matt Schimkowitz, Associate Editor

  • Briana Milman, Associate Editor

EDIT: To celebrate our 10th anniversary and 20 years of meme culture, we are paying a special tribute to the top 10 most influential memes from the last two decades with a weekend-long timeline exhibition at the Museum of Moving Image (MOMI) on September 14-16. Wanna help us pick the final 10 memes that will be inducted into the Hall of Memes? Head over to kym.party to make your choices count!

EDIT 2: Wow, we expectn't so many questions (and so many that are on-point). We're signing off for now, but we'll be around, Reddit (u/knowyourmeme)! Thank you all for making our day :)

Hello Reddit! I'm Don Caldwell, the Editor-in-Chief of Know Your Meme -- the world's largest internet culture encyclopedia -- where I've spent most of my days chronicling the origins, history and evolution of memes from all corners of the internet.

I recently talked to MEL Magazine (u/wearemel) about r/Place and what it takes to make a great meme, you can follow Know Your Meme on Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Snapchat and /r/KnowYourMeme here on Reddit. You can also follow me on Twitter here. Would you be interested in a Chinese memes & internet culture website? *UPDATE*

Hello, this post is an update related to this post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/ChineseLanguage/comments/w9q15z/would_you_be_interested_in_a_chinese_memes/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

I have had this website as a personal interest for a few years but last week's post showed me there is enough interest that would justify me putting effort into improving it.

link: www.sinomemes.com

Many of the memes you see are contributed by non native english speakers, meaning the writing is not the best. I edit many of the post and the structure of the memes in the "Top Memes" tab are the template I'd like to follow.

This is very much a work in progress but I am happy with the design and function. All feedback is welcomed. If you have any specific questions related to the site or Chinese memes in general AMA.

A note on Elisa, and internet culture more generally.

By now, everyone has seen what happened with Elisa and the guy she was with. People have shared who they think is more at fault, but I'll just say that it seems like a bad situation with two people that, unfortunately, turned violent - and at least one member of that party is now paying the consequences.

I like to think that most people in this silly corner of the Internet agree that violence is not an answer to anything that happens online. We're not the Dabbler celebrating an assault with a weapon on an NYC street.

But I just wanted to take this opportunity to remind everyone that none of this online nonsense is real. We're goofing on John and his ilk. That's it. What happened with Elisa is an extreme example, but none of this should be bleeding into reality and people's lives. Nobody should be reviewing bombing a small business. Nobody should be calling John's mother. Nobody should be sending food or random shit to John. Nobody should be doxxing anyone. Nobody should be engaging in frivolous legal action.

Let's keep this shit funny, light, and - most importantly - on the goddamn Internet. Too many people (like Elisa) are getting lost in this nonsense and forget that their are real life consequences at stake.
