I mostly speaking this into existence. He has new set of diaries out and I’ve seen him do some media, including a podcast or two. I know the boys record months in advance sometimes, so potentially they may have already had Mr Palin guest for next season. Fingers crossed.

Which contemporary travelogues are the closest to Michael Palin's?

I used to enjoy watching Michael Palin's travelogues. He had an unassuming and unpretentious way of presenting, without unnecessary drama and fake hyperbole.

I've since tried:

  • Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations and Parts Unknown - it was alright, but didn't click as well as Palin and felt much more chaotic.

  • James May's Our Man in Japan / Our Man in Italy - it was watchable, but really only carried by May's personality.

  • An Idiot Abroad - I liked the UK Office but this is too much cringe for me for a travel show.

  • The Long Way Round / The Long Way Down with Ewan McGregor & Charley Boorman - didn't really click and I don't care about motorcycling enough.

What would you suggest?

Monty Phyton's Michael Palin is a true dad.

Welcome! This is a friendly place for those cringe-worthy and (maybe) funny attempts at humour that we call dad jokes. Often (but not always) a verbal or visual pun, if it elicited a snort or face palm then our community is ready to groan along with you. To be clear, dad status is not a requirement. We're all different and excellent. Some people are born with lame jokes in their heart and so here, everyone is a dad. Some dads are wholesome, some are not. It's about how the joke is delivered.

Graham Chapman, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, John Cleese, and Michael Palin early in the run of Monty Python. Circa 1969. Notwithstanding his smile, Cleese is generally reckoned the grumpiest member of the group.
