Maddie Wachowski is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog film series and it’s spinoffs produced by Paramount Pictures. She is a human and the most respected veterinarian in Green Hills, who along with her husband, adopts Sonic. First appearing in the film Sonic the Hedgehog, Maddie lived in the city of Green Hills, Montana, where she lives with her husband, Tom. At some point, Maddie had attended veterinary school, which she was only able to pull off thanks to Tom taking up two additional jobs to pay for her rent and tuition. Eventually becoming a doctor, Maddie would go on to become Green Hills’ most respected veterinarian while maintaining a healthy, happy relationship with Tom. Tom, the sheriff of Green Hills, grew bored and dissatisfied with the mundane daily duties in the town, which he believed did not help anyone or make a difference in anyone’s life. Wanting more serious police work that would allow him to prove himself, he put in an application for a position in the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) and Maddie supported him, since Tom had supported her in her career.

Maddie then flew ahead to San Francisco with their dog, Ozzy, to check out places to live in, staying with her sister, Rachel (who strongly dislikes Tom and encourages Maddie to divorce him), and niece, Jojo. Not long after, Maddie learned from the news that Tom was wanted by the government for domestic terrorism. Maddie tried to call him, but was unable to reach him. When Tom finally arrived at Rachel's house, Rachel refused to let him in. Coming to Tom's aid for an explanation, Maddie began arguing with Rachel until Ozzy revealed that Tom was carrying an unconscious and alien anthropomorphic hedgehog named Sonic. After Rachel was tied up, Maddie tried to take a look at Sonic to assess his injuries. Eventually awakening Sonic with some smelling salts, who greeted her as "Pretzel Lady", Maddie left the room for a minute to talk to Tom in private and getting an explanation.

After having heard that Tom was helping Sonic get off Earth by locating his lost Rings on top of the Transamerica Pyramid, Maddie ultimately accepted Tom's decision to aid Sonic and decided to help him and Sonic out. Taking Rachel's car, Maddie, Sonic and Tom drove to the Transamerica Pyramid, where Sonic’s Rings were, only to be attacked by the evil scientist, Dr. Robotnik, in his Eggpod. Sonic would use a Ring to send Tom and Maddie back to Green Hills for their safety while Robotnik chased him around the world until they also went to Green Hills. As Sonic proceeded to beat Robotnik's Eggpod into submission, Tom opened a Ring portal to the Mushroom Planet, which Sonic sent Robotnik flying into. With Tom having fulfilled his dream to make a difference in someone’s life by saving Sonic’s life, he and Maddie decided to stay in Green Hills and they adopted Sonic.

Incredibly warm and loving, as well as really smart, Maddie is shown to be exceptionally supportive of both her friends and loved ones, as well as their dreams. As an example, she made Tom a cake to congratulate him in case he got the job he wanted in San Francisco and another cake in case he did not get it. Whenever she senses that someone close to her has a problem, she is willing to drop everything to work towards making both those close to her and herself happy together. As such, she is willing to sacrifice as much as those around her are willing to sacrifice for her sake. She also works well under-pressure and shows both emotional and intellectual maturity, refusing to engage in her sister’s rants about divorcing Tom. She can also take matters into her own hands and does not give up when things get tough. As a veterinarian, Maddie cares deeply about animals and animal-like creatures, being very sympathetic towards both wild animals and domestic animals, and working hard to make sure they are healthy. She also enjoys doing yoga, which has led Sonic to nickname her “Pretzel Lady”.

Aside from her role in the movies, Maddie has also appeared Sonic the Hedgehog 2: The Official Movie Pre-Quill. She has also appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog: The Adventures of Sonic & Donut Lord, a mini-comic which is based on the first movie, and she will appear in the upcoming series, Knuckles.
